@thereal21jumpstreet
randomly spotted someone had uploaded a scene from the original version - out of context this may not mean much, but hitting where it did when I watched the full story for the first time, it left the song forever burned in my head and associated with this show
Blindsided, Part 2
... so yes, this episode is shaping up to be rather more serious than the last one.
Back at the chapel...
Fuller’s updating them on the case being built against the dealer they nabbed at the burger joint. He’s out on bail at the moment, and has a history of dangerous violence, so the McQuaids need to be careful with their cover.
“Because if he finds out who you are, he will kill you. And that generates massive paperwork, so don’t let it happen.”
Looks like Tom isn’t reporting his little encounter with Diane yet.
Night, somewhere? Then a shot in an alley, then a pair of shiny shoes walking, not sure where we’re going with this.
A hand fumbles with a doorknob, then searches the area for a spare key...
... Doug is innocently asleep on the couch, unaware that someone is trying to get inside...
Blindsided - Part 1
New episode! Let’s hope I get into this one more.
We open in the chapel, with Penhall calling Tom over. “You gotta see this. I discovered this guy...”
Ah. There’s Blowfish.
So yeah, this guy is the janitor. “Go on, show him!” Doug pleads.
“I gotta fix the heater...”
“You fixed the heater last week!”
“If I fixed the heater permanently, I’d be out of a job.”
Doug calls over Judy and Harry to see the trick, and just before the credits roll, we get:
... up against the window.
RL, this is what the guy got hired for. Well, that and being an old buddy of Johnny Depp’s. He’ll be hanging out in the chapel and occasionally chatting with the guys for a season or so.
Anyway, on to the plot!
Another episode, another highschool. And a song starting up... whoa. It’s a Concrete Blonde song? (This surprises me because I don’t remember them being a thing until years later... in fact, we’re going to have a Jump Street episode named after a Concrete Blonde song a few years down the line, iirc. Guess I missed the first albums.)
Anyway, we get a bunch of establishing shots of different high school kids joking around or staring sadly out windows, most of whom don’t seem important. The camera lingers slightly on
in a way that suggests she’s probably an important character (we’ll see if I guess right), and the music fades away as two guys approach the school...
Two notes here! One, pre-Twin Peaks Sherilyn Fenn! So yeah, that girl is definitely a major plot character. And also, while it may be hard to tell, that’s Doug and Tom coming in together, Tom looking all tough with rags tied round his head, which means this is probably the first appearance of their cover identity as The McQuaid Brothers.
21 Jump Street (1987-1991)
We haven’t gotten to Blowfish yet, but someday this might be relevant.
Bad Influence, Part 3
Lauren is not thrilled to find out that Judy’s a cop.
“So neither one of us is who we said we were! Lauren, I know there’s no house in Connecticut, no Porsche, no father... I know what you’re doing.”
“What I do is no different from what every other woman ends up doing.”
There’s an argument to be made that the distinction between prostitution and marriage-for-financial-gain may be arbitrary.
Judy points out that Lauren is also involved in burglary and tries to push for more information, but...
... Lauren just drives away.
Johnny Depp for 21 Jump Street | 1987-91
Bad Influence, Part 2
Lauren’s date offers her a beer. “Oops... I broke a nail.”
He promises that his parents won’t be home for hours as he leads her upstairs.
Kissing ensues, and the guy seems somewhat overwhelmed by her hungry come-on. Maybe he’s never done this before.
“Hey, it’s okay, honey,” she reassures him. “Don’t be nervous. We’ve got plenty of time... and you’ve got plenty of money.”
Tom and Doug are following the kids’ trail to a swanky hotel, where they apparently reserved the presidential suite, claiming themselves to be ‘Mr Steel’ and ‘Mr Bond’. The cops can’t believe the hotel went along with that. The waitress said she thought they were just rich kids having fun until she saw their pictures in the paper.
“They were excellent guests. They paid up-front in cash. They tipped well. They even filled out the evaluation form.”
“Everyone’s worried that these kids are dead, and they’re out there auditioning for Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous...”
Bad Influence, Part 1
So, can we get something less depressing this time around?
We open with someone walking in a city street at night, and a song I can actually locate! It’s Robert Cray, “No Big Deal”.
The figure walks along, kicks a can, tries a doorknob (locked)...
tries another, also locked, and pounds his fist once under the ‘Deliveries’ sign. Finally reaches a door labeled ‘Artie’s Deli’, which opens, and he goes inside...
We get a couple of ‘stalker’ shots, where we see only the footsteps of the intruder and then his camera angle moving in on this unsuspecting kid from behind...
“Any last words, kid?”
Tom Hanson (Johnny Depp) – 21 Jump Street – Mean Streets and Pastel Houses
It’s a bit strange on the surface that at the end, Tom is all cuddling up to Judy in a comforting way, soothing her as if she were fragile, when she’s one of the people who had the easiest day. Doug also had it pretty good, but he was at least in a state of deep worry over whether Hanson was alive or not, before he got into the school. Harry’s taken several hard knocks and probably should be checked over by a medic. Tom saw his life flash before his eyes at least twice today, more if you count just the threats and not the ‘i’m dying RIGHT THIS SECOND’ moments.
Compared to the others, Judy was relatively safe and in control all episode.
Of course if you’re desperate to go deeper, you can read it as him giving her the comfort that he really wishes for himself but will never openly reach for. He’s a bit of a buttoned-up guy, our Hanson.
Gotta Finish the Riff, Part 5
Harry’s climbing through the air vents, which TVTropes warns us is actually going to make way too much noise to be any use for stealth.
Judy’s stirring the pot, digging out Reggie’s file to show that he got non-terrible SAT scores (The dialog acts like it was a good score, I’m confused because to me it’s not, but whatever) and an A in English. He tries to grab it from her.
The gangers are surprised at these good grades. Tom, who got a failing grade in shutting up, cuts in with “Hey, Reggie, if you’re so smart, how come you’re so dumb?”
You can imagine how well that goes...
Gotta Finish the Riff, Part 4
(A lot of action means a lot of screenshots, I’m afraid.)
Outside, the SWAT teams arrive.
And the media.
And the rest of the Jump Street team. (Say hi to Robert Picardo over there if you’re a Star Trek Voyager fan - he’s playing Ralph Buckley, Hostage Negotiator.)
Gotta Finish the Riff, Part 3
There’s an ironic statement to be made somewhere about me having to force myself to come back and finish this, so much later.
When we left off, the school had been taken over by an armed gang, and Tom (still wandering the halls in nerd guise) was watching them chain the doors shut.
Unfortunately at this point his luck runs out and the roaming gang members spot him...
... so he punches a guy and flees up the stairs, apparently not believing they’ll shoot him in the back.
Gang member pursues him and tackles him to the ground.
Tom grabs his gun (the ganger’s, I think, not his own)
but appears to have forgotten that he’s outnumbered. Checkmate.
Gotta Finish the Riff, Part 2
Cut to the school, and a car pulling up out front.
Oh look, it’s our gang friends.
We also get a song, which all my attempts to ID are so far failing. If anyone knows what this is PLEASE let me know and I will replace with proper credits, but neither lyrics search nor song apps are finding any matches: Slammin’
It’s almost a full minute of pure music as these guys swagger into the school, wish I could tell what it was!
