I’m feeling somber today. Our excursion on thanksgiving weekend to some of the most beautiful tribal lands I’ve ever seen has be inundated with an influx of tourism. So much so that they are building a parking lot and inputting port-a-potties on said land to accommodate for this overwhelming increase. As proud as I am about the interest our generation has instilled for the natural experience, I am equally, if not more, concerned for the preservation of these natural habitats. We often found ourselves frustrated with the attitudes and self-centered energy most of these tourists encumbered and sped through these dense but beautiful areas in order to find solitude (as pictured above). Now, if things couldn’t get worse, tribal land has been compromised for human gain. “Communication” was my word of the year in 2017. My goal was to strengthen relationships and areas in my life that could benefit from effective communication. As I reflect back on 2017, I don’t intend to measure my goals in terms of success or failure but in my active attempts to break old mental and emotional habits I’d developed through out my life. As I’m narrowing in on the right word for 2018, I’d like for it to encumber the focus and clarity I may have possibly stirred up during my strive towards last year’s goal. To put more time and energy into the things I’ve had interest in the last couple years but have shied away from due to lack of confidence.
