While libraries are rapidly evolving to become community centers, they have always been places where the public can freely access information. Genuinely, one of the measures that's stopped book banning the most when districts implement it, is having the would-be banners fill out a form that demonstrates if they've read the book or not. Like where they have the summarize the plot and characters and do a mini book report and give a review. It stops them in their tracks. This is why in my high school, every time someone wanted to ban a book it ended up going nowhere. There was one where a conservative student wanted to ban the manga "Legal Drug" for having a marijuana leaf on the cover, then got the form that required them to actually read and either balked, or read it and realized it was not pro-drug at all.
(The other one that reduces book bans even further is "requiring the would-be banner to be affiliated with this actual school in some way, either by being a student, faculty/staff or a parent of a child at the school" because the vast majority of bans are "activists" with no affiliation with the school who just travel around trying to do this in districts all over the U.S. IIRC a few years ago someone crunched the numbers and just 51 parents were responsible for all the book bans that year nationally. 51! In a country with 50 states, with over 300 million people total!)
if your local public library celebrates pride month, let them know you support that. if they've posted a picture of their display on social media, leave a like or a comment. if you see it in person, leave a comment card. if there's a program, even if you can't attend it, find some way to contact the library director to say you think it's great they're having something.
people protest pride in all kinds of ways. they don't want queer books where people can find them. community support where library leadership can see it makes all the difference. be as vocal as you can.
The situation is catastrophic now in Gaza after the heavy rain and winds this week. Did you know that families in Gaza are sheltered only by some pieces of nylon and that the cold is very severe? My family is suffering from severe cold.
There is no shelter to protect them from the bitter cold. Their help will save my family’s lives from starvation and may help them flee Gaza soon after the crossings are opened soon.
I know that most of you are desperate and bored of constantly asking us for help. But how many times do you see the world and governments that did not look at us with mercy?

Hello, I am Ahmed. I am 22 years old. I study medical equipment engineering at Al-Azhar University in Gaza, which was recently destroyed due to the difficult and terrible war that Gaza City is going through.
I had one year left to graduate, but the war destroyed everything. I lost my education, my father lost his job and his small shop.
I hope that you will help me and stand by my side in saving me and my family, starting over, completing my education, and building my life and future after it was destroyed.
It's with a heavy but hopeful heart that I watch Palestinian families fundraiser on here, slowly accumulating the precious little money to go around that they need to survive. However, not everyone is so lucky. A lot of Palestinians that have not had that kind of luck, that did not get early verification, that did not get massive platforms behind them from large bloggers, have approached me in my inbox, asking me kindly to do what I can for them.
It kills me that I have so little to give myself, but I've seen this platform collectively raise enough to change someone's life. I've made a list of Palestinian fundraisers that are extremely low on funds, in the hope that drawing attention to people who have not been lucky at all can help turn that luck around.

if you want to raise this money via GOFUNDME it has to be arranged by someone who is NOT living in Palestine because GFM does not release money to Palestine. GFM also verifies every detail so it has to be accurate so you need someone who is out of Palestine and also familiar with the bureaucracy.
once you raise the money one of your FIRST ORDER RELATIVES have to deposit this money IN CASH and IN PERSON at the Cairo offices of a company called hala. this person cannot be a Palestinian male under 40 because they are not allowed to be Egypt without a permit
once you pay the money you have to WAIT for your names to be published by Egyptian military at the Rafah crossing and the you have 24 hours to get out
it is a very long and convoluted process that is impossible for most Palestinians who do not have contacts in other counties. Please please donate to the GFMs you see floating around because they’ve been verified and this is only the first step in an arduous journey. Once in Cairo, Palestinians aren’t allowed to work so they need money for their support also.

Today, we find ourselves sheltering in a humble tent, stripped of our possessions and livelihoods. The loss of my job, my home, and the comforting presence of my loved ones weighs heavily on my heart. Nevertheless, I refuse to surrender to despair, clinging to the belief that brighter days lie ahead.

They are limited to one small meal a day and one shower a week. They are sleeping on the floors, but no one can sleep since there is bombing everywhere around them.
