Ramblings: Veth's Fanon Characterization and Widobrave

Why is Veth always reduced to the "Mom" of the group? Not even the "Mom-friend" just: the mom. Most people exclude her from shipping of any kind beside Yeza. You could argue that it is due to Veth being married with a child, but fandoms have shipped pairings with more obstacles to get through than a fantasy divorce. But, as much as it ignores her canon growing distance in her relationship with Yeza, it's not what actually makes me angry here.

What makes me angry is that Veth is so often reduced to being a mother to the group despite her not really mothering the group. Yes, Veth takes care of her friends and loves them, but does she really love them in a motherly way? Or does she love her friends while also happening to be a mother. If we examine all her relationships with the M9, the closest she comes to mothering is Caleb, and that is based on a throwaway comment she made in the beginning of the show. When Nott says (paraphrasing), 'In this relationship *I'm* the parent,' we have to look at the context: Fjord and Molly had previously made comments about Caleb brainwashing Nott and, in general, the pair was on the outside of the group. By insinuating Nott was a manipulated little girl they also implied that Caleb was using her and was a shady character. Nott pretty much pointed out that if anyone in the relationship was a protector, it was her, while also proving she wasn't a stupid little kid being used— Nott could fully fend for herself. Caleb needed HER, not the other way around (though, we do know she needed him).

Additionally, you could argue that Nott was compensating for her lost relationship with Luc. At this point in time, she had no idea if she would ever see him again, likely feeling guilty for being unable to go back to him and take care of him. Luc would grow up without a mother— not because she was dead, but because she was something, In Veth's mind, far worse: a terrifying monster. We know that Nott had feelings for Caleb when she met him, but she pushed them away because she felt loyal to her husband. She very well could have been calling her relationship with Caleb a parental one to *convince herself*. She felt a deep attachment and bond to him, but was obviously conflicted due to her marriage. Wouldn't it be easier for Nott to convince herself that this wizard was more of a son to her than deal with the realization that, maybe, she could be happy outside of her marriage?

Furthermore, Veth and Caleb's relationship has drastically changed since the beginning of the show. They both thought of themselves as the other's protector and guardian of sorts (Caleb implied several times he thought Nott was a young girl), but, as time has gone on, we see that the pair look at eachother as equals. They both have grown to lean on each other and work together. No longer is either more of a protector than the other. They respect eachother as adults and as close friends. Relationships are not stagnant, they are prone to growing and changing and there is no doubt that their relationship has advanced as the two have learned more about each other.

In conclusion, while you don't have to ship Widobrave, it is a disservice to Veth's character to act like her feelings are out of left field or out of character. Stop reducing her to just being a mother of the group, she is a friend and an equal.

I genuinely don’t understand how anyone can watch The Confession Scene in 85, The Kiss in 91, Sam’s answer to if Nott is still in love with Yeza on 91’s Talks, and the confession of romantic love in 97, and still be surprised over the description for Heart In A Cage in Veth’s playlist.

It comes to a point where it feels like willful ignorance. Even if you don’t care for a ship with Veth outside of Yeza, you can’t possibly be suprised about her feelings towards Caleb with all of this build up.
