Maybe it's cos I'm from the UK and therefore extremely removed from the concept of guns in general but like. Reading how that woman pointed a gun at you??? When you explained yourself perfectly reasonably???? And were obviously not a threat??? Or even being rude????? Mad. Madness. What??? I would have yelled at her and probably got shot. Makes me very angry. Hope she has to make awkward small talk with you while you stare knowingly at her someday. Hope she feels shame :/
Haha I mean. I honestly have more sympathy for her than for the guys who sit on their porches and just randomly fire guns into the woods at anything that looks like an animal. Hiking in the USA can be... pointlessly dangerous.
US gun culture is so terrible.
People do that!? They just fire into the woods? What is happening in those states?
Last year our neighbors were “shooting coyotes” from their garage, firing into the strip of woods that separates our properties, pointing their guns toward our house.... almost more annoying than that was the godawful artificial rabbit screeching they’d play in the hopes of luring coyotes towards them.
Isn’t that... illegal? Or is that just “you can’t shoot towards roads” and it doesn’t apply towards other houses? Something seems iffy, I’d be looking into it because, like, all it takes is one bullet that doesn’t happen to hit a tree to... y’know.
Oh, almost certainly. But so is burning huge piles of tires and choking the neighborhood with toxic smoke. Nobody’s actually going to do anything about it, though. I’ve said before that rural living just means being in constant low-key war with your neighbors at all times.
Neighbors shooting guns into the clumps of trees and cornfields is so commonplace that I barely register it as background noise any longer.
I live within city limits. when my neighbor is upset he goes out on his porch and fires a rifle of some sort a few times. The police can’t do anything because we don’t have line of sight to his porch and nobody has seen the gun. I can safely say it is semi-auto rifle fire. Police do not care. I had a guy at my front door threatening me with all kinds of violence. Police didn’t show until after he left, police left trying not to laugh. Now I keep a functional sword by the door, almost pulled it on a census worker because she wasn’t in sight of the peephole in my door and she was pounding on the door.
I don’t call the cops anymore. That’s not tough guy posturing, that’s “They’re useless so why waste the time?”
I honestly can’t think of a situation in which I’d call the cops unless someone has been kidnapped, shot, or like... dying from some other injury or something that has to be legally registered. It would take them 15 or 20 minutes to get here in the first place and any crime they might conceivably be able to stop would be over and done with. The only shit they care about is stuff like “was someone hunting and then crossed your property line to retrieve a deer that they had shot and limped onto land you own”—and they will actually come down on other LEO for that. Otherwise it’s either a.) completely pointless unless you have an “in” or b.) makes everything worse.
And even if someone is shot/dying, my main goal in calling 911 is to get them help via ambulance, and not getting the culprit apprehended (that’s a secondary concern) and it just so happens that police/other emergency services have the same phone number.
(Graphic content mentions) I was once on the site of a serious vehicle crash with a person on the ground bleeding from the head. A police officer arrived on the scene first, and did nothing except wait with us for the ambulance to arrive. (It was not a hit-and-run or a tense situation, all involved parties and witnesses were cooperating)
So there was a person unresponsive, possibly dying, on the ground, and the officer did not attempt any kind of first aid or even involvement in the situation. A civilian was directing traffic. A civilian was on the ground with the injured person holding his hand and speaking to him. A civilian was making sure the man’s airway was clear. A civilian was checking on the passengers of the other vehicle. A civilian had already relayed the situation and location to dispatch. When the fire truck arrived, a civilian answered their questions before the officer did.
Officers may have their place in certain emergency events, but in the vast majority of emergencies, they aren’t my first priority to contact because of this. 95% of the time, they’re there for paperwork - to record what happened, and not to intervene.
Honestly it’s pretty much a game of fireworks or gunshots year round at apartment complexes. One time I heard gun shots go off while walking to my car and a woman started screaming for help. Called the police and they just flashed their lights in the direction before driving off...
I think I’m going to apply a bit more critical thinking when watching the news.
Someone threatened his princess and they are going to suffer.

