Fighting for my life trying not to download any more apps on my phone.

small things u can do to resist technocracy
reject all cookies on websites
change the settings in instagram/facebook/etc to disallow personalized ads or third party sharing
disable third party sharing for each of your tumblr blogs
use an alternative to "twitter" like bsky
switch your browser from chrome, safari, or edge to firefox
add the ublock extension to firefox
switch your search engine from google to duckduckgo
install screenzen or other limits for tiktok, reels, or shorts
delete the "si=" and everything after it in youtube links (these are trackers and do not impact the video)
check ebay before resorting to amazon
clear your google account of all history and personal data (this is sort of a pain the ass by design, you may need to poke around the settings for a while)
cut down on second-screening (using multiple devices at once like using your phone during a movie or putting youtube/netflix on as background noise for scrolling or gaming)
let yourself be bored sometimes
This video is so beautiful. I think it captures how much iPhones have absorbed and taken away the little things that make life so meaningful and fun. The Swiss army knife analogy was really brilliant. When I was a kid, I wanted to be an adult and use a pay phone, have my own CD collection, read lot and lots of books, walk to the library and idk explore with my friends and not know something and find out the answer together! and yes, I can do all of those things now but why would I? Why would anyone? it's all right here in my pocket!
"What I didn't anticipate how much better life is, everything is rich-"
this quote was really cute and made me smile. hope you will consider this and we all can explode our phones together <3
NEWPAPERS, THEY KILLED NEWSPAPERS OH MY GOD HOW COULD I FORGET!!!!!
My hometowns local newspaper died like? almost a decade ago and it makes me so upset!!!! it's not even a small town or anything like idk man. The only newspapers I see nowadays are The Washington Post, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. that's it. I genuinely don't remember the last time I saw someone read a local newspaper. or talk about them?!?
Depressing. :(
Something I've noticed
Every time I find a YouTube video or experiment about dumbphones/getting away from social media, they go "wow l loved this experiment and I feel so much better bc I feel like I have time for the things I love, I have reconnected with the world and found a way out from the lab rat experiment that Big Technology is pushing on us" and then they turn around and go "well unfortunately I need an app to do my laundry, collect my mail, as navigation, open this thing, and access this thing that I couldn't get to otherwise." The examples are endless. It makes me really irritated and it doesn't make any sense to me why we are letting this happen? idk what if something happens to your phone, what about homeless people, what about poor people, what about personal privacy? lots of things.
I think that I'm going to try and find some literature on the subject and report back later.

I can't believe that I'm about to say this but,
I miss cable tv.
I miss being able to tune into a show at X time every couple weeks and the excitement of waiting. of anticipation.
Asking my friends if they are going to be tuning in at the same time as me. I don't want to be sitting here watching a TV show all by myself without engaging with other people for hours and hours and hours.
It makes me upset when I chose to watch a show and then it's all gone and I ask around and no one has seen it. no one will humor me and say yes, I will set aside time to watch this and spend 3 days binge watching it but that's not fair. not reasonable and I know that.
maybe it's not cable TV that I miss but being able to consume media normally
or maybe not?
Some of you can’t handle the fact that the truth is literally out there
I like that we’ve kind of cycled back to the early 90s TV’s fearful attitudes about technologies
Like yeah, X-Files, I wouldn’t get into an elevator run by AI either, good call in 1993, you nailed it
The reason for my blog name
is that sometimes my phone will die or I will leave it at home when I go somewhere. and this feeling a peace will wash over me, and my head will feel clear.
I will drive around or read a book, and I will be temporarily freed from this mental weight of always being available.
I don't have to worry about the texts or emails or notification or calls or reminders or health stats or screen time reminders or bills or anything that could pop up on my screen and distract me from the moment I am living in.
I get to be by myself.
I get to turn my attention to something completely.
I get to wonder and learn and think without the crutch of technology crippling my mind.
but then of course I have to go back to the real world.
and I can't shake the feeling of being watched. monitored. it makes my head hurt and there's a buzzing in my ear.
mourning my lost attention span
I HATE MY PHONE.
