The whole album speaks volumes. With every re-listen a different song resonates with where my headspace is at that moment. For this moment, it’s ‘Sugar’. To me, it tells the reality of life for most of us. Obongjayar narrates about the struggles most people go through. He also draws attention to the fact that regardless of this struggle, you have to continue to move forward. He’s not sugarcoating it. The first few lines of the song goes “Good God // We come from nothing, nothing’s promised // Break our bodies for this money // hit that belly everyday // Not too many options for my people so we pray”. He delivers blunt honesty right from the beginning and it’s a running theme throughout the entire song. This, however, does not make the song a depressive one. Quite the complete opposite and it’s absolutely beautiful to listen to.
