Ava finished up wrapping her knuckles when she heard someone come into the training room behind her. She didn’t look up, didn’t feel too much of a need. Instead, she addressed the new arrival with her back turned, “If you want the really good punching bag, I got dibs. Unless you want a better partner than some leather.”

Addie couldn’t find their mom, and they never learned to track scents the way their mom knew how to. They resorted to checking places she might be. The cafeteria came up empty, as did where she was staying. Next, they decided to check the training rooms. "I’m not here for the punching bg. I’m looking for someone.”

“everything kinda fucken’ sucks. wanna go to 7-11 with me and get a slurpee or something??” oscar needed a distraction from the massive disaster that was the beginning of the new year. he needed to keep his mind off of the dangers they were facing or he would dwell on it too much and end up spacing out. 

Things had quieted down. Addie still hated to be in the temporary dorms, hated to be reminded of what happened. More than anything, they missed the labs. Throughout most of their time at Paragon, the labs had been where they spent as much time as they could. Going so long without getting lost in their research, they felt lost almost. “Getting out of here sounds great. A slurpee sounds even better,”

another smile lit up her face, wrapping an arm around them. no matter what, she would PROTECT them. ❝   yeah. i can show you later, if you want. it’s not too far, ❞   she nodded, kissing their temple. all they needed right now was her love, in her mind at least.  ❝   i know, sweetie. i know it is. but, you know what, you’re gonna get through this, okay ?? you’re gonna be FINE,  ❞   laura told them,  ❝   i’ll make sure of it.  ❞   she had learnt to filter out the noise, the  c h a o s , basically everything, but she knew what it was like. she didn’t want to think about it - she didn’t want to relive the pain she went through as a child. laura was just happy to see that they weren’t injured, better than most people had that day. they weren’t injured or or in a coma or  dead, they were right here beside her, and that’s all she needed to know. ❝   you’re alive, and i’m grateful for that. ❞   what she would do without them and her family, she didn’t know.  ❝   so, any projects coming along in the SCIENCE world ??  ❞   she asked, giving a toothy smile, albeit an awkward one. she didn’t really know what to call it. science was never really her thing. 

They nodded. “If it’s not too much to ask, I’d like that.” Around their family, they felt small. It wasn’t ever a bad thing but they would never be as dangerous as the rest of their family. That made them stand out, even if they had the same powers as the rest of them. It used to comfort them in the brief moments they felt less than the people around for using their mutation solely to make science easier for them and not to save people, but in that moment, they hated it. If they were like the others, they wouldn’t feel as if their world was ending. They leaned their head on their shoulder. “Okay, I’ll be fine.” They repeated. “We do tend to be pretty hard to kill.” A joke, that was good, right? “I did get your healing factor.” Science was the only thing that really made sense anymore. Science was theory that could change any second, but it was something they knew everything they could about science. They knew the differences between the biology of hundreds of species, they knew the differences between variations in viruses and illnesses depending on their hosts. Science was familiar.  “It’s been recently discovered that pregnancy can have adverse effects on the cognitive abilities of those who get pregnant. It mostly affects memory.”

“No, I don’t need them.” Areum needed to be able to hear around her so she could help others get where they needed to go. Areum had her apartment that she could go back to– untouched by the attack. Others weren’t so lucky. Fishing the slightly tangled ear buds out, she handed them to the other. 

Addie nodded. They accepted the earbuds. “Thank you. Is there anything I could do for you?” Helping might distract from the horrible things they heard. “I’m gonna put the earbuds in, but I’ll be able to hear you still. I have enhanced hearing.” Until then, they had never hated their powers. They never made them reckless, too many years as a human and having a protective mother made that impossible. But, now, they were too much and they hated them.

when jon had to register his senses had become too much and much like then , his senses were too much for him to handle . he could hear every CRY , everyone GRIEVING and smell just about everything even though he was nowhere near the school that had gotten destroyed . he could still feel everything across town . jon nods towards the other . he was just looking for a familiar face– hoping to see afzal , nadya , damian , katsumi… anyone. “ i don’t know… hopefully before we all start finding places on the floor to sleep on . “

Their mother was used to the sounds of grieving, the smell of destruction, how everything seemed so much worse when you knew how those around you were in pain, other their injuries, over the injuries and worse that happened to their loved ones. They didn’t know how.  Everything was too big, too loud, existed too much. “It’s just so loud. I don’t know how much longer I can handle it.” Reaching up, they wiped their tears off their face. Then, they looked up and leaned their head against the wall. “If we could find places on the floor to sleep, I don’t know if I would be able to.” When the time came to sleep, the building might quiet enough for them to hear the screams of people woken up by nightmares.

When he saw Addie sitting in the hall, River felt his heart aching a bit. For all he knew, she had never been used to this. And for what he knew, he didn’t want his sisters or anyone from his family have to experience that, everyone suffering all around. If he only had a few scratches, and it was being lucky, he had seen the other people around, wounded or worse. Listening to her, he sat next to her anyway. “I think it’s the worse time to be alone.” He said slowly. “I have no ideas.” He answered her question, then. Moving a bit closer to his niece, River passed one of his arms in her back. “Come here.”

