His voice is low as he steps forward, eyelids drawn in a dark glower. There was an amusement, a haughtiness even, that flickered in his glare. Was she to mock him in such a position? Bellatrix, who despite her fervor and her hatred for his absent brother had made quick work of likening herself to him with each passing day.
“Curious that you cannot speak his name and yet it is Sirius who has shown more concern for your own sister than you have since the attack.”
Regulus could not find it within his strength to forgive his brother’s betrayal, but his anger at that particular situation was bleak in comparison to his judgement of his cousin. It was not Bella whose face had been singed from that tapestry; she was still of Black blood and he would be damned if she did not act of it. Were they not already in hot water in Cygnus’s eyes for their lack of knowledge of their family’s happenings? Was Bellatrix to be exempt from such responsibility, from such guilt?
“I have heard more of his outrage, questions of your loyalty, than I have seen of your face. Is that truly the image your wish for yourself, Bella?
Is that an image you would wish upon our family at such a crucial time? What of your obligations to your blood - to the sister who lies motionless regardless of whatever pride you cannot swallow?”

“No. I’ve actually decided to come for a bit of air, myself. So do me a favor, and share that with me, will you?”
Walking towards him, the girl extends her open hand, waiting for the pack of cigarettes she knew to be hidden in his pocket There was moisture in the air; clouds clogging the sun from the sky with echoes of thunder in the horizon - a picture perfect image of how the castle felt inside. Stale. Suffocating. Smothering.
A free hand moves to her neck, untying the knot around her collar to ease the silver and emerald cloth as she steps closer to the opened window. In the shadows of the night, there was no need to put the perfectly polished doll act as she’d done lately; it was the biggest challenge to pretend to be a lady of cold stone, and the biggest lie to pretend she had no worries in her head.
“Slughorn can go to hell for all that I care, and only return when he has names instead of pitiful excuses. So can all those in the common room. I’m tired of hearing condolences - as if they cared - when I know at least one of them must have an idea of what happened. Have you heard anything yet? ”
A low chuckle rumbled in his chest, his hand patting the pocket closest to his heart and fishing for the battered package. Regulus slipped a second into his eager palm before tossing the box off to the fairer featured brunette. Who could blame the snake for his chain smoking, given the circumstances? He would rather his fingers itch for nicotine and smog than a fellow serpent’s blood; it could not be their place, not yet. There were still far too many missing pieces.
“All you had to do was ask, love. I wouldn’t dream of being stingy at a time like this. I dare say it’s more therapeutic than this fresh air they speak so highly of.”
Regulus couldn’t think of being free from the castle walls, couldn’t hope to release himself from the slow, drowning sensation that accompanied it. If there was one thing Cygnus had made plenty clear, it was that the seeker had greater things to worry about. He would always have greater things to worry about, and those should always encompass the well-being of the family. Fresh air would do little to bring the identity of Narcissa’s attacker to light.
“I’m afraid I’ve only heard much of the same. I’ve yet to hear anything more than empty condolences - mere societal obligations. Already the matter has been allowed to be brushed under the rug with formalities.
It’s revolting.”

Regulus closed the heavy dungeon door, cool beneath his rough palms. A pair of slender, ivory legs dangled near the fireplace, drawing his attention to the center of the common room with a smirk tugging at his full lips. He snaked his arms around the back of the chair, fingers sinking deftly into tense shoulders.
“It’s late, even for you...”
Plucking a cigarette from her fingertips smugly, he took a long pull before allowing the object of their shared habit dangle in her hand once more. He recognized the papers - a present he had gifted for the holidays. The seeker’s hand fell back to her shoulder, nudging the blonde playfully before he moved to take the seat beside her.
“One might even think you waited up for me,” a wink. “You know how Slughorn loves to chat.”

An open door sits at the end of the corridor, BECKONING her closer. There’s chatter and bustle within the bright room, yet everything feels still. It’s the closest she’s come, the most she’s dared to show her face. A few steps fill the space between the eldest Black sister and the Hospital Wing. Time may as well have stopped; students step wide around her. She can hear their mindless chatter, hushed WHISPERS as they brush past. Bellatrix knows–– even if Narcissa isn’t awake–– she should be in there. She should be at her sister’s bedside. All she has to do is swallow her p r i d e, stomach all the GUILT.
She staggers. She turns to leave. She CAN’T do it.
A whisper brings him to his feet, curious gazes directing his attention towards an exit rarely used by the present Black cousins. The raven hair retreating from the corridor had been all too absent as of late, but as with his shaggier haired elder brother, Regulus found it difficult to mistake the presence of one whose return he had long awaited. Anger brings forth an ache in his temples as he leaves the blonde serpent’s side.
“Leaving us already, Bella ?”
The seeker closes the distance between himself and the empty doorway, his jaw a hard line. Did family mean so little to the eldest sister of the seemingly lifeless witch, confined to a hospital bed while Bellatrix roams freely? Even Cygnus had come to question her absence.
“I’m sure your sister would be disappointed to learn you couldn’t find it in you to settle your differences with the hospital wing.”

