Hakaii'ka's Notes Day 2:
"The poverty of the unemployed is the gateway to poverty for the employed" -Paul Cockshott
Hakaii'ka's Notes Day 1:
"State Capitalism does not do away with the capitalist nature of the productive forces. The more the state takes over the means of production, the more it becomes the national capitalist, the more citizens it exploits. The workers remain wage laborers, proletarians. The capitalist relation is not done away with" -Freidrich Engels 'Anti-Dühring'

Huh we haven't posted in a while, lets hope we aren't busy this summer so we can actually make something
Hey Neil!
My dad has slowly been losing the ability to focus enough to read books in english (not an illness just getting old). That means he can't read most of the Discworld books because only 7 of them are translated and he read those already (and some others in a few different languages before his issues with focusing). I've been thinking of trying to translate for him one or two myself (probably starting with Eric or The Last Hero).
I have two questions:
- Are there any legal pitfalls I should fear?
- I know sometimes authors write notes for anyone that might translate their work. Do you know if Terry did that/ if I could find those notes? Or just any lists of jokes that I should make sure also work in translation (or just add a comment that this was funnier in the original).
(Since I am already here: Unless I missed one, there are 8 of your works translated in our language. Which my dad read and loved and I mostly read and loved. We also watched The Sandman and Good Omens as a family. My sister is very excited about Dead Boy Detectives and my dad about Anansi Boys)
If you are translating them as a personal thing, you are fine. I hope your father enjoys them.
Yooo based author moment

This is the Research we do to Write our Stories
(An Inaturalist page describing Ursus Arctos also known as the Brown Bear)
Do you see this? That is 34 tabs ranging in subject from the biology of bears, what time of year rabbits are spotted, decomposition rates under freezing conditions, Proto-Finnic linguistics, etc., etc. Our stories are thoroughly researched whilst also allowing creativity to exist within the science. I can't wait for y'all to read the story our writer Ayane Martinez created and did all this research for called Aksi & the Hunting Party. It's a female-led story that might be a little sapphic ;)

Ratman I know what we're gonna do today!
In Proto-Jöstic (PJH) there exists three words to describe a home.
The first is "Hamar" which means home, derrived from Proto-Germanic (PGmc) *Haimaz
The second specifically refers to a more prestigious type of home, a large house. In PJH this is called "Hosą" and is derrived from PGmc *hūsą.
The third is "Katą", it is borrowed from Proto-Finnic (PFin) *kota and refers to a tent or small round house.
The reason there is a difference between hosą and katą has to do with class distinctions and social relationships. The Finnic people of the region were subjugated by the Germanic migrators, and as such, more prestigious words and concepts are almost always derrived from Proto-Germanic and lower class wkrss are borrowed from Proto-Finnic (Think French words in English). The traditional housing structures of the Finnic peoples would have been seen as lower class and as such a distinction is made between the germanic style precursor to the Norse longhouse and the traditional Finnic round/tent style homes.
