I’m pretty sure it’s someone in one of my cooking classes since that was the last time I’d had it before it went missing. I honestly have no idea why, maybe she was dumb enough to think she could get away with it.

“Probably.” Maggie said quietly. “I would need a lot of money for a start up.” She said blushing. “I have to scrape together enough for just me, so it’s probably out of the question.” She said taking another sip of her latte. “But I’ll teach you to cook anytime. Honestly, I know a bunch of recipes. You’ll just have to tell me what your boyfriend likes and I can teach you.”

Maggie listened intently, her eye growing saucersize. “Wow.” She said in awe. “Sounds like you had an awesome childhood.” She said with a bright and honest smile. “And it sounds like you’re still having an awesome life. That’s great.”

Aiden contemplated for a moment, a thoughtful look on his face as he formed a idea in his head. “You know what? What if I make a deal with you? Noah and his little partner, Colette hold weekly book get togethers at the store and there’s a average of a least twelve to fifteen people. We usually hire one of the bakeries and give them a budget of seventy dollars to make things. What if we hired you to make tamales? It would be something different from having cakes and such - if you’re interested that is. And Noah? Oh Noah loves anything really, the one great thing about him is he’s not picky, he appreciates everything and is always willing to give things a shot.”

“My childhood was fun, I can say that, we never lived the glamour lifestyle that everyone expected. My mom didn’t work much but my dad did, he’d travel a lot but we had a small house and they pretty much raised me like any other child. It was nice. I am having an awesome life, I’m doing what I love and I surround myself with people that make me happy.”

Ouch you should definitely use the highest sunscreen they make. Oh just so busy with work, I am a stockbroker so mostly indoors from early morning until sunset.

Oh, I do, trust me, I do. It’s the damn Irish and German blood in my veins, makes the sun hate me. A stock broker, well that’s a interesting career that I haven’t come across. Doesn’t that get a bit boring?

You know I agree with you I think we are lucky because of the Gulf bringing us such cool ocean breezes. So far I am lucky about burning I tend to tan but of course I don’t get to get much sun.

That is probably true and the sun isn’t nearly as hot on this side of the world. I don’t tan, I burn. Lobster red. Why don’t you get much sun?

Some people don’t know the meaning of hot, I have traveled quite a bit and I love the weather here in New Orleans.

The weather here is a lot nicer than it is in Los Angeles, I think that city is just meant to burn your skin to a crisp and make you melt on a sidewalk.

Taking a tentative bite of the danish, Maggie had to fight back a moan. “Well thanks again for it.” She said softly as she took another sip of her drink. “Yeah there are a few things of hers that I made. My mom wrote down all of her recipes before she was killed so I have a bunch of them.” She said with a small smile. “I try to save up every year for Easter or Christmas to make tamales, even if it is just for me.” She said shyly.

Maggie gave Aiden a soft smile. “Thanks for coming out with me, even if I tend to be really crappy company.” She said with a self deprecating smile. She took another sip of her latte and leaned back against the chair. “So, anything I should know about you?”

“You know some people make a killing selling tamales around here? There’s this little street vender that sells them like crazy. I think he may spice things up a bit to fit in with the culture here, there’s a thought though. You could always make a huge batch and sell them for a dollar a piece. Next time you make them, I want to help if you’ll let me. I may be a disaster at doing it but I sort of want to learn to cook a bit better for my boyfriend. There’s only so much take out we can take and while I know a little, I really need to expand my horizons.”

“Well, you haven’t been horrible company just yet, minus almost offending me by not taking the latte,” he gave a small smile, letting her know that he was merely joking. “Me? Let’s see, my father was a music composer and my mother is an actress. I grew up in Los Angeles and moved to New York to try and get onto Broadway to do hair and makeup but my father died and I moved down here to be with my mother.” Taking a deep breath, he laughed and shrugged. “Now I just do people’s hair and makeup down here, I help with a burlesque group that performs at Saints and Sinners and my friends. And that, is me in a nutshell.”

