“The scent of Northshore” project is created to honour the vegetation vital to Aboriginal people used to live in “Yerrol” or Northshore Hamilton area in the past. The project will be a craft workshop offering making candles, soap bars, and fragrance with a unique scents range comprising the odour of Yerrol’s important spices, namely vines, palms, cedars, pines, orchids and figs. The workshop will not merely be a spot for entertainment and relaxation as it is also a place where visitors can be educated about the historical knowledge relating to the Aboriginal community.

The scent of Northshore project is considered environmentally friendly for the following reasons. First, all of the material used for the workshop will be eco-friendly and plant-based, such as recycled paper boxes, jars, or natural colour dyes. Moreover, old flower petals, leaves, and fruit peel will be collected then dehydrated to make essential oils or used to decorate craft. Last but not least, leftover candle wax or soap base can also be reused without any decrease in quality, which is relatively economically friendly.

The cost of building and hosting a candle making workshop can vary based on factors such as rent, materials, workshop’s capacity, etc. However, here is a general breakdown of possible expense for craft creating studio with a capacity of 20 people:

Venue: the average cost of renting in Brisbane currently is $400 per week with a minimum 6 month contract, which makes the renting fee approximately $10000 for half a year.

Materials: including wax, wicks, fragrance oils, dyes, containers, and other supplies for candles, soap bars, and essential oils. The estimated cost is around $550 - $600.

Tools and equipment: consisting of tables and chairs, melting pots, thermometers, pouring pitchers, stirring sticks, scales, moulds, etc. The cost of tools for 20 participants ranges from $200 to $300.

Decoration: around $150

Instruction and demonstration: wage of workshop conductors is roughly $25000 for 6 months, and can vary according to experience and expertise.

Staff’s wages: including wage for assistants, social media manager, etc., which can account for about $30000 per 6 months in total.

Overall, the estimated budget for a candle making workshop for a six month period could be around $60000 to $65000, which still falls within the client’s budget.

The scent of Northshore project is believed to be able to encourage revisitation and stable engagement due to its dynamic and flexibility. The dynamic lies in the content presented to the audience. More specifically, it allows customers to work as they build their arts and crafts; it allows people to broaden their knowledge with Northshore’s interesting historical stories and facts; and it allows people to socialise, make friends, or temporarily escape from the hustle and bustle of life. When it comes to flexibility, the workshop can be altered in regard to different holidays, festivals, and events. For instance, the workshop can follow an Olympic theme by presenting classes for making Olympic-related candles, soap, or essential oils in celebration of the Olympic being held in Brisbane in 2032.

The scent of Northshore’s target demographics are teenagers and young adults, who approximately fall into the age bracket from 13 to 25 years old. The workshop aims to attract both Queenslanders and tourists visiting Queensland, regardless of religions, races, or nationalities. The desired audiences are open-minded individuals wishing to create and craving creativity. Their hobbies would usually be art-related and they tend to seek creative and innovative activities to try with friends or families in their free time. They are also relatively active on multiple social platforms and love to take pictures as well as check in when going to new destinations. Additionally, the workshop is also expected to reach potential audiences who are the desired demographics’ families (parents, carers, siblings). On that account, The scent of Northshore is ideal for its target audiences as not only does it offer activities requiring creativity and imagination, but also provides interesting information on Northshore Hamilton in the past. Moreover, the workshop is designed with its own distinctive aesthetic, which makes it highly recognisable on different social media platforms.

Apart from the diverse content, The scent of Northshore acknowledges that the ambiance of a place is equally crucial to our customers. As a result, the workshop will pursue a minimalistic style while embracing a cozy and friendly vibe to make our visitors feel as comfortable as if they are at home. The workshop’s theme colour will be in warm tones. It will also be furnished with a combination of wooden and metal furniture to present a clean and tidy look whilst maintaining a warm and welcoming feeling. To be consistent with Northshore’s nature inspired concept, lots of plants in different kinds and sizes will be utilised to impose a green and fresh appearance on the workshop. Overall, the workshop should encourage people to freely be creative and be aesthetically appealing for the purpose of social media.

Other than the popular smell, such as vanilla, rose, lemon, etc., The scent of Northshore also offers plenty of special odour produced from vines, palms, cedars, pines, orchids and figs. Some of the prominent ones are:

Sweetened black bean, which was an important ingredient for making Aboriginal people’s staple food, creating fish and animal traps, and even making woomeras (Kerkhove, 2021)

Moreton Bay figs that was used for bird-hunting as the fruit was eaten by many birds (Kerkhove, 2021)

Yellowwood whose smell is described as "sweet but not floral, crisp, yet warm. It is a mixture of lily and clean linen, but without the musk of either." (Fragrant earth, 2014)

Giant ironwood with a "eucalyptus smell” type of fragrance (Pot, 2013)

Australian Tulipwood & Yellow Tulipwood

Liana vine - a common Australia plant species that is used for scent (Simpson, 2010)

Undoubtedly, the idea of a craft workshop is not something extremely innovative or new these days. Therefore, it is significant to make The scent of Northshore odour workshop stand out from the others, which a diverse and unique scent range would be one of the elements to help it become outstanding. In the past, a large proportion of Northshore Hamilton now was known under the name Yerrol or Yarrol to the Aboriginal community (Kerkhove, 2021). It was described as “Hamilton’s pocket of rainforest”, which referred to a riverine, subtropical rainforest that was home to many animals and vegetation (Kerkhove, 2021). Inspired by the area’s flora and fauna, especially the variety of plants and flowers, the workshop’s essential selection for candles, soap, and essential oils will include the scent of Northshore’s unique vegetation.

BRIEF

“The scent of Northshore” project will address one of the client’s leading challenges, which is intervening the Workshop precinct to make the area more attractive and engaging to a broader community (Northshore's client brief, 2023). Therefore, one of the Workshop spaces will be utilised to build a craft workshop that offers activities consisting of making three key products, namely candles, essential oils and soap bars. As a craft making workshop, it will provide visitors with a place and lots of opportunities to freely express their creativeness and artistry. When coming to The scent of Northshore, customers are able to decide which kinds of craft they wish to try, then to customise their arts, specifically in forms of candles, essential oils, and soap bars, with a diverse selection of smell, colours and materials. Moreover, tourists can make friends, as well as heal and wind down after their busy work lives as the ability to create a relaxing and social space is one of the reasons why craft making workshops are always popular. Consequently, this workshop project is expected to not only fulfil the client’s vision of giving tourists a “immerse yourself” experience when visiting Northshore Brisbane, but also meet the requirements including making use of and drawing attention to the unique characteristics of the site, together with encouraging return visitation, which will be explained in the following posts (Northshore's client brief, 2023).
