I took my nephew and niece to their first event when they were... five and seven? They each picked out a heavy and a rapier fighter to cheer on (we made favors for them to give as part of the Plan to Keep Little Kids Entertained™). They interpreted this to mean that they were to LOOK AFTER these fighters and spent the remainder of the day taking them water and sharing goldfish crackers with them.

You don’t know happiness until you see a little kid hand a Knight an Uncrustable and have him devour it gratefully.

So, in Tolkein lore, the world was originally flat, with most of the land in the middle (hence Middle Earth). But the Numenorians (men who were rewarded with their own Atlantis-equivalent island for service in the first big war against Melkor, but eventually Power Corrupts etc) tried to invade the uttermost west which was basically Elf Heaven. To put an end to that sort of thing, the creator of the world Bent The World and made it a sphere…but left elves able to treat it like a flat disk. So elves can sail west and reach Elf Heaven, but a man or dwarf or hobbit who sails west will eventually wrap around to the east coast of Middle Earth.

That’s a modern and ridiculous idea, come up with by modern men.

Half the warriors we’ve excavated from the Norse period are women. If someone would like to go back in time and tell those sheildmaids that they’re not eligible for Valhalla, well, I’m not going to shed any tears when the fools end up with an axe in their head.

The only way this would be true is if Freyja snapped up all the sheildmaidens who fell in battle before Odin got his pick. Freyja does, after all, get first choice of the slain. In which case, those sheildmaids would go to Folkvanger, Freyja’s hall, which is arguably even a better final resting place than Valhalla, as those in Folkvanger will survive Ragnarok and help Freyja rebuild the world.
