In middle school we had a sub that only lasted two months before she cracked and stopped teaching, but through no fault of our own I swear.
For context, she was from one of those really northern states. Dunno why she decided to substitute teach in bumfuck nowhere but that aint my business.
For MORE context, I live in Texas and for early formative years, I lived in what many would call “redneck country”. Like, REALLY isolated from the rest of town until like, 4th grade when we moved into town. (Like, the bus couldn’t even get down the dirt road, we’d have to walk or be driven to the bus stop cuz it was too narrow for the buses to safely go down).
It wasn’t uncommon, lots of kids lived out where I was cuz it was a relatively poor area.
And as you can imagine, i picked up a very…deep accent. Didn’t help that when we moved to town we moved to a Hispanic neighborhood and I picked up Spanish (cuz kids brains are soft and squishy and absorb shit like crazy) and that got mixed in (fr tho being immersed in a language does help you learn faster)
Anyways, by middle school, we all had DEEP accents we were blind to cuz we were so used to hearing them from each other.
And it drove this sub absolutely bonkers how we’d talk. She especially HATED the conjunctions.
Including, but not limited to: ain’t, wasn’t (pronounce wadn’t), general (gen-ral), and a bunch other stuff.
Said it wasn’t proper speaking and we should learn to speak properly.
We’d all go around and around in circles over this because it really did drive her crazy we were speaking grammatically correct.
Now, before this I had briefly transferred schools and only returned right before she showed up. So her first impression of me, was an absolutely horrendous mix of Deep South slang with a smidge of a Spanish accent (we literally just left the neighborhood to move in with my grandma so that was fresh as hell) and I still think that was one of the final straws for her.
To this day I don’t know why she cared so much about how we talked, when even the ADULTS talked like that. And it wasn’t like we were purposely antagonizing her, we were all like, maybe 9 or 10.
I wish I was joking but this woman was literally on our case from day one for some reason. And most of the time she subbed math. No speaking really involved but ig it drove her nuts how we pronounced things.
