I feel like Pearson is quite often forgotten when it comes to the gang as a family dynamic, which makes me quite sad because he really does put a lot of effort into presenting himself as an honorable parental figure to at least some of the younger girls.

The camp interaction where this is the most obvious is his interaction with Mary-Beth prior to them finding out what happened to Kieran, you might better know this interaction from the line "you think a shark came and ate Kieran?"

What to me makes me conclude that Pearson is trying to befriend and guide Mary-Beth is generally two different things. The first one being the way he greets her after she asks him if he has seen Kieran, he replies with "no my child, I have not seen anyone," and even more interesting is the fact that Mary-Beth does not seem to find this strange or out of character, suggesting that this might not be something unusual for him to do.

The interaction was pretty much at its end there as Mary-Beth turns around to leave, however Pearson calls her back to tell his shark story from the sea, Mary-Beth becomes confused and Pearson has to directly admit that his story didn't have any actual relevance to the prior subject but was rather just him making convosation. It doesn't take too much thinking to realise that Pearson is quite fond of Mary-Beth and due to him earlier calling her "my child" it likely is more in the parental way rather than a romantic one.

Whether Pearson has been able to insert himself as a fatherly figure to Mary-Beth is debatable as generally the whole interaction is a tad bit awkward and forced despite the fact that him calling her "my child" is likely common. We can also see Pearson shaking his head after Mary-Beth leaves, likely due to the failure of the convosation.

I'll be honest, I like John, but he is a massive douche in the early chapters of RDR2. Like he's very neglectful to his son, he tries forcing Karen onto his lap, and he even wanted to kill Abigail at one point. He's not Dutch or Micah levels of awful, but he's up there.

Thankfully he got better, but man, Abigail or Arthur or Hosea or someone should've knocked some sense into him earlier.

been thinking more about van der linde!kieran and how he would be comically loved by several gang members if he had only joined earlier. pearson loudly says that at least SOMEBODY'S making sure they don't all STARVE when he comes back to camp with a net straining with fresh wriggling fish (arthur literally JUST brought meat to camp but he had an attitude about it while handing it over). sean hears "can't you be more like kieran" from grimshaw and hosea a few times a week at minimum and will constantly rib him for it. and of course EVERYONE is bugging him about their horses every time one of them so much as has a stuffy nose. he's the only one besides dutch who's allowed to touch the count, literally anyone else gets bitten.

I've been thinking: what if johns neglect of Jack didn't come from him thinking Jack wasn't his? But rather out of a fear of becoming like his own father.

John has spoken about his father a bit in 1. All we know is that he was a Scottish immigrant born on the boat to the US, who would raise John alone after his mother died in childbirth, eventually being stabbed to death when John was 8.

While John speaks about his dad with some fondness, implying that he wasn't abusive like Lyle Morgan was, he was still an alcoholic and likely extremely neglectful of John.

It's honestly a miracle that John survived past infancy given how there wasn't baby formula in those days and John's dad likely neglected him, so maybe the girls in whatever saloon John's dad was at during a given night took care of him.

Marston seniors alcoholism, neglectfulness and violent death definitely had a negative impact on him, and his death caused John to end up on the streets before Dutch found him.

I think John was reminded of his own parents when he found out that Abigail was pregnant, given that his own mother was a prostitute. So, John, afraid he'd be neglectful and as bad of a dad as his father was, just ran away and didn't want anything to do with Jack out of fear that he'd mess up like his dad did. Part of it may have also been insecurity

Obviously this doesn't excuse anything, and in the end, had an extremely harmful effect on jacks upbringing.

years ago on twitter i saw someone said red dead redemption 1 may pale in comparison to its second installment, but there are bits like this in the first one that are just comedic gold and it was the reason why i decided if i ever play the game i'd play rdr1 before rdr2. great decision. here's the clip i cut from my own recording cus i can't find it anywhere.

While I really like Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2, I can't help but wonder what the planned sequel to revolver would have looked like.

It would've been so interesting to see red's son, to see his son be like Red, caught up in revenge (Red's son was supposed to be wronged by outlaws), searching for his father, as his father was the only one left in his family.