They barely registered their uncle sitting beside them. Everything was loud, footsteps echoed from every direction around them, and too many smells left them unable to pick out any one scent. It was harder to control their senses when they were in pain, and how could they not feel an insurmountable pain when they knew that too many people around ached because of the loss of loved ones and that others fought for their lives in the hospital. “I think being alone would be less loud.” One could hope. They leaned their head on his shoulder. “I don’t know how my mom does this all the time. It’s so terrible.”

Luke hated seeing everyone hurt both physically and emotionally. Unfortunately hurt was everywhere he looked in halls of the old Paragon. Though it had him down, he was still determined to help even in the smallest of ways. “I think they recently did it.” He replied. “I saw it posted outside one of the offices and took a picture so I would be able to find my dorm later.” He pulled out his phone and brought the picture up before handing it to them. 

His voice seemed too loud and too close for them. For a few moments, they processed that they said. (Everything was too loud for them. A thousand different sounds echoed around them, and they had to sort through them to hear anything of use.) They looked up and blinked, their eyes adjusting to the light. (No matter how dim it was, it felt like it was too much light.) Staring at the phone screen, they searched their name and found it. “Thank you.” They ran a hand through their hair. “It’s just so loud here.”

“what are you doing in here?” he asked, furious to find another person playing at hero. this was his job, this is what he was contracted to do. lars stared at the person in front of him, eyebrows raised, expecting to hear some bullshit, blaze-of-glory answer. the injury they had sustained was clearly not an issue to them, and so he didn’t bother to comment on it. “get out of this building before it falls down around your ears. don’t be a fatality and don’t be a hero.” fucking hero kids.

“I’m looking for the research. It’s important.” At least, it was to them. Everyone around them was a hero, and, well, they weren’t. They didn’t have the stomach for being a hero, but they had they had their research. They couldn’t just leave it to be destroyed. Hearing the man’s anger, they pulled open the drawer and frantically looked through the papers in it. “I’ll be fine, I promise. There’s really no need to worry about me. Unless my head comes off, I’ll heal from any injury I get.”

Areum could understand what they were feeling. She was feeling haunted by the sound of the bomb and the way the building collapsed in on them. She had stayed behind to help get students out, so their screams were still in her ears. And there was nothing she could do to forget it, or help the stranger forget it. “Soon, I hope.” Areum murmured. “I have some headphones in my jacket that I had forgotten about. I don’t have any music, but it might help block some of the noise…” 

In the moments after the earthquakes and the attack, it had been easy for them to ignore the suffering around them. There wasn’t enough time to wallow in the sounds all around them. Now, they heard cries, frantic heartbeats, choppy breaths, and more horrid sounds. There was nothing for them to distract them with. They had no way to do research, and they imagined all their things had been destroyed. “Thank you. That would be nice, but only if you don’t need them.” Not that they thought the headphones would help much. Everything was amplified by virtue of their mutation.

an ANGER grew inside her at the sight of her daughter in such distress. she swore she would protect her, and she was  f a i l i n g.  ❝   yeah. they’ve already assigned them,  ❞  she nodded, taking a seat beside her,  ❝   you’re going to be rooming with mandy wilson and peter parker, okay.   ❞  she gave a soft smile - one not shown to many - and placed a delicate hand on her shoulder. laura was used to this. she’d experienced suffering, her own and others, from a young age. her senses had adjusted to it, unlike her daughters. ❝   i know you’re not used to any of this. but, you don’t have to be alone. i can stay. we can talk.   ❞   laura wasn’t exactly an expert on ‘TALKING’ or ‘FEELINGS’ but that didn’t mean she didn’t understand them or experience it. when she was younger, people assumed she was incapable of either - yet, she proved them wrong time and time again. ❝   being alone at a time like this can make it worse. trust me.  ❞  

Their mother’s presence was enough to comfort the, had been since the days everyone thought they were human, and Laura meant they would be safe no matter what. “Thanks, mom.” They wanted nothing more than to hide in their temporary dorm and hoped that the thin walls blocked enough news that they blocked out the noise all around them. “Do you know where the room is?” They looked up at her. They would admit that they weren’t acclimatized to violence and suffering. Their childhood had been sheltered in that way. Offering Laura a small smile (mostly to reassure her that she was helping, at least a little bit.) and wiping away their tears, “It’s just so loud.” Of course, they assumed Laura already knew that. “I don’t think I can handle being around many other people right now. But talking sounds nice, I think. You staying sounds great, too.” They leaned their head against her shoulder.

“You have got to be fucking kidding me.” Raven practically snarled the moment she realized this was indeed related to this bloody registration. From a locked and coded chest hidden in her office, Raven retrieved her emergency stash of weapons, two pistols, throwing knives, and a shit ton of ammo (and no, her P.O. did not know she had these, but Mystique didn’t go anywhere unarmed) before making her way outside into the fray. 

