FEBRUARY 15, 1979 | AFTERMATH

Though Death Eaters participated in the chaos in the business districts, they did so as themselves. No dark marks were shot into the sky, no robes were worn, and masks were left at home. To the magical community at large, it appears that the community has begun to turn on itself, with polarizing forces on either end of the political spectrum. Newspapers run different theories and though the auror office declares it is hunting for perpetrators, they have quite little to go on with so few witnesses to the actual destruction and crimes that have taken place.

Politically, the dismantling of muggleborn businesses on Valisblot serves as an impetus for more legislation. Abraxas Malfoy, as Interim Minister of Magic, calls for a swift resolution to the infighting of the magical community. “We must protect all with magical blood,” he tells the crowd at the February 15 press conference. While he does not wish to appear heavy-handed, he tells reporters that he intends to bring forth a resolution to the Wizengamot that would create a curfew and protect muggleborns more than moving freely will. Elections will continue as planned, with the vote currently scheduled for mid-April.

Reaction is split in the wizarding world and the more liberal side begin to search for a candidate they believe can win against Malfoy in the Ministerial elections.

JANUARY 29, 1979 | THE NEW MOON

Late at night on January 29, dark marks burn.

The Death Eaters are called to Lord Voldemort’s side at Stonehenge and OCTAVIUS BURKE is instructed to bring the children that have been in his care for months. They appear to be well fed and in good spirits, though that is only because they’ve no idea what’s coming.

The Dark Lord’s plan is slowly revealed as the Death Eaters listen in rapt attention. Each child will be evaluated and sacrificed in ascending order of magical power. After the last sacrifice, Lord Voldemort will perform a ritual with their blood before absorbing all of the power, which is magnified due to the lunar cycle. Tonight, the first new moon of the year, is the perfect opportunity.

Lord Voldemort uses his wand on each child, testing their individual magical capacity with a spell long hidden in dark arts texts. Each child is placed at a certain point of a pentagram laid in the center of the Stonehenge. What he finds near the end, however, is disconcerting.

There is not enough magical power to complete the ritual, due to the younger ages of a couple of children. Though the children were tested upon their kidnappings, they have not increased their magical capacity as quickly as Lord Voldemort had hoped and he is unwilling to wait much longer to complete the ritual.

He must find a substitute. And quickly.

It is a surprise to all in attendance when he announces that a Death Eater will need to be sacrificed to ensure the full capacity of the dark ritual is met. As REGULUS BLACK is the youngest, he is chosen for the opportunity. Though family is heralded as greater than all by most purebloods, the Death Eaters in attendance say nothing, merely watch as the Dark Lord executes each child in succession, his wand opening their throats as OCTAVIUS follows behind him, collecting drops of blood in a silver chalice.

He pauses for a moment at Regulus, acknowledging his regret at the wasted potential under his breath before Regulus, too, slumps to the ground.

At the moment the moon changes, Lord Voldemort lifts the chalice to his lips and absorbs all of the power of the children and Regulus, a light flashing around the pentagam as it is completed.

Regulus’ body is given to CHARLES AVERY & RICHARD SELWYN to dispose of. CHARLES & RICHARD implicate the Order for the death, leaving the body on the steps of Gringotts where it is found by the goblins in the early light of morning.

On January 30, the wizarding world wakes up to the shocking death of a pureblood scion. Though pureblood society is rattled, its members soldier on and all anyone can speak of at events if the unfortunate death of a young boy with such potential.

The newspapers print little else for weeks and even the most liberal of wizards are heard speaking ill of the vigilantes who dared to murder an innocent.

Regulus’ funeral is held on February 5, though it is closed except to family and close associates.

DECEMBER 17, 1978

In Magical Britain, talk of politics is at an all-time high, making it rather difficult for many to enjoy the holiday season. While Lord Voldemort has not attacked in recent weeks, the country seems on the precipice of something its citizens can’t quite define.

Having a Death Eater in power makes things go smoother for the purebloods and though he cannot enact many reforms just yet, Abraxas Malfoy wastes no time using what power he has to help his chosen side move ahead. Acting off of a tip from a Death Eater sympathizer, the interim Minister of Magic Malfoy orders a search of the Weasley home in Devon, though he [along with much of the country] does not expect much to come from it. Still, he expects it to embarrass the Weasley family, which he is always happy to do.

