My new archenemy. It hurts so good
I follow 1,369 fitblrs and somehow my dash is still facking dead!
Please reblog if you’re an active fitblr with some personality (;
Getting there
I'm only 5 pounds away from my goal. As of this morning I've lost 75 pounds. To exceed my wildest goal, I still need to lose 25 pounds or 7.142 pounds per month by Jan 15, 2014 to hit 100 total pounds lost.
Anyway, I have a list that I keep on my desktop that tells me how much stuff weighs. It's a fun way of feeling proud about shedding the fat. Here's the list:
But it got me thinking about 75 pounds. And with a quick @Google search I was able to find this website about a person that wants to lose 75 pounds: http://lastoneeating.wordpress.com/2012/01/31/things-that-weight-75-pounds/
I feel proud to say that I have lost 75 pounds or, as much as 2.5 cinder blocks. Hell yeah.
Nearing 8 months
Sunday marks 8 months since my wife and I began our new healthier lifestyle. That's 8 months and 101 combined pounds lost! That's 8 months of feeling better. That's 8 months of eating better. That's 8 months of looking better.
We've had our ups and downs, but we have stayed the course over the past 240 days (roughly.) I am only 7 pounds away from my goal weight and she is only 5 pounds off. I strongly believe we'll both beat our goals before Thanksgiving. Then we'll create more goals and beat those too.
I wrote an epic email yesterday in response to a friend asking "how have you done it?" The email was longer than any email has a right to be, but it was fun to write. I got to write about our diet (what we eat, how we eat it, and when.) I got to write about our workouts (what we do, how we do it, and when.) Writing the email became cathartic. I didn't realize that I needed to write the email and articulate our struggles and triumphs as much as I would have thought. It also made me realize that our relative success losing weight and adopting a healthier lifestyle is only a success if we keep the weight off and continue to instill healthy lifestyle habits. We have two young kids and like most parents, we hope to set great examples for them. There was no way I could have done that if I weight kept ballooning.
My first set of progress pics. Nervous to post these to the interwebs, but thought it was worth it for all those that are struggling with their weight and trying to get fit. The first picture is from May 30, 2013 when I was already 4.5 months into my reclamation project and down 57 lbs from my starting weight. The last picture is from this morning, Sept 7, 2013, almost 8 months into my personal reclamation project and down 70 lbs. I'm not where I want to be yet, but I'll get there.
Hell yeah
New Personal Record 5k today. Although it was indoors on a deadmill.
Proper night time running gear
Quick afternoon snack before heading out the door.
Check-in Time
Starting date 1/15/2013
Current Weight = 235.2 lb (-70)
BMI = 33.7 (-10.1)
% weight loss = 22.89
Pant size = 36 (-4/5)
I can't tell you how proud and happy I am with the success I've had with my new lifestyle. I know my battle with weight problems is far from over and I will continue to struggle with food. But I will not stop. I will not go back to being the lovable lazy book nerd. I am back to my old self and have reinvigorated the athlete that was dormant for 10 years. I played varsity soccer and baseball as a freshman in high school in 1993, followed by years of competitive sports until I was 24. Then I forgot who I was and became lazy. I became complacent with putting weight on and living a non-active lifestyle. Reading took precedence over my health. I thought I had to choose between reading/writing/learning and exercising. I was crazy not realize that I couldn't do both. That thousands of people were doing both...and more.
I'm attending my cousin's wedding on Saturday and I will be wearing new pants, the same size as when I was graduating high school 16 years ago. I always thought I'd be happy to be down to a size 38 pant. I was kidding myself. This is never going to end. I may only have 10 pounds to go to meet my 1 yr goal (with 4 mos left to reach it,) but I really have over 20 lbs to lose to get the fat off my midsection. My legs have always been large and muscular (like a football fullback) and I hope that they continue to get stronger with all the running and squats I've been doing. However, there is still plenty of fat in my legs that can be lost as well.
So that means I'm really looking to weigh around 210-215. If I don't get there by Jan. 15, 2014, that's ok. I have the rest of my life to get there. And now that I'm healthier, that means I'll have many more years ahead of me.
Whoa
It's been over 2 months since I posted here. I can't believe it. Over the past 60+ days I've learned so much about myself and look forward to sharing it all with you.
First off, though I haven't lost a whole lot of weight over my time away from @Tumblr, my body composition has changed. That's mostly because I was focusing on strength training trying to build lean muscle, while burning fat, but the scale didn't really show much movement. During this time I realized that I enjoy lifting weights much more than I do running. However, I felt like I was missing out on something when I stopped running.
The second thing I learned is that even though those of us trying to lose weight develop healthier eating and lifestyle habits, if I don't track my food consumption, I don't lose weight. I didn't gain a single pound, but I was not nearly as successful with my diet as I was when I tracked my food.
And the third thing I realized over the past 60+ days, is that I really want to lose weight more than build muscle right now. I know many people would say this is ridiculous and I mostly agree. But I want to see the dial on the scale change. That gives me motivation. I intend to build muscle, but for now I have two newly defined goals: to lose a total of 80 lbs and to fit a size 34 pant. I hope to accomplish these goals by January 15, 2014, which would be the one year anniversary of my new lifestyle.
As of today, 7.5 months into my transformation, I have lost 68 lbs and fit a size 36 pant. I still only own size 38, but I've tried on 36 and they fit perfectly. My original goal was to lose 100 lbs between January 15, 2013-January 15, 2014. Goals need to be reevaluated and changed as required. This I believe.
I also believe in setting realistic goals for yourself. I know these goals work for me and push me to try harder, live smarter, and take pride in what I'm doing. You can call the goals arbitrary, but to me they symbolize a new person. A very different person than the one that started this reclamation project this past January.
To achieve my goals, I have begun running again. I am going to run 4-5 times per week and do some strength training on my days off. I believe running has helped me lose the most visceral fat and drop the most weight.
None of this would have been possible if I didn't have an incredible partner during all of this. My wife has been right beside me the entire time, reinventing herself too. She has lost 27 lbs since January and is as fit and happy as ever. After having two kids in 2.5 years, she is now more fit than when we met 7 years ago. She's also running for the first time in her life. We're also strength training together on Saturdays. I'm getting her to do her first ever squats this week! She was a competitive figure skater for over 15 years, but she never trained like an athlete. Until now.
Earlier in August we even ran our first 5K together. Appropriately, she beat me by about 10 seconds. We plan on running at least one 5K each month through the end of the year.
Current weight = 237 lbs
Goal weight = 225 lbs
Current pant size = 36
Goal pant size = 34
Day 147 - Tue 6/11/2013
Workout - strength training
Kettlebells (kb)
10 kb swings (25# kb)
10 jump lunges
10 kb push press (25# kb)
x6
I'm going to continue strength training for the rest of the month to see if I can really begin to cut down on my body fat. I've always enjoyed working with weights more than running, so it should be a good change of pace for me.
In my Day 147 workout, I was supposed to use kb's during the jump lunges, but I couldn't. I had never done them before and balancing was hard enough without the weight. I did this workout at home with the only kb that I own, but next time I'll hit the gym and use 2 kb's.
This workout is from Kris Cochrane. He's insane. Here's his instructional video.
Yes it is.
