Prioritizing a Healthy Sex Life In Relationships
In any healthy relationship between two people, communication is fundamental. That is no different when it comes to healthy sex life. In our society, sex seems to be a taboo topic in a sense. On one hand, it is obvious that sex sells, and as Black women, we are often hypersexualized beginning at a young age. On the other hand, thanks to patriarchy, women discussing sex are not seen as ladylike or acceptable. We often receive messages that the purpose of sex is to please the other partner or create life. But not about our pleasure or needs. If a woman decides to embrace her sexuality and take freedom in how she gets her sexual needs met, she may be ridiculed, judged, or called any of the many derogatory names in the book. However, if a woman decides to be more conservative with her sexuality, she may also be judged as prude or too picky. When you’re made to feel like you can’t win, either way, it can be hard to feel safe to communicate your likes and dislikes. Continue Reading
10 Things To Remember if You're Chronically Overwhelmed
Feeling chronically overwhelmed may be a trauma response. Trauma activates the flight or fight response in our bodies. This activation engages the sympathetic nervous system. Sympathetic nervous system activation releases stress hormones like cortisol and epinephrine. In the presence of danger, these hormones help us survive. When danger is not present, these hormones can cause you to feel overwhelmed and can lead to physical symptoms of stress to include increased heart rate, sweating and digestive issues. After experiencing trauma, it is possible that your sympathetic nervous system may be hyperactivated. This hyperactivation may culminate in chronically feeling stressed, on edge, hypervigilant, jumpy or on guard. It may be difficult to relax. The good news is that you can reset a hyperactivated nervous system through trauma healing.

How Can We Navigate Survivor’s Guilt?
Survivor’s guilt can be thought of as a concept in which a person experiences highly stressful or even traumatic event(s) alongside others and survives or escapes while others around them may have experienced a different outcome. Sometimes, the event doesn’t have to be experienced directly alongside others but typically occurs within a similar life experience or context. The event is often out of the person’s control and/or related to experiencing different circumstances or outcomes. Survivors’ guilt can often (but not always) occur alongside other psychological concerns, including Post-traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD. Continue Reading
Teaching Others How To Treat You
I know reading this title you’re probably thinking “Jasmine, how do I teach people how to treat me” or “I can’t control what people do”. I hear you because those are both very valid points. You certainly cannot force people to act a particular way or control them. However, we have a little more control than we give ourselves credit for. There are certain actions you can take to teach others what is and is not acceptable when it comes to how they treat you. These behaviors can lead to more fulfilling and healthy relationships.
Reflect on how you treat yourself
I often share with clients and loved ones the importance of treating themselves well. The habits you form, how you treat your body, and even how you speak to yourself are all vital for your mental health. When you treat yourself poorly it can lead to low confidence, increased feelings of depression, and cause relational challenges. In addition, how you treat yourself can often influence how others feel they can treat you. If you’re continuously engaging in negative self-talk, others may get the impression that it is also okay to talk to you negatively.

Let's Get Real About Touch Deprivation
During the Covid-19 pandemic, we started to recognize how much of our daily habits were taken from us. We were no longer going into the office or school, which resulted in not receiving hugs before leaving for the day, or handshakes, holding hands, or friendly hugs from colleagues or other people you would typically interact with. Due to how contagious the virus was, we were barely touching or being close enough to loved ones either. Which is why I think touch deprivation started to be discussed more around that time. However, receiving touch has always been important for us. When babies are first born, parents are told to have skin to skin contact to not only promote bonding, but to help regulate their temperature, heart rate and breathing. Being touched boosts the release of oxytocin, also known as the “love hormone,” which is commonly released during childbirth, breastfeeding, and orgasm. It aids with increasing attachment and empathy, and decreasing anxiety and depression. According to WebMD, human touch also helps to regulate sleep, digestion, and builds your immune system. Some people may be surprised to learn that the skin is the largest organ in the body. It’s what’s often most exposed but not as protected as the other organs.