It is surprising to the citizens of magical Britain when the aurors do not return empty-handed.

On December 17, the Daily Prophet announces that Richard Selwyn has been recovered and cleared of all charges by the Ministry of Magic. He is given a handsome reparations package for his false imprisonment in Azkaban. Meanwhile, Arthur Weasley is brought in for questioning as to how a young pureblood heir came to be imprisoned in his basement. Given the closeness between the Prewett and Weasley families, it is not difficult for the papers to make a connection with Percival Prewett’s death and the Weasleys, beloved for their open-mindedness, learn what it is like to be shunned by those they are trying to help.

DECEMBER 1978

The aftermath is impressive.

With several dead bodies, rogue aurors, and Richard Selwyn’s disappearance from a heavily fortified prison, the British magical government begins to unravel. The Daily Prophet attempts to support the current administration and adheres to the media blackout on the story of the drugging at the McKinnon party. But word of the incident spreads and after the Quibbler breaks the story, the Daily Prophet soon begins to shift its loyalties and abandons the sinking ship that is the Ministry of Magic. As it nears Christmas, articles are run daily about the ineptness of the current magical administration and there are few who support the current Minister.

It is only a matter of time until the Minister of Magic will step down, but in the days immediately following the skirmish at Azkaban and the McKinnon drugging, he remains content to stay hidden in his home or at the Ministry, intentionally oblivious to the witches and wizards [purebloods & muggleborns alike] calling for his immediate resignation.

An emergency session of the Wizengamot is held and at the end of it, Albus Dumbledore calls for a vote of no confidence against the current Minister of Magic. The votes are nearly unanimous and after a rousing argument on the Wizengamot floor, Abraxas Malfoy is named interim Minister of Magic until an election can be held after the first of the year. He promises to run in the official election and several other candidates throw their hats into the ring. One of them is Cornelius Fudge, who spends the majority of his free time cajoling Albus Dumbledore to back his campaign.

Aurors continue searching for Richard Selwyn, but privately believe that he has been taken by the Order of the Phoenix or murdered by Lord Voldemort. The Death Eaters, angry at the failed mission, become more vicious and in preparation for the holiday season, many begin to attack muggle villages in celebration, taking muggle children who have shown any bit of magic.

The missing muggleborn children are still kept by Octavius Burke and he is told to prepare them for a ritual at the New Year, though few are truly aware of Lord Voldemort’s intentions. While some are wary, they keep quiet in fear of his wrath. 

Through all of this upheaval, the pureblood way of life continues on. With the Christmas holiday approaching, there are parties and balls, but also an undercurrent of hope, that this new election might finally change things in their favor.

September 1978

There has been little progress in the search for Percival Prewett. Most of the pureblood elite know the truth - that his body was found on the shore of a Black family summer home property. But even though they may argue amongst themselves, when it comes to others, they are united as one.

A wallet with identification and a strange looking stick washes up on a shore leagues away from where Percival went missing and is found by a muggle child searching for seashells. A squib working in Muggle law enforcement recognizes the Ministry seal on the identification papers and contacts the Ministry of Magic. They swarm the site and with that comes the first hint that Percival did not simply vanish into thin air, that he did not decide to suddenly travel abroad with no communication to another living soul.

Since he was last seen at Sirius Black’s Lammas afterparty, the Ministry of Magic begins bringing people in for questioning, many of them suspected Death Eaters. They all tell the same story: that Percival left the party around midnight and while he seemed slightly intoxicated, none of them thought he was too much so that he would be unable to get home. They say nothing more and pretend to remain fuzzy about the details, not wanting to arouse suspicion.

But arousing suspicion comes anyway.

The impenetrable wall of pureblood loyalty is too much for the Ministry of Magic and even the largest donations from upstanding families are rejected as the government must be seen as doing something by the public. Many more are brought in for questioning and the government begins to apply pressure that the lightest of wizards would find untoward.

