...I'm sorry, what?
Yeah, Mr Curvy Bone Joe, we’ve all seen him
Okay having snooped in the terrafirmacraft tag I don’t feel too bad for cross posting vintage story there, so I’m going to blabber on about TFC now & crosspost THIS to the vintage story tag too.
I originally got into TFC around when it was in its really early stages. Like stone pickaxes, zinc/tin/bismuth tools (my first tool was a zinc saw). I want to say it was for Minecraft 1.2.5(?, it was 1.2.X I think). I played mostly single player, did a small amount of servers over the years, including trying to make my own “Terrafirmapunk” style packs and the like. I played TFC all the way until it’s 1.7.10 days when the team split/left, and TFC was split into TFC+, TFC TNG, & TFC2. I followed the development of TFC 2 until that kinda died, and TFC TNG lost me the moment they redid the food system (I know several of the TFC versions that split wanted to ditch the ounces system, but I really liked that system). After kinda finding myself heartbroken over how the versions porting to 1.12 changed terrain generation, trees, & food, I resolved to sticking with 1.7.10 on TFC Classic. After a bit TFC+ really caught my attention, and I swapped to that, and I will say, I think it’s my preferred version of TFC, as I love the temperature system, the continent system for crops/animals, the clothing system, and the slings (I’d been wanting to throw rocks for ages). I also know one of my friends loved the sewing system (which was great for me, I was terrible at it, but amazing at smithing, so I usually smithed all our gear, and had them sew).
I do admit sometimes the newer TFC versions do interest me, but it’s a hard pill to swallow to give up the… unique… character the 1.7.10 versions had.
It’s really interesting though reading some of the stuff people here talk about with TFC since most of them are talking about 1.12+ versions, and it definitely throws me off when they talk about “no monsters at night” because… that was a change made after I split. My TFC days were spent brutally fighting off things like Spiders for silk, or cowering from the skeletons/wither skeletons, sometimes even during the daytime (I once saw a wither skeleton on the surface with FULL WROUGHT IRON gear while I was in my first FALL. My best equipment was all bismuth bronze and leather armor). It’s definitely something I’d miss, because it felt good getting your first mace because of stuff like that, or the achievement of killing your first enderman. I had pretty much every monster’s damage types memorized & knew which monsters you could handle at which ages.
I’d also like to note despite all the time I played, while I usually always got to steel, I think I only got to black steel once. (Gabbro my beloathed. Literally only hit black steel the one time I rerolled my world gen until I STARTED in a Gabbro region)
I’ve found Vintage Story scratches that same kinda itch & I’ve been hoping I can convince my friends to play it, since getting people to play modded Minecraft is like pulling teeth sometimes, and other times everyone wants to add their own 1-3 mods that are all over the place and not cohesive
Been playing a lot of Vintage Story both alone and on servers. I’ve played 3 separate worlds at this point, and I’ve gotten really good at finding meteoric iron in particular. On a server with around 4-5 players all settling in one little village, I’ve apparently hit the most meteoric iron out of any of them (having found roughly 5 nodes in a single season), on my solo I think I’ve located around a dozen or two nodes before my first January, and on another server I think I’ve found like a dozen again (I’d have to check all the waypoints I’ve been marking on them). All this to say… How tf are people finding high fertility soil? Like I’ve found probably enough meteoric iron for a suit of plate on each of these worlds (and believe me, I’m tempted to craft some meteoric armor just because it’s rare), but I’ve found High fertility soil once…
Like does anyone have any tips for finding it besides “look at hills/mountains”. I’m running vanilla atm and don’t want “High fertility soil gives off particles” or anything like that. I’m generally pretty good at finding things (Lime stones has been a recurring problem, but I have it on all three now, and bauxite on two)
Vintage Story is truly one of the games of all time and has a level of attention to detail that I aspire to one day reach, and nothing exemplifies that more than the bugs. There are 169 unique butterfly models in the game! They have unique spawning conditions depending on world height and rain frequency and temperature, and a unique pin you can wear for every single one! You don't have to interact with them at all if you don't want to! This is something someone did out of true passion!
And then you turn to the bees (something you need to interact with if you want to make meaningful progression) and their m. Their models are. Their models a
This is so funny, and I love both
Here's how you make noai.duckduckgo.com your default search engine so you don't have to toggle the filter on every time you do a search:
1) Make sure your Firefox is up to date.
2a) Go to the website and right click in the search field and select 'Add Search Engine' and confirm with 'Add Engine':
OR!
2b) Go into Firefox's settings and under Search, scroll down until you find the option to manually add a search engine:
And the URL you'll want to enter is https://noai.duckduckgo.com/?t=h_&q=%s
3) Either way, you will now have to scroll to the top of your Search settings in Firefox and then change your Default Search Engine to the one you just added.
