A New Pinned Post For A New Era

Hi everyone! I decided I would make a new pinned post since I've decided to return to this blog after taking a few months of an accidental hiatus. Still Madeline (she/her) and still a practitioner/mystic/witch. Still progressive, still pro LGBTQ+, still pro Palestine, and still pro choice. There will still be a zero tolerance for zionism, islamaphobia, anti semitism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, or any hatred towards marginalized communities. If you've got a problem with it, then just simply don't engage because I am liberal with a block and report button.

I was confirmed in the Episcopal Church on June 1st of 2025 and have since moved to New England for an amazing job. While I'm sad to leave my family and my home in the Deep South, I'm excited to see what this new journey will teach me.

I'm still reconstructing, but I think it will be a life long process of taking back Christianity from the communities that have used it to harm me and members of my community. It's getting easier though, and with the church community I have found it is going to be done in such a safe and welcoming space.

I'd like to post more about being a witch/practitioner especially in the context of my spiritual beliefs and practices being a little too complex for me to just define myself as a Christian (aka I work with spirits and deities from pagan pantheons). Putting a label on it would probably be Christopagan, but I do just like to let me beliefs and practices develop and change as they go.

Kitchen Witchery: Blessing My Coffee to Start My Day

I start my day with a cup of coffee. I'm pretty sure I inherited my love of caffeine from my daddy who, rest his soul, had coffee in his cup at all times between 6am and roughly 6pm. I think the sacredness of coffee in the morning started with him. When I was growing up, he'd fix me a cup right alongside his, and we'd take a moment to just exist together and enjoy our coffees.

Now, coffee is still part of my day, but these rituals have changed. I find myself in the kitchen, usually while my partner is still sleeping and the day hasn't quite set in fully, holding my favorite mug in hand. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. Strong coffee, splash of creamer. Sometimes I'll make it iced, if the mood strikes.

But this has become one of the most magical parts of my day. I breathe in the scent of coffee and let it ground me. Comfort washes over me. I let myself just be in that moment, one brief and beautiful moment where I feel almost untouchable.

And then, before that first sip, I whisper a little blessing. It doesn't have to be anything poetic, but it always feels like the verbal equivalent of the flow of porch light. A soft, warm comfort, something that lets me know I am home.

These blessings are usually things like, "Let this day be gentle. Let the path I'm on lead me where I'm meant to be.", or "May I do my part to make the world a little kinder today." Other mornings, I might simply ask for the things I need: courage, hope, peace. Whatever the case, I whisper it into my cup and let the steam carry it away.

It's such a simple sort of magic, something that reminds me that ritual doesn't have to be anything big or elaborate. I stir with intention and let myself be present. It tells me that even on the most chaotic of mornings, I can choose the tone of my day instead of letting the world choose it for me.

And then that first sip settles in, warm and comforting. It anchors me. It reminds me that I have permission to start slow, to take time for myself.

It is such a sacred moment, a quiet sort of magic, and it carries me forward one sip, one breath, one step at a time.

Lighting Candles When the Days Grow Shorter

On drawing light into the darker days.

It's usually around this point in November that the light shifts in a way I really can't ignore.

Mornings seem to linger in a blue-gray quiet, evening comes before you expect, and daylight hours seem to slip through your fingertips, no matter how much you try to hold onto it. I know it's just a natural part of the cycle, but it still gives me pause. I have to stop and sit with my wonder as the sure and steady dark begins to set in.

And every year, I meet that darkness with a flame.

Lighting candles in the darker months isn't just habit; it's a soft ritual that I think I need this time of year. It's a quiet sort of kindness, one that I give to myself and those around me. It's a reminder that even as the world begins to darken, as it quiets down and turns inward, I can still coax a warm glow back into my home. I have lighting and electricity, so I know the darkness is never fully here, but there's still something so wonderful about the candle's flame. When I see that warm spark grow into something steady, it feels like greeting an old friend.

I keep candles in every corner of my domestic life. On the kitchen counter by the stove, on the coffee table, by my partner's workspace. Each one serves a purpose. Each one brings a little more warmth into the home. It's pure whimsy speaking, but I like to think of them as borrowed sunlight, little promises that we will endure to see the bright days again.

There's a sort of power in choosing to bring more light into the world. It reminds me that witchcraft doesn't have to be elaborate and flashy all the time. Sometimes it's as simple as taking a deep breath, whispering a blessing as the flame catches ("For the light I need, and the light I can give." is one of my favorite blessings for any occasion). Sometimes, all you need is a moment of stillness and candle's flame, and all the pieces fall back into place.

Of course, the darkness isn't something to fight against. As I said earlier in this, it's natural, part of the cycles of the world. Instead, it's something to walk through with intention. Lighting candles doesn't banish the season; it honors it. I don't draw light into the darkness to overpower it. I do it to remind myself that even the smallest glow can change the room.

So, while the days shrink, I will keep lighting my candles at nightfall. I will bring the flame into my home. A flame that says I will make my own light when the world dims.

At the heart of it, I think that perfectly encompasses what my magic is- gentle, steady, and stubbornly bright, a small spark of hope.

I don't accept the narrative that you shouldn't use baneful magic frivolously. I mean, obviously there are some stupid things you could do. Don't hex kids or animals, don't put a generational curse on someone for stealing your parking spot or something.

But if someone fucks you over and hurts your feelings? Make them feel it. If someone is a dickhead? Yeah looks like they're gonna hit every single red light the next time they drive to work.

Don't go in for overkill, but giving someone what they deserve plus a bit more is a great way to remove your negativity from yourself AND get a tiny piece of justice. It's a win win.

The narrative that baneful magic is bad or scary or dangerous started as anti indigenous propaganda that exists so that the oppressed feel they shouldn't take on their oppressors. So I don't buy it.

Give them hell. You have my permission.

This obviously doesn't apply to the outlier cases where a person is going through shit and using baneful magic just because they can. Have a reason for it if you're gonna do it, even if that reason isn't as big as the ones other people do it for. If you have a reason and it's a valid one, fuck em.