Richard Selwyn has always been good at slipping out of trouble but he overplays his hand when brought in for questioning. The interrogator insinuates that Violet Wilkes will be brought in next and Richard sees red. His anger, coupled with his clipped answers, lead the Ministry of Magic to believe he has something to hide. [And he does, though it’s not what they think.] While his dark mark is, thankfully, hidden, he is arrested and taken into custody before eventually being remanded to Azkaban pending his trial.

Richard’s arrest on September 3  is the first time that the Ministry is unable to be bribed and many purebloods feel that their world has shifted on its axis. We can trust no one but ourselves becomes a common phrase whispered in ballrooms and at tea. Even the more liberal purebloods feel the heat, and friendships with muggleborns and halfbloods are put on hold as segregation in the wizarding world grows stronger.

As pureblood elitism slowly falls out of favor, those purebloods in the Wizengamot begin to plan a coup, with the eventual goal being to oust the Minister of Magic in favor of someone who will look the other way as laws are passed to slowly erode at the laws of muggleborns.

The Daily Prophet; August 5

Breaking News

Percival Prewett has been missing since Lammas and though his family has remained rather quiet on the subject, sources detail that the family has been left rather confused by his sudden absence. He was last seen leaving Sirius Black’s Lammas afterparty quite intoxicated and sources indicate that he may have purchased a last-minute floo ticket to the continent. Anyone with news regarding Mr. Prewett’s whereabouts are encouraged to contact the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.

Minister of Magic elections have officially been announced and will take place this autumn. Exact dates will be forthcoming.

Social Event Commentary

The Dolohov Lammas party did not disappoint, with attention to detail at every turn. From the beer tasting to the bread baking, there were events for all guests and the food and drink were far from lacking. Some sources have indicated that the event doubled as a matchmaking service for the Dolohov heir, though he did not show interest in many. The bonfire ended the evening and though it was lovely, it was perhaps the only thing lacking. Nothing can truly compare to the bonfires of Beltane.

Though The Prophet did not receive an invite, sources indicate that the Black Afterparty was one for the books. Details are scarce, but the attendees have remained rather tight-lipped about the festivities and not one has indicated regret at attending.

Witch Weekly; August 6

Seen in Britain:

Sirius Black: seen paying a large amount of attention to Hazel Fawley. Though details on his party were scarce, witnesses had no trouble recounting the attentions he paid her. Picking up where he left off, perhaps?

Amycus Carrow: seen engaging Brigid Macmillan in conversation at the Lammas bonfire. Reports indicate that she did not appear to dislike his interest.

Violet Wilkes: seen singularly giving her attention to a besotted Richard Selwyn. WW has to wonder if they will become more interesting anytime soon for it’s getting rather boring watching them.

Briar Avery: seen in an argument with her brother, Charles Avery, at the Dolohov Lammas Party. Witnesses did not hear the content, but revealed that both of the siblings marched off in a huff.

Bellatrix Lestrange: seen arguing with Lucius Malfoy at the Dolohov Lammas Party. Witnesses recall her reaching for her wand on at least one occasion.

Coraline Parkinson: seen laughing rather raucously with Violet Wilkes & Briar Avery. It looks as if this group of friends is back on.

Ariadne Greengrass: seen with Tristan Nott throughout the day at Lammas. Witnesses reported the two appeared to be flirting and wondered if an announcement would be made soon.

Octavius Burke: seen deep in conversation with Violet Wilkes at the Lammas bonfire. We wonder if the conversation is as boring as we imagine it would be.

Ava Nott: seen enjoying herself at Sirius Black’s afterparty. Noticeably absent from her side at this event: Octavius Burke.

Maida Flint: seen looking rather bored as she conversed with Octavius Burke at the Dolohov Lammas party. She was later overheard to decry the event as boring.

Fletcher Travers: seen looking quite smug while in conversation with Alecto Carrow. She, on the other hand, did not appear to be nearly so pleased.

Henry Sayre: seen glancing at Emerson Yaxley during Lammas celebrations. Witnesses indicate that his gaze made them feel increasingly uncomfortable.

Brigid Macmillan: seen in the company of Narcissa Black at Sirius Black’s afterparty. Witnesses recall the two young women reaching quite an intoxicated state.