As for other browsers... I don't have a clue, fuck Chrome in particular.
May you never happen upon an ugly ass AI slop baby animal again.
I appreciate you so much

how to maximize pollution from coal power in factorio. straight burning coal or liquifying it to solid fuel to burn? we've been arguing and crunching numbers for a while
I'd like to hear the "straight burn coal" side of the argument because to me, there simply is no argument to be had.
I'm not going to take into account the drills pollution because that depends on your set up and your mining productivity level.
Now let's talk numbers, one boiler consumes 27 coal per minute. That's it, you mine, you burn, only polluting from the drills and the steam engines.
However, you can liquefy the coal into heavy oil, light oil, and gas. Turn the gas into solid fuel, then use the light oil to turn that into rocket fuel. Burn that at a rate of 1.08 fuel/min, and you've already added 3.5 units of pollution per minute thanks to those extra machines, using a little less coal even. The downside here is that some of that steam the boilers generate won't pollute by being consumed by the engines because it'll need to be rerouted to the refineries to liquefy the coal.
Now if you have the dlc you can bump that to a nice 4 pollution per unit of fuel burnt per minute, still using the original coal liquefaction (not the Simple one from Vulcanus). You'll simply need to drop calcite from orbit, use that to melt iron into plates directly, use the plates to make acid, then neutralize the acid with the remaining calcite to generate the steam you'll need for the coal liquefaction. It even requires more coal, thus generating more pollution from mining, and it saves on steam that you would've sent to the refining. Now you can send all the steam from the boilers to engines to generate more power and more pollution!
Hope that helps, happy factory growing.
I'm not going to take into account the drills pollution because that depends on your set up and your mining productivity level.
That's a significant portion of the pollution, though. At a 50% mining bonus, producing 1.8MW needs 1.33 burner miners to supply both the boiler and themselves, for a total of 46 pollution per minute (30+16). Normal (non-DLC) coal liquefaction cuts the mining demand for 1.8MW net (~3.9k steam per minute gross) to ~0.83 burner drills and adds just under 0.08 boilers. The chemical processing adds less than 1.5 pollution per minute, and the total cost is about 43.8 ppm.
But if you continue to rocket fuel, 1.8MW net produces 48.16 ppm just considering mining and boiling, and generating 500° steam via acid neutralization and then consuming it in a steam engine (not a turbine) produces over 123 ppm just for the burner miners, plus 29.2 for the chemical processing.
For even more pollution-per-net-watt, stick with the acid neutralization and the steam engines, but mine the coal with electric miners and prod 2 modules: almost 34 miners, producing almost 340 ppm just by themselves. It produces 19.2 MW gross (62 MW if you used turbines like a sane person), but only 1.8 MW net after all the mining and liquefaction and cracking.
(YAFC won't calculate pollution directly, but it'll give you building counts and each building's pollution per minute value.)
Okay, but I need to add two things onto this discussion.
1. Acid Neutralization is a recipe locked to Vulcanus. You cannot use Acid Neutralization on Nauvis without modding the recipe, and therefore the pollution value of it is irrelevant as Vulcanus has no pollution. Likewise since they need it for power production on Nauvis, they can’t exactly ship over acid for power generation, and they can’t ship steam from Vulcanus either. Plus BOILERS are the big polluters for steam power
2. The rocket fuel numbers aren’t accounting for Space Age’s Rocket Fuel Productivity research, which would counteract your pollution gains. As research prod bonuses do not have side effects, it reduces the pollution over time
So with those noted in general it’ll probably be in their interest to either burn straight coal or burn rocket fuel & never research fuel productivity. In theory the worst is likely using rocket fuel for everything including the burner miners, since OP talks about using burner miners… god this is awful. On that note though, they may want to make sure smelting is electric with speed modules as well, as I believe that also increases pollution-per-item, as boilers have a 50% energy efficiency. Granted take this with a grain of salt because I’m not running the math on this, just estimating off trends I know on “maximizing power from coal”, and generally doing the inverse means you need more miners to fuel the same number of boilers. Likewise while heating towers have a big pollution per minute you need far, far less of them than you would boilers, and they end up being far less polluting if *throttled*. So I mean you could just slap down heating towers and incinerate as much fuel as you can make just to maximize the stuff you’re burning, with power generation just being a side effect. At that point researching productivity might help just by giving you more to burn
I can't believe home depot literally produced a wildly successful science fiction musical and we all just pretend it didn't happen. on one hand yes it had a boring white guy main character but like.... home depot just... Made it? And it had shit ton of box office sales? and no one even talks about this. this is like avatar (2009) all over again
OK so. After a lot of frantic googling I realized this was all a dream. home depot did not in fact produce a wildly successful science fiction musical. I was on allergy meds and took a nap and my brain simply prophesized this. slightly disappointed because I wanted to watch it.
