and while we are at it I’m also not keen on the rift between Caleb and Nott at the end of the season as well. I’m more disappointed by it though.
Some have said it works well to set up the rift that occurs in 49, but I disagree. I think that “well, fuck him” moment hits so hard in 49 because we have never seen Nott that upset and betrayed by Caleb before. It’s a shock to the audience and especially Caleb because Nott is always Caleb’s #1 supporter, even if she doesn’t agree with him on things, she makes sure he knows she’s still with him.
When 49 comes along we see for the first time that there is someone out there that matters more to her than Caleb, and he may have inadvertently done something to harm that person, and she is furious with him, for the first time ever.
As stated earlier, I’m just kinda disappointed by this because I fear their conflict in 49 won’t be as jarring and impactful if we already see Nott get on his ass for something that barely even effects her.
Nott saying the buttons remind her of a boy she once knew. Hm. Hrm, even.
[spoilers]
Does anyone else worry they’re going to cut Nott’s crush on Caleb from the animated series? I know we’re only in season 1 and adapting material where her feelings were still leaning more maternal than anything, but if I were a writer and wasn’t a Nott stan, I could see the reason to cut it in order to simplify their dynamic. Especially since writers have made it clear they’re setting up shadowgast as early as possible.
That being said I also worry if they will cut Caleb and Beau’s crushes on Jester as well. Though I can see them including elements of it for comedy.

When Percy failed his stealth check and Scanlan kissed him
so, not to be insane about it on main again but a bard’s lament is one of my favorite episodes and i really think it’s gonna happen this season so i’m just gonna get into it again.
so, i like things that are emotional and messy and difficult because they can be incredibly human. and a bard’s lament is one of these things! however, i also think there’s, a lot of times, a sort of inherent misunderstanding about what is actually happening there. and to be fair, i think it’s totally natural to misunderstand on instinct and that’s kind of the point.
it’s easy to get caught up in what scanlan’s saying because sam delivers it all so well, but i think what gets missed a lot is why scanlan is actually saying it.
i think most people’s instinct is to say “oh it was vox machina’s fault for being bad friends, they reacted poorly” and “oh it was scanlan’s fault for only ever lying or joking when they questioned him” but the thing about situations like this is that both things can absolutely be true. no one won in a bard’s lament because no one ever wins in a situation like that.
scanlan was in a situation where he says most of what he says because he’s in an absolutely awful place mentally. everything has been building up and has lead to this exact moment and it was a perfect storm of across the board miscommunication and emotions and confusion. he says things that he knows will hurt the others because he’s angry and embarrassed and deeply depressed and the safe thing for him to do in that moment, in his head, is to push everyone away.
and yeah, vox machina react somewhat poorly to his outburst but at the same time why wouldn’t they! they were terrified they were going to lose their friend and now they also feel extraordinarily shitty and guilty and they’re faced with a reaction that none of them have the tools to handle. depression is an extraordinarily powerful and immensely illogical force sometimes, so yeah! scanlan said stuff about situations that he was interpreting in the WORST possible way and yeah the group didn’t know where to put that. so it’s not really about them not knowing his mother’s name. and it’s not even fully about the pudding or the prank. it’s about how it, to him, reiterates what he feels about himself. that he’s embarrassing and useless and no one really cares about him. BUT THAT’S WHAT MAKES IT SUCH AN INSANE PIECE OF RP!
because logically, of course they care about scanlan even if they aren’t perfect at showing it. there are MULTITUDES of examples of that! but scanlan doesn’t care about scanlan right then. and not much can get through that level of self loathing in that moment.
Vox Machina part 3
i feel like a scanlan fan account atp ,, i'm addicted to doodling him

oooh more scanlan !! who's surprised !? no one !? awesome🤞

So much happening in this clip.
Robbie hears Veth’s voice for the first time (gold)
Chetney tries to flirt. “Hello, good lookin’.” “Oh.” “How are you?” “I’m… good. What’s your name?” “Chetney Pock o’Pea, but you can just call me C-Papa 😏” “Hmhm 🙂 No I don’t think I will.”
Sam describes her fierce catwoman suit, to everyone’s excitement
Veth tells Braius she has an open relationship sometimes and Caleb makes an insight check. “Did that feel authentic to me or like bullshit?” “No!!!”
Fearne accidentally talks over Caleb and goes “I’m so sorry sir-”
Veth complains about Luc being brought along on a dangerous mission with the nein, they defend themselves and reassure her he was very capable and they were totally strict with him (lol. Lmao.)
it's so funny to me that caleb and veth really did just trade off the job of intensely pining for the other at like the halfway point of the campaign. like, imo, nott in the early days did not behave in any real romantic or even romance-adjacent ways toward him--I imagine it would be very hard to even think in that way when you hate what you look like so much, have such low self-esteem, and are actively lying about your entire past, including a secret husband. caleb, on the other hand, is kind of diving directly back into the sort of relationship he had with astrid and eadwulf. very close, very intimate, we-huddled-for-warmth-together-and-oops-it-led-to-something-else sort of thing. he is the one who expresses that he's fine with it if people think he and nott are romantically together when they're talking to keg. nott is the one who pushes back on that. he calls her his life partner. unknowingly, he compares his feelings for nott to nott's feelings for yeza. his behavior only really starts to change after he finds out about veth's husband because suddenly all of that other stuff is rendered inappropriate in retrospect. but even then he compliments her to yeza over dinner in the most awkward of ways, he admits to being jealous, he calls yeza "a lucky man" to have her, he stares at veth and yeza closed bedroom door for far too long, he creates an entire arcane tower with room for her family just so she'll stay with him. in general, his behavior is not, um, totally and completely platonic about it, you know?
like, veth's feelings for caleb are canonical and therefore indisputable in their existence, but caleb in the early days was not that dissimilar to how veth was acting near the end of the campaign. it really paints a picture of "right person, wrong time" in the way things just didn't line up for them. or, as veth would say: "in another world, maybe"