Regulus Black: though notably absent from the Dolohov Lammas party, he was overheard having a discussion with his brother at the afterparty when the elder Black had opened a second bottle of firewhiskey.

Noticeably absent from Lammas events: Isla Rosier.

Rita Skeeter’s Blind Items

This young man was seen engaging in some nefarious activities during the Black afterparty and went missing around the same time as young Percival Prewett. Rather than a disappearing act, we must wonder if there was a liaison between the two.

After arguing at the last major party, this couple seemed no closer to reconciling than before. Pity, as we were rather rooting for them.

A Surprise Invitation Upsets the Status Quo

On July 20, Arcturus Black holds a formal party, though the invitation sent out the previous week says little about what it is for. The ballroom of the sprawling Black Estate is nearly filled to capacity and even Orion Black, Arcturus’ eldest son, has little idea what his father has prepared.

It is not until well into the evening that Arcturus takes control of the room, promising an announcement that will change their society, an announcement that will excite some and anger others.

He is not lying.

It is so neat that many wonder if it is choreographed [it is] but no one says a word as Sirius Black enters the room with a charming smile, impeccably dressed and giving deference only to his father and grandfather. He looks every bit the pureblood society male his brother is and one could be forgiven for not realizing that he’d been gone for the past six years.

It is a time of celebration, Arcturus Black says as he announces that Sirius has been restored to his place as Black family heir, ignoring the look of loathing that his daughter-in-law forces upon him.

Sirius says little but as he begins to mingle with the rest of the guests, many have to wonder if everything has already changed.

This event has also been added to the society calendar.

The Daily Prophet; June 23

Breaking News

Several muggle families were murdered on Midsummer’s Eve. The Ministry of Magic has confirmed that while the Dark Mark was not seen over any home, there was at least one child missing from each and most of them were killed through magical means. The missing children had seemingly reported having magical abilities. With no suspects, the Ministry of Magic implores its citizens to speak up with any information or knowledge of suspicious activity.

Social Event Commentary

As is usually the case during Litha, there were simply so many events that covering them all would be rather superfluous. Listed below are some highlights.

It is notable to mention that the Selwyns’ largest celebration in years was well attended and rather exclusive. When juxtaposed against the inclusive Crouch celebration, it was quite evident that wizarding society has doubled down on tradition and extravagance. The Daily Prophet has no complaint.

Arcturus Black’s yearly speech did not disappoint and many noted that most attendees at the Black Family Midsummer Brunch did all they could to avoid falling asleep in their soup. Perhaps it is time for the Blacks to allow the younger generation to take charge as it has clearly worked for the Selwyns.

The Burke Dinner Party also deserves a mention, as it was the first large event that has been held since Octavius Burke took over as head of the family. Whether it was truly planned by Octavius or if it was a Nott celebration in all but name remains to be confirmed.

The Avery party, while going long into the night, was rumored to descend into debauchery as the elder generation left, though that rumor was not confirmed by any known attendees.

Witch Weekly; June 24

Seen in Britain:

Roman Delacour: seen attending Henry Sayre’s morning after Midsummer brunch. Witnesses were heard to remark that he was not, technically, invited.

Coraline Parkinson: seen looking rather bereft at Hazel Fawley’s Midsummer party. With an engagement on the horizon, one would assume that Miss Parkinson would be happier on a daily basis.

Violet Wilkes: seen having tea with Fletcher Travers in a Diagon Alley cafe. Stepping out on Richard Selwyn already?

Octavius Burke: seen looking rather besotted by his fiancee. It is worth mentioning that Ava Nott was the perfect society hostess at the Burke Dinner Party.

Amycus Carrow & Rabastan Lestrange: overheard arguing as if they were scorned lovers before leaving a Litha party together.

Rhiannon Crouch: heavily involved in conversation with Roman Delacour at the Crouch Midsumer’s Eve Party. WW has to wonder if she was the only person he graced with a smile that evening.

Emerson Yaxley: seen kissing Henry Sayre. Witnesses report Miss Yaxley ran away immediately after. Is Mr. Sayre that bad at snogging?

Bellatrix Lestrange: noted as perhaps the only one who appeared to take in the erstwhile speech of Arcturus Black during the Black Family brunch.