ITS NOT FUNNY ANYMORE, I NEED A FUCKING FLIP PHONE, AN MP3 PLAYER, A CD BURNER AND A CD PLAYER. I HATE INSTAGRAM, I HATE TIKTOK, I HATE TWITTER, I HATE SPOTIFY, I HATE STREAMING, I HATE MY PHONE I HATE MY PHONE I HATE MY PHONE I HATE MY PHONE I HATE MY PHON
I JUST WANT TO BE OFFLINE.
anyway, how are you guys doing? x3
on a lighter note! here are some things i love:
cds, music, physical media, cd players, record players, dvd players, pirating, digital cameras, camcorders, polaroids.
what do u love?
I feel the same way, I have been going to half priced books to collect CDs and I'm going to start doing the same for movie and tv shows. ive been saving up to get a flip phone. and then I'm going to buy a camera. anyway
I love scrapbooking with my friends. going out to the store to buy supplies and waiting to see all of the photos we took. I love creating secrete messages behind the photos before we glue them down. I love going on walks and hearing the bird's tweet. I love buying a CD with my friend and not knowing what to expect.
My apartment just updated our keypad. The only outside the gate. It was a normal metal keypad, and you had to lean out of your car to press the buttons. Either that or you could drive up on the curb to get closer and that worked really well.
They were supposed to give out key fobs when you moved in. Little plastic gray rectangles. So, it would be really easy to just drive up to the gate and click the button. no leaning required. but they didn't and I really enjoying rolling up and clicking the keypad. I always thought now nice it was compared to some of the other apartments where they have these little ugly screens that looked smudgy and flimsy. and on our mailbox, we have a screen. I've never gotten the mail it takes to much time, and you need a verification code which is stupid. I hear some people have to go through a pay wall? doesn't sound right to me.
anyway, I got an email a few days ago "Exiting News-Gate/Amenity System Has Been Upgraded!-Please Read!"
we had a change in management a few months ago and since then they haven't been closing the gate. I should have made a complaint but that would require effort. so, my first thought was that the thing was broken and how it has been fixed.
"Instead, all gate entry points will be controlled through Virtual Gate Access via the MyQ Community App on your mobile device.
This is a remote style control operated straight from your smartphone!"
oh my
god.
What?
why?
✅ Bluetooth Compatibility with Apple Devices – Enjoy hands-free access with supported Apple devices that can connect via Bluetooth!
✅ All entry areas are now fully integrated with the MyQ app for seamless access.
✅ No more opening the gate through your window in the rain!
right. Right.
Beginning February 2026, there will be a $5.00 monthly recurring charge for MyQ app access per individual with access.
If you need help to set up your MyQ account, our friendly team at the Leasing Office is here to assist you!
someone fucking kill me.
I'm so tired of convenance. I don't want to fucking pay some shitty app 5 bucks every month to be able to enter my own apartment complex. are we serious? "But you probably had to pay for the old one" sure. to the apartment complex and the fee is included in my rent. sure. but are they going to take out the maintenance fee to the replace the new 5-dollar monthly charge. Fucking of course not. "But it's only 5 dollars that not that much" sure. fine. whatever. Fuck you.
that's not the point. when are we supposed to stop and say you know what this is enough I don't want to pay a shitty subscription for everything. for a gate, the gym, my favorite shows and movies, for silly video games, for food services, a calorie tracker, a period tracker, my friends glucose monitors app on her phone, YouTube so I can close my phone and still have the video play. we pay for all of these things and 99% of the time they still have ads? I'm sitting here watching the x-files on the Hulu app that I can only access though a subscription and why in the hell am I getting ads about weightless pills and insurance every 15 minutes?
I'm just so tired fighting for my own attention. my own thoughts and action are controlled by someone else.
I would like to hear from other people about their experiences and how they deal with situations like this so please lmk.
I Have had an iPhone for a decade and a half
I got my first iPhone when I was in 5th grade. I have carried around a supercomputer in my pocket since I was 11. I don't think that should be true, but it is. I do not know how to be bored anymore, I can't tell the time from anything but an analog clock. I don't know how to make a phone call without typing into my phone "how do I ask for X" or "is X a normal question to ask". How am I supposed to be intelligent if I can't spell the word without auto correct? I don't know my own address by heart because all I have to do is ask my phone. What kind of sick joke am I living in? People are dying and all I am worried about is how to drive across town without GPS. I spend 6 Hours a day on my phone and I applaud myself because it's so much better than my friends 18. I don't do my homework because thinking makes my head hurt. I don't go to the gym because its inconveniently not in my apartment, a whole half block away. Oh God. what am I going to do! "It's ok" they tell me, "You're not the only one, we all deal with this. it's not your fault" I feel better and continue scrolling.