Character A tilting Character B’s chin up to get a better look at their face and the evidence of the fight. A delicately thumbs away the streak of blood by B’s mouth, saying nothing as they examine it. After a brief pause, B’s heart skips a nervous beat as A looks them dead in the eyes. Their voice is quiet and tense, their anger barely restrained.

the purest form of serotonin is when a cat looks at u and u go like “what?” and it meows at u
like, that is a very unspecific response I still have no idea what you want but I applaud how adorably you meowed all the same, well done
This post led me to reminisce on the nature of cat’s meowing, and I have a funny story
I befriended a feral cat once who had spent her life in the forest without human interaction. I was worried about her because she had a paw damaged from an old injury and was emaciated but obviously nursing kittens that were hidden away somewhere. It took me weeks of putting out food and sitting across the yard every evening for her to trust me even a little and when she decided we were friends and she expected dinner every night she started coming to my door and trying to call for me in the evening, but she didn’t meow. Why would she? Cats only meow naturally as kittens when their vocal chords/ears aren’t fully developed, adult cats communicate with vocalizations that aren’t audible to humans. She probably tried making noises I couldn’t hear to call me but ended up sticking to the one I always responded to- a horrible yowling growl that she had made at me when we first encountered each other in the forest. Except once we were friends she would make this noise while purring and rubbing affectionately against a nearby tree or the porch railing (because she didn’t want to touch me yet). This understandably freaked my family members out but I was touched that she had taken the time to find a way to basically yell FUCK OFF in an affectionate way.
Fast forward to when she finally trusts me enough to bring her hidden kittens out of the forest to me, long story short I gained their trust and put them in this big pen, that I had previously used to keep chickens in, so they’d be safe and to keep her from having another litter. Except she was already secretly pregnant again! (Fix your pets, guys, they make SO many babies) and ended up having her new babies in this pen. I kept my distance, sitting on the outside once they were born until she seemed comfortable enough to let me come inside. The kittens were a bit wild, hissing viscously at me as soon as they opened their eyes, but they warmed up to me. There were four of them and soon they all wanted to be the center of attention during the twice daily play sessions. I’d be playing with one and another would meow insistently behind me and I’d immediately answer them and give them love, teaching them that humans could be friends that answer their needs- making them adoptable once they were weaned. Mama cat (Artie) would just watch me play with them, and I guess she was doing some thinking because one day when they were about a month old I was playing with them and one meowed behind me. I was confused because I hadn’t realized there was a kitten behind me and when I turned, there wasn’t. The only cat there was Artie looking at me really intensely. I turned back around to the kittens and I heard the meow again, I turned back to Artie and responded in the way I always did with the kittens “yes baby?” And she meowed again in an exact imitation of her kittens! After that she would.not.shut.up. It was like she had cracked some kind of code, meowing for attention and snacks and just to say hi. Her two older kittens, the ones she’d had in the forest, had never meowed at me either but started to once they saw how I responded to their mom. and I find it endlessly fascinating because before that it had never occurred to me that cats only meow at humans because they were taught by other cats to keep meowing past kittenhood because that’s the best way to get a human’s attention.
Imagine befriending some weird giant with the wrong number of legs that you met in the forest who seems nice enough but doesn’t seem to be able to hear you, until your friend explains that all they can understand is fuck off! And I’m a baby give me love!
you got...a w hole family...cat...cat family....thats the dream
This is like that post I made about the first cat who figured out the meowing thing. Like you’re some ancient Egyptian dude chillin’ by the grain storage and you see a wild cat at a distance and you’re like “Aw dope” because those little shits eat mice that gets into the grain. They’re very quiet animals, sometimes rumbling quietly, but that’s all, so you barley notice it’s approach. And then suddenly it just goes “MOW.”
I imagined a very deep voice for that first encounter
Sometimes you need to read a story with a sad ending and like all this push-back against “depressing” stories on tumblr lately has really started to become annoying to me.
Yes stories with happy endings have value, but not every story can have a happy ending. Not every story should have a happy ending. Sometimes even a story should have an extremely unsatisfying ending. Because that’s how art works.
Yeah, I deeply enjoy books with a bad/sad ending, it's really been exhausting seeing Tumblr posts against these kinds of endings. Just let me read what I want to read, and let the author write whatever ending they want to.
Saying that a bad/sad ending isn't something you enjoy or want is all good my duderinos but when you pretend they can't have artistic merit or be valued by others then sorry you kinda suck
Calling a story shitty or saying it has a cheap ending because it wasn’t happy is not okay. Stories end the way they’re supposed to end, and not all endings are happy ones
Authentic friendships between grown men and women are honestly still not written enough and and can I just say Beauregard and Fjord, and Caleb and Nott, all from Critical Role, are some of my favorite friendship duos of all time.