Richard Selwyn: overheard to have lamented the loss of a great deal of money in poker to Amycus Carrow.

Rodolphus Lestrange: seen in the company of Maida Flint looking decidedly more than a little friendly. What would his wife say?

Ariadne Greengrass: seen talking animatedly with Hazel Fawley at the latter’s party to the point that one has to wonder about her state of intoxication.

Lucius Malfoy and Narcissa Black: seemed strained during the Black Family Midsummer brunch, missing the loving glances we are used to seeing.

Tristan Nott: seen giving lustful glances to both Bellatrix Lestrange and Ariadne Greengrass. Does he think he can have them both? Or, to be more specific, could he handle them both?

Rosalind Selwyn: seen dancing with Charles Avery at the latter’s party before walking off in a huff. Witnesses noted that words unfit for print were mentioned.

Isla Rosier: overheard to be arguing with her brother, Evan Rosier, at the Black Family’s Midsummer Brunch. About what, however, is anyone’s guess.

Rita Skeeter’s Blind Items

This man was noted giving his sister-in-law adoring gazes during multiple Litha events to the point that it made even this reported uncomfortable.

Overheard arguing, this couple may not be headed toward marriage after all. One is unsure of what to expect given that he was already known to have a wandering eye.

The Daily Prophet; June 1

Breaking News

The Dark Mark was seen flying over Sussex; a Ministry of Magic investigation confirmed the death of a family of muggles. The youngest child, who had seemingly reported magical abilities, is still missing.

The Daily Prophet can confirm that Rodolphus Lestrange was seen punching his younger brother outside of The Leaky Cauldron. When asked for more information, the Lestrange family declined to comment.

Social Event Commentary

The Nott/Burke engagement party, held in the Nott gardens, did not disappoint. From the ever-moving magical maze to the delightful entertainment, the evening was seemingly a smashing success. Witnesses to a conversation between the elder Nott and the young Miss Greengrass lead the Prophet to believe that perhaps it will not be the first engagement party held at the Nott Estate this year. Notable mention: Narcissa Black is still missing a bauble on a very particular finger.

The St. Mungo’s Gala was nearly as tedious as it always is, though donors seemed pleased to be invited to the exclusive event. The Prophet has to wonder, however, if St. Mungo’s might not need such donations if it did not throw such a lavish event.

The Wilkes’ annual Garden Party was held at the Wilkes estate in Yorkshire. Experts from the British Wizarding Horticultural Society acknowledged being impressed by the size of the blooms but even more so by the size of the canapes. The Wilkes’ only daughter, Violet, was missing for much of the event; friends of the family noted that her absence was disappointing for many of the eligible young bachelors attending. Notably absent: Bellatrix Lestrange.

Witch Weekly; May 31

Seen in Britain:

Coraline Parkinson & Rabastan Lestrange: yet again, the couple attended an event together. Though, if one were watching them as the Nott/Burke engagement party, one may have noticed a distinct lack of attachment.

Violet Wilkes & Richard Selwyn: the better question is where haven’t they been seen? After the two were seen traveling to Spain [WW wonders if there was even a chaperone?] and attending several events together, one would be forgiven for asking if an announcement would be made by the end of the season.

Hazel Fawley & Rabastan Lestrange: the day after he was seen with Miss Parkinson, the former pulled the latter away at the St. Mungo’s gala and engaged him in a conversation. Has Miss Fawley ensnared the younger Lestrange away from Miss Parkinson?

Rosalind Selwyn: overheard discussing broken betrothals. Given her friendship with Narcissa Black, could she be planning something similar?

Lucius Malfoy & Coraline Parkinson: the two were seen arguing in a robe shop in Diagon Alley. Witnesses reported loud tones and insults unfit for print from both parties.

Henry Sayre & Emerson Yaxley: upon the latter’s return from Belize, witnesses reported a hug that was not entirely proper. Perhaps their friendship is not as platonic as they would have the public believe.

Bellatrix Lestrange & Charles Avery: these two were seen having a rather pleasant conversation at the Nott/Burke engagement party. One has to wonder just what these two have to discuss other than the obvious.

Hazel Fawley & Narcissa Black: with smiles on their faces, it appears that a new friendship has been struck.
