Never Broken - Marathon Monday
Below is a blog we had posted a year ago describing our experience during the Patriots Day - Boston Marathon Bombing. I have just arrived home from the 2015 Patriots Day Red Sox game a bit wet but inspired by the runners and people who keep us safe...You can hear the studio version of “Never Broken” here: https://soundcloud.com/fromtherafters/never-broken-1
“2 years ago today I had just picked up Rob Damico, we stopped to grab a little Dunkin’s, and then continued south down 495 to meet up with our friend Sean Leblanc. For the last 10+ years Sean has been kind enough to bring us with his season tickets to the Patriots Day Red Sox game - 2nd row right next to the Pesky pole…We parked down at the Prudential Center, it works out great, catch the game, walk back to the car and see some marathon runners cross the finish line…
The Red Sox beat the Rays 3-2 in dramatic fashion with a walk off wall ball. Dirty Water blasting and there was a baseball euphoria only felt at Fenway Park. After a few post game drinks we headed back to the Pru, a young guy with ear buds and a beard almost ran into us - without looking he said “it’s crazy down there man…” The three of us had to laugh a little as we thought, “well of course it is - the finish line - after the game lets out – walk off win - on a Marathon Monday” (after all we have been doing this for 10+ years now).
We kept walking and began to hear siren after siren sounding off - people saying things like “something’s going on…something happened…” We were now a block away from the location of the 2nd bomb – 10 minutes after it had gone off.
We stood at the corner of Boylston and Gloucester Street with a crowd of people…There was allot of speculation and confusion, it was a bomb, it was construction, gunmen, a back fire, it was a group of terrorists…Whatever it was - it didn't seem real. Looking down Boylston we began to see people who were affected by the explosions walking in stunned, bloodied, slow motion towards us. The police had just started getting organized and began blocking off the street, chaos was setting in. I asked a Boston Police officer…”what should we do, where should we go?” In some strange surreal moment where time seemed to slow, the noise went to silence, and the chaos moved to peace; he pointed us towards a near hotel lobby. It was like a movie sequence when everything stops around a character and then instantly starts again.
Sean led us back through the hotel, to the Pru, to the car, and we were able to get out of the parking garage just before the whole city was locked down.
In the days following the bombing Miki played me a new song she had written: “Never Broken” - inspired by the events, by the men and women who put their lives on the line each day, the people who made it through, the people who did not. At the above link you can find the studio version of the song “Never Broken” produced by Crit Harmon off of our latest EP “Departing”. We’d like to share it with you as we reflect back on 2 years ago today - Boston Marathon Monday.”