“I take it you have been properly threatened to make an appearance outside of the wing?”
A thick curl of smoke trailed from the seeker’s mouth as he canted his head away from the approaching brunette. The boy’s torso hung lazily against the stone wall, emerald tie loosened and raven locks hanging freely across his tawny chest. Regulus was grateful his mother had yet to set foot in the castle; his disheveled appearance would likely send her into a proper fit - if his unwelcome habit did not do so first.
Regulus stubbed the remnants of his cigarette into the cobbled wall behind him, calloused fingers flicking the gnarled paper away haphazardly. Perhaps it would do Filch some good to do some actual work around the castle instead of poking his nose into other people’s business and sobbing about the resident poltergeist.
“Slughorn has already voiced his concerns about my absence from practice. Amazing how greatly he cares for his most stellar students when it is most advantageous. You’d think it was his sister lying in the Hospital Wing.”
❝My conscience is clear.❞
❝I wish more than anything that I could tell you that I’m certain of this.❞
❝Surely you must understand…with my own family at stake, I cannot believe you any more innocent than the next.❞
Regulus let out a deep breath, his fingers itching tobe holding a cigar - anything to calm his nerves. The last thing he wanted to do was feed into the rumorsbeing circulated by the uninformed masses, but therewas little he could do with so few facts to work with.
❝It’s clear to me that this could only have been done by one of our own, and I can only hope it to be an amateur mistake. A damn foolish one, at that.
Until that’s brought to light, though… no one is innocent.❞
❝Promise you won’t let anything happen to her.❞
Regulus lifted his head from where it rest in his hands, finally breaking his gaze from the white tangle of linen at the foot of the bed. His arms had long since lost awareness of their mobility; he could feel the joints in his elbows creak as he removed them from his knees.
It couldn’t have been long since he had last seen the middle Black sister, but for this he would not chastise her as others had before. Regulus, perhaps more than anyone else, understood her inability to leave her sister’s side. Had they left for even a second and she were to wake….
With the pristine walls crumbling around them, there were few left he trusted to take their place.
❝I will do…whatever it takes to assure that nothing like that happens again, Andromeda.❞
Now, more than ever, the serpent felt how greatly the safety of his family weighed on his shoulders. It was no longer merely a matter of comfort or security; a Black life could have been lost on account of another’s foolishness. Nothing was sacred, and he had to be prepared.
When he looked finally to the brunette, his eyes reflected time as they had not just days ago - as if he had not slept, as if this tragedy had taken a certain vulnerability from his sixteen years. Regulus knew now what his mother had not taught him to be true. No one was safe.
He was not so blind as to believe someone would target Narcissa purposely. Regardless of what reckless hand had made such a mistake, Regulus knew with great certainty it would be the last. Their folly proved what lengths he must travel to assure his family’s prosperity was not threatened, to become a man capable of keeping such heavy promises.
❝This will not be forgotten, I won’t allow it. I promise you, I will take care of us. ❞
“If it’ll get me another one of these foot rubs from you, I’ll come and join the lot of you every night. Hell, I’ll even dress to match.”
A satisfied sounding groan sounded in the back of her throat as the pads of his fingers pressed into her feet. Dropping the hand that held the cigar to where it almost met the floor, Alecto dropped her head back slightly, eyes closing as she took in the smell of the smoke lingering around them and the feel of his hands. The level of comfort she felt with Regulus was practically unmatched with any other friend, and while the girl was certain it had sparked a number of rumors, it would never stop her from enjoying his company.
She took a deep breath, her chest rising as she arched her back a bit and relaxed a bit further. Lifting her head, she cracked her eyes open and held the cigar out to boy opposite her. “Why don’t we do this more often? You catering to me, I mean. I quite like this. And who knows what it’ll get you in return?”
“Despite popular belief, I can be very generous given the opportunity. All you have to do is ask, although since you are offering to match dress code...”
The seeker gave a light smirk, the smugness in his eyes deepening as the blonde became pliant in his hands - praising his work with the most sinful of sounds. Oh, how he would have loved to see the blatant, confused looks so often given by the typical common room riff-raff. If only he had joined her sooner... While he may not have always agreed with the petite blonde’s violent ideologies, there was a certain pride that came in eliciting such sounds from the heavily pined after young witch, even if it was under relatively platonic circumstances. After all, Regulus was never quite content unless he was a step above the rest; with women it was no different.
Pausing at his work, the Slytherin swiped the cigar from Alecto’s extended digits - allowing himself the briefest of breaks as he inhaled the smoke deep within his lungs. Amicable as they may be, Regulus was only human after all, and one could only take so much before something less innocent arose in the pit of his stomach. He had never been shy in his appreciation of her beauty to begin with.
Regulus allowed his freed hand to slide along one of her calves lazily. “That, I couldn’t tell you, but I dare say we ought to continue. How else would I ever learn what kind of favors your appreciation might earn me?”