“I love it.”

Writing Tip: Don’t Be Afraid of Mixing Dialogue and Action
So I’ve been reading a lot of amateur writing lately, and I’ve noticed what seems to be a common problem: dialogue.
Tell me if this looks familiar. You start writing a conversation, only to look down and realize it reads like:
“I’m talking now,” he said.
“Yes, I noticed,” she said.
“I have nothing much to add to this conversation,” the third person said.
And it grates on your ears. So much ‘said.’ It looks awful! It sounds repetitive. So, naturally, you try to shake it up a bit:
“Is this any better?” He inquired.
“I’m not sure,” she mused.
“I definitely think so!” that other guy roared.
This is not an improvement. This is worse.
Now your dialogue is just as disjointed as it was before, but you have the added problem of a bunch of distracting dialogue verbs that can have an unintentionally comedic effect.
So here’s how you avoid it: You mix up the dialogue with description.
“Isn’t this better?” he asked, leaning forward in his seat. “Don’t you feel like we’re more grounded in reality?”
She nodded, looking down at her freshly manicured nails. “I don’t feel like a talking head anymore.”
“Right!” that annoying third guy added. “And now you can get some characterization crammed into the dialogue!”
The rules of dialogue punctuation are as follows:
Each speaker gets his/her own paragraph - when the speaker changes, you start a new paragraph.
Within the speaker’s own paragraph, you can include action, interior thoughts, description, etc.
You can interrupt dialogue in the middle to put in a “said” tag, and then write more dialogue from that same speaker.
You can put the “said” tag at the beginning or end of the sentence.
Once you’ve established which characters are talking, you don’t need a “said” tag every time they speak.
ETA: use a comma instead of a period at the end of a sentence of dialogue, and keep the ‘said’ tag in lower caps. If you end on a ? or !, the ‘said’ tag is still in lower case. (thanks, commenters who pointed this out!)
Some more examples:
“If you’re writing an incomplete thought,” he said, “you put a comma, then the quote mark, then the dialogue tag.”
“If the sentence ends, you put in a period.” She pointed at the previous sentence. “See? Complete sentences.”
“You can also replace the dialogue tag with action.” Extra guy yawned. “When you do, you use a period instead of a comma.”
So what do you do with this newfound power? I’m glad you asked.
You can provide description of the character and their surroundings in order to orient them in time and space while talking.
You can reveal characterization through body language and other nonverbal cues that will add more dimension to your dialogue.
You can add interior thoughts for your POV character between lines of dialogue - especially helpful when they’re not saying quite what they mean.
You can control pacing. Lines of dialogue interrupted by descriptions convey a slower-paced conversation. Lines delivered with just a “said” tag, or with no dialogue tag at all, convey a more rapid-fire conversation.
For example:
“We’ve been talking about dialogue for a while,” he said, shifting in his seat as though uncomfortable with sitting still.
“We sure have,” she agreed. She rose from her chair, stretching. “Shall we go, then?”
“I think we should.”
“Great. Let’s get out of here.”
By controlling the pacing, you can establish mood and help guide your reader along to understanding what it is that you’re doing.
I hope this helps you write better dialogue! If you have questions, don’t hesitate to drop me an ask :)

Reblogging for all my writers who are looking for ways to improve their writing.
I’m going to add on to this with the difference between “__” and ‘__’ as I’ve seen a particular trend with Wattpad user/fanfiction writers. “__” are used for quoting the character speaking. ‘__’ are used for when a character is quoting another character.
“Did you hear what she said to me?” He paced back and forth, waving his hands around in erratic circles. “That bitch said ‘writing fanfiction doesn’t count as real writing.’ Bullshit. I work just as hard as any other writer!”