Twisting her fingers, Maggie gave Aiden a small smile. “I don’t really remember a lot. My parents have shown me pictures, that’s all.” She said honestly. “I do remember my aubela’s cooking though.” She said with a smile. “She makes amazing arroz y frijoles, which is rice and beans. And cochinita pibil, which is pit pork.” She shrugged and felt a flush cover her cheeks when he mentioned that the tea and danish wasn’t going to break his wallet.

“I know…but we just met.” She mumbled. She didn’t add that it would break her wallet. Shaking her head emphatically, she reached for the tea. “No, that’s fine.” She said honestly. “Cheese sounds great.” Taking a sip of the latte, she licked her lips with a soft smile.

“Pit pork, that I’ve never had that, but it sounds amazing. I ate rice and beans a lot back home.” He did feel a little bad that she didn’t really remember her grandmother, he could relate though, he’d never even met his since his father’s parents had been dead since his father was a child and his mothers side died when Aiden was two.

“There’s nothing wrong with showing kindness when you first meet someone. I have a feeling we’ll get along just fine from here on out. We’ll just have to get out sometimes together and have some fun.” He gave a firm nod of his head. Aiden had money, but he never flaunted it in front of anyone’s face. “Good, I think the raspberry is too sweet anyway. Wrinkling his nose, he grinned. “Do you know how to make anything that your grandmother made?”

Who ever said 70 degrees is too cool for the pool?

No idea, probably someone who doesn’t know what hot is?

“Hopefully.” Maggie said softly. “I’ve seen pictures, and it’s beautiful. It’s up in the mountains in Chiapas. They mostly speak Tzocal, which is an indigenous language, but it’s….” She exhaled softly. “It’s just beautiful. I don’t have words to describe how beautiful it is. It’s a few hours from one of the main cities San Cristobal de la Casas.” She started to ramble, but stopped herself and blushed. “Sorry.”

When he ordered the lattes and the danishes she had to stop herself from drooling. She had been living off of rice, beans and chicken stock with some vegetables here and there. “Y…You really don’t have to.” She said swallowing hard. “But…it sounds amazing.”

“It sounds like you’d really appreciate it,” he only smiled when she stopped herself, giving a small shrug. “Please, feel free to carry on, it’s interesting to hear about other places that I, myself, have never been to. I think that perhaps when I’m older and better off than I am right now with my own money, I might just travel for a bit.”

He waved a hand dismissively. “It’s not like this is going to break my wallet, if we had met at a five star restaurant, it would be a different story. But really, it’s not a problem. I feel rude eating in front of someone when they’re not.” Smiling, he took some money from his wallet and set it down for the teas and danish as they were brought over. “I do hope you like cheese danish? We could always get a raspberry or a apple if you’d prefer.”

“We learned together. When I learned to read so did they.” She shrugged and picked at her nails. “I’d probably have to fly down there. My parents grew up in Chiapas, it borders Guatemala. It’s pretty poor.” She said quietly. “And it’s expensive to get there.” She sighed heavily but gave Aiden a small smile. “Maybe when I’m some big shot human rights lawyer.” She said quietly.

Nodding, Maggie twisted her hands. “Yeah, I’ve applied for next year. I just need to keep my GPA up, which is hard enough when you’re not living next to a drug dealer.” She said trying to make light of the situation. At his offer, Maggie bit her lip as her stomach growled. Maybe the milk in the latte would keep her going tonight.

“There you go, positive thinking! And if anything, when you finally get a job, you can just put a little bit in savings and save enough up to go. I think you deserve it. I’ve never been down there, I’ve been overseas when I was younger though, my mother was an actress so she had a lot of small parts in movies but I’ve never been to Mexico or Chile, which are two of the places I want to go to the most.”

