Yeah thanks to Khazaan, a lot of stallions have died in the last year. Geldings have a significantly shorter lifespan. With the two more recent wars and Khazaan’s bullshit their military size is… distressing… ohhhhh Shit.

The guards aren’t at all impressed, and even grimace at the mention of machinery and warpstone. “Ah yes, the loud and toxic hunks of metal your kind drag around…” hums the guard, looking up over his shoulder at his rider, who looks to feel similarly. “Is this really worth bothering the king?..” he asks. The rider wrinkles his snout in distaste. “I think his majesty’s time is a bit valuable for it… I think conflict may be entertaining enough, however…” This answer pleases his sentinel. “It has been a short while since we could sharpen the teeth of our hive on the whetstone of war… Arenas become so performative-“

“His majesty would be most displeased if you turned away a requested audience from an outsider.” Cuts in the short russet sentinel harshly. The pair before Ikit glare at him with a greater displeasure than the Skaven. “But there’s nothing of value offered! He would only serve to offend!” The rider huffs. Their bravado evaporates like water on hot pavement the moment the russet guard steps forward, the other immediately takes several steps to the side, pinning his ears and raising his head nervously. Even the brutes who brought Ikit from the outside back away, stallion included, blowing through his nose and arching his neck as a warning.

The russet gelding pays them no mind as he lumbers forward with flattened ears and a terrible scowl. His rider actually has to grab his scruff and pull him back to a stop before he got too close to their visitor. “Heyyy hey hey, happy ears, happy ears.” He reminds his steed. He then looks to the other pair. “You remain at post. We will take him.” The other rider opens his mouth to retaliate. He’s willing to argue with the other rider… But not his angry looking companion… So instead of answering, he taps his sentinel with his heel to move him back into position. Both are angry. Not as angry as the smaller guard. It’s not worth it…

The pair left before Ikit turns broadside, and the rider leans down to offer his hand. He’s a burly, blocky rat, muscular with an appreciative layer of fat insulation, a scruffy mustache like muzzle, a dark chocolate fur with white paws, any body markings are covered in his armor and fabric, and kind eyes. Serious. Amber in color. But kind. He taps his ride’s foreleg with his foot and clears his throat. The sentinel growls. But lifts his foot to act as a step for Ikit.

“Thank you… Now please come with me, Ikit, we will take you to the monarch.”

Ikit shrinks away a bit, behind the ones who stood to shield him from the sentinels, feeling like he was most unwelcome here. To be fair, the reason he was sent here was far from diplomatic... but now he felt like it'd be even more reason to try and convince the Council to NOT attempt a war with these rat-people! Not only did they seem fully eager and capable of bringing war... they were many times their size, some of them even rivaling their Rat Ogres! Hell, some of them might even rival Ghoritch himself in size!

Then the massive russet gelding steps forward, and Ikit's body reflexively tenses and he lets out an involuntary squeak of distress. This one seemed so eager to just flay him alive, but his rider seems to keep him at bay... for now. He looks up to the rider, seeing his surprisingly kind eyes, offering him aid up. He takes his paw and is hoisted up on the gelding's back, behind the rider.

"T-Thank you..." he squeaks out in relief/fear, letting himself be taken further into the Retchen kingdom. Curiosity finally breaks free, as he asks- "Are... your people-kin always this aggressive with each-other? Reminds Ikit a lot of Skaven squabbles... but ours involve more trickery-deceit and backstabbing."

The rider keeps a hand on Ikit, as well as uses his heavy tail to hold his passenger steady. Only when he’s sure Ikit is situated does he look forward and tap his sentinel with his heel. “Keep it slow, Duck, thank you.” His accent is heavy, and much different than all the other present rats. He pats Ikit’s arm in an attempt to be reassuring as their ride lumbers forward. The metal laden Skaven weighs nothing to ‘Duck’. “Anytime, stranger… Hm? Oh, no, not at all. N’ I wouldn’t call that aggressive, even, sentinels are jus’ a whole lot bigger than us, an’ a bit more physical. Nobody was bein’ mean, but the big one back ‘ere’s a stallion, they’re a good bit rougher ‘round the edges n’ like to be th’ boss.”

Even with his weathered voice, tough and low like worn leather, he speaks with an air of casualness one often wouldn’t with a national security concern. As they leave, the stud tosses his head and paces bitterly, the gelding keeps post with pinned ears to deter him. The riding guard points his spear out ahead of him when they start snapping teeth and warns the bigger sentinel back, but doesn’t seem genuinely concerned, more annoyed with the predictable behavior. If the two actually fought, the intact male would crush them both for sheer size…

His escorting forces pay no mind as they pass through the gates into the hive, where the flat stone changes to cobbled path. “Pardon me for not in’erducing myself beforehand, my name’s Obdorm, m’friends an’ foes alike call me O’blio, don’t ask what it means cause I couldn’t tell ya. This sweetheart here is my best friend Ducky, do not stand near his face or touch him when he’s workin’ les’ ye Ridin’ an even then. Don’t be near his face, he don’t like it… Well, that’s us, we’ve got a bit of a ride ahead, so go ahead n’ tell me about yourself, Ikit. N’ if you got any questions don’t hesitate to ask.”

Ducky is a rat of few words, who tilts his ears back to listen but doesn’t pipe up as he’s introduced.

Out this close to the wall there isn’t much but military outposts, even then there’s a mile and a half of empty caves and caverns to traverse before you reach any, the cobbled street is won and patchy, more to fill in gaps and dips to keep the wide road flat. When they finally reach the nearest buildings, there’s lots of sentinels that don’t like this Skaven already. Among them, Ducky is a runt, just like with the previous group. The buildings are harsh and simple, carved into walls out built from stone bricks and blocks harvested from hollowing out the cavern. Everything is built in a hexagonal grid. Here there are no pups, except the distant smell of sentinel pups who aren’t out with an outsider coming through. The smallest rats here stand over six feet in height, and weigh nearly three hundred pounds, these are as common as Obdorm’s weight class. The largest are roughly nine feet, and weigh over eight hundred. There’s very few of those. Those in armor walk or jog their drills in formation, and aren’t allowed to stop and gawk. There’s patches of ground covered in deep moss surrounded by a low fence where sentinels lounge, and other unfenced patches for other off duty rats with the occasional sentinel with them enjoying some scratches. If any get within twenty feet, Ducky throws his head and snaps his teeth, his heavy skull making a sound like a rifle shot, that keeps larger rats back. It’ll take fifteen minutes to get through and back out on the lonely stone, with the occasional traffic passing.

I should really do a post about how Retchen arousal/mating behaviors work because there is STILL very little sexual dimorphism, and social constructs around it gets very interesting with undesirable rats (mutts, infertile, runts) vs desirable rats (known bloodlines, high fertility, successful in career) and is more dominance, size, and hierarchy based than male vs female. Males and females are the same size aside sentinels.

With Gordon’s replacement rate so low they’re at an all time high of infertile rats and lack of reproductive pairings, so things have been very strange.

Retchen only wear half breast plates and never full back and chest plates because like normal rats, they can squish and fit into any hole their head can get through. Full breast and back plate means they lose all their squish. Half breast plate means they keep most of their squish and are still fully maneuverable.

Sentinels don’t wear armor or cover because their tails are so thick skinned they don’t let out heat as well as other Retchen’s tails, they sweat more, and putting armor or padding on their bodies risks overheating in situations they’d typically wear armor to the point it’s just not worth it. You may get POSSIBLY one plate over their hips where the saddle doesn’t protect them, and one for the face.