She spied a small group of registration goons closing in on a group of students working to get out. Without hesitating, she raised her gun and shot one in the shoulder downing him, drawing their attention, “Come and get it, fuckers!” she yelled before raising her other arm, discharging both guns towards the rest of them before they got near the students.

Addie stared at Mystique. “The gunshots are loud. Very loud.” It was stupid, given that their powers made violence easy, but they never grew accustomed to violence. Maybe, if they hadn’t spent a decade and a half without the powers characteristic of their genetics, they would have grown used to violence. It seemed every member of their family was okay with violence, many inflicted it themselves. But it made them—”I think I am going to vomit.” They frowned. 

They pressed a hand to their forehead. Then, they ran that hand through their hair. “I miss my lab so much.” But it was destroyed, and it was probably too dangerous, anyway.

Addie sat in the halls of the temporary dorms. They buried their face in their knees and covered their ears. Something unique to such mass suffering attacked their senses. It was too much. It felt like they first got their senses all over again, but instead of adjusting to the sounds of everyday life, they heard cries and smelt ash and concrete. Unlike the others in their family, they weren’t made to experience the suffering and consequences of crisis. At the sound of footsteps (barely audible above the sounds around them), they said, “I think I just need to be alone. Do you know when they are gonna assign dorms?”

the blast was so close, it was right there. she saw the package explode. thinking it had just been new testing supplies, since phase two was being rolled out next week, she was ready to get it started. but her spider sense, it had warned her just in time to pull a table in front of her just before the package exploded, sending her and the table into the nearest wall. everything hurt, her mind felt scattered. she couldn’t hear, barely seeing what’s on front of her. rubble rained down around the small blonde as she struggled to stand. by the grace of something watching over her, she’s able to move things away from her. gotta get out of here. the only thought she can focus on right now, getting out. fear cripples her for a moment, standing but not moving. and then she hears another rumble in the distance. the school! moving fast, the youngest stark gives nothing about her secret. always one to wear her web shooters, the spiderwoman swung her way through the registration building to find any survivors ( taking them with her and pulling them out ). 

the aftermath is clear, the school’s been attacked. slumped on the ground, she wears half her spiderwoman suit, the mask laying in her lap as her body is supported by one standing pillar. she can’t see anymore, her hearing is totally gone. where is everyone?

Addie stood next to the blonde. “Are you okay?” The explosion was loud. Loud for a normal person, louder for someone like them. Their senses were working on overdrive. They smelt the ash in the air, blood against concrete seemed more vibrant than normal, and they heard the frantic heartbeats of too many people. They smelt the distinct scent of fear, as well. Still, they had a healing factor which was more than any of the rescuers had. “I can take you to get help.”

having a healing mutation and a level head was a blessing. winnie was kneeling next to a stretched out, injured person next to her, keeping them calm as best she could. “listen,” she said softly, pushing hair out of the person’s eyes before turning to their wound. “this is going to tingle. it shouldn’t hurt but it’s going to feel weird. ready?” the redhead asked, smooth hands poised over the wound.

“It’ll heal on its own. No need to bother. I wouldn’t want you to waste your energy” Addie smiled at the redhead. They looked down at the wound in their side and pulled out the little bits of concrete that kept them from healing. “See it’s already healing.” They gestured to the tissue and skin knitting itself back together.

lars was a security guard. this was his job. he needed to get as many people out of the building as quickly and as safely as he could. he ignored the fact that a past lars would have laughed at his current desperation to help people and powered his way through the building, guiding out students and teachers firmly and helping injured people get carried out. “is anybody in here?” he called out into a classroom, already walking in to spot whoever may have needed him.

The explosion had rattled Addie. Injuries weren’t an issue for them, despite the hole in their knit sweater and the blood that stained it. The wound healed nearly as soon as they received it. (No matter how long they had their healing factor, it still threw them off how fast it worked.) The classroom they spent many hours in was mostly destroyed, but they still searched the classroom for students. Then, they began to search the desk for the research the professor kept in the desk. So much research already lost. They hoped they could find the research in the broken mess that was the desk. “I’m here!” They yelled. “But I’m fine. You can go help someone else.”

“I can’t believe it’s nearly the end of the year!” It didn’t seem like five minutes ago that they had seen in 2017, and now here they were about to wave it goodbye. “Have you stated thinking of what your New Year’s resolutions might be?”

When you spent as much time in the lab as Addie did, time eventually blurred. Being a TA helped with that. It gave them a reason to keep track of time, but they still weren’t the best at it. “I don’t do resolutions, actually. But I would love to hear what your’s are!”

“i just don’t understand why i have to celebrate and get all dressed up for new year’s eve when it will be like any other year. me alone when the clock strikes twelve,” ellie hummed as she continued flipping through her book, not interested in talking about the upcoming festivities.

“I spend most of my nights in the lab. I don’t even know when midnight passes most nights. I probably won’t on new year’s eve either.” In truth, they never really cared for new year’s. “But I can see why some people like it. It seems fine if you like parties.”