He did laugh at her attempt to make things lighter, raising his hand and nodding the waitress over, ordering two more chai teas and two cheese danish. “I don’t know about you? But I’m starving.” He grumbled a bit because it would be like him to skip breakfast because he’d got caught up in doing something else. “That’s good that you’re already in the running, I hope you get it, sounds like the career path you want to go is a good one.”

“My parents really couldn’t speak much English when they came to the country, so we taught them English when we went to school.” She said softly. “And my abuela, grandma, she still lives in Mexico, she doesn’t speak a word of English.” She said quietly. “I haven’t seen her since I was 5 and we went down there…and then we lost touch when I went into Foster Care.” She shrugged. “But I still try to speak Spanish when I can.”

Listening, Maggie gave him a small smile. “I guess not. I just feel behind, and it sucks because I can’t study as much as everyone else. I’m trying for a scholarship, but I work helping kids at the Boys and Girls Club and then I waitress so I don’t have much time.” She shook her head. “N-No, no thanks. I….I don’t get paid until next week.”

“That’s sweet, I think it’s nice when a child can teach the parent something.” Hearing about her grandmother, the blonde male frowned. “I’m sorry, that must be hard. But maybe when you get settled and everything, you can try to find her?”

“Understandable, but as ar as the scholarship? I know there’s one that’s for Louisiana that helps with kids that were in the system, it’s worth a shot to try and find out if you qualify for that - which obviously you do.” Giving a chuckle, he shook his head. “You don’t have to pay me back Maggie, consider it me buying you a cup in return for meeting up, It’s what friends, or potential friends do.”

“Coffee with milk.” She said softly. “My parents were Mexican.” She said using the past tense. “So we grew up using a mix of Spanish and English at home.” She shrugged and rewarded his comment with a shy half smile. “Yeah, it’s frustrating to say the least to get my work done with all that noise.”

Sipping her tea, Maggie looked down. “It’s not that big of a deal.” She admitted quietly. “Trust me, you probably have more important things to worry about.” Stirring the tepid water, she looked up at Aiden. “My first year. I had to save money last year so I could go and get out of the shelter and stuff so I’m a year behind…but I’m there.”

“Ahh, I knew leche was milk, but wasn’t sure what the rest of it meant,” he gave a short laugh and cleared his throat. “I think it’s good that you learned both instead of just one, some families of Spanish decent these days only teach their children English. But you just manage, I remember getting work done sometimes back home was pure hell.”

“I worry about everything, it’s my nature. I’m like the father rooster of all my friends,” snickering, remembering a time when things were hectic and all of his friends got annoyed with him because he kept trying to help them all. “I don’t think anyone can be a year behind when it comes to college, that’s something you can take your own time deciding, unlike high school. Do you want a chai latte, Maggie? I can get you one, they know me here too, I usually get things with a discount.”

“Hmmm?” Maggie looked down at her tea and shrugged. “Yeah, we’ve always drank lots of tea. And cafe con leche.” She took another sip of her tea. It was also the cheapest drink on the menu she thought but kept that information to herself. “Yeah, lots of guys in my neighbourhood drink those crappy energy drinks. They’ll mix them with vodka which means then we have lots of drunk guys staying up all night.”

Nodding, she gave him a small smile. “Well I’m happy to help then.” She said, giving a shaky smile. She brushed her hair out of her face and she shook her head. “No, I’m fine.” She lied. “Just got some stuff on my mind.”

“I have no idea what cafe con leche is, I remember hearing the name in Los Angeles but I don’t remember what it means.” He gave laugh because yes, he took three years of Spanish in high school but he’ll be damned if he can remember a thing about it. “Oh nothing better than a drunk person on a energy drink. I think they’re the worst.”

“Hmm, alright, if you need to rant though, I hear that I’m a pretty good listener.” Which was the truth, God only knows how many times he’s listened to Colette rant. Or cry. But mostly rant lately “How long have you been in college?”
