Today as we honor those who have served our country, if you are in the Washington, DC area or Northern Virginia it might be a good day to visit those who rest in the Arlington National Cemetery. Arlington National Cemetery is one of the most humbling, beautiful, awe-inspiring places to visit in Virginia, the final resting place of many of our nation’s greatest heroes. One cannot help but feel a sense of reverence and gratitude while visiting the cemetery. It is filled tombstones and monuments for those who dedicated their lives to the service of their country. In March 1775, the Virginia Burgesses met at Henrico Parish Church (now St. John's Church) to discuss creating and training a standing militia. Patrick Henry sponsors the resolutions for this and delivers the speech that electrifies his audience, propels Virginia towards war, and launches Henry into the history books. Reenactments of this infamous speech still take place at the St. John's Church today and it is totally worth going and witnessing! I'm working on a future article about the home (Gunston Hall) of one of my (many) favorite Founding Fathers, George Mason. Mason is often referred to as the "Forgotten Founder." He was, however, very important to the creation of the country and its founding principles. Other Founders relied on his words and wisdom for guidance. He, along with a couple others, are the reason we have the Bill of Rights. Gunston Hall is located in Lorton, VA. If you are traveling to Northern Virginia, I highly recommend stopping by and learning about this great place and George Mason. The staff is wonderful and they do a great job at presenting great information on the tour. Gunston Hall is about 12 miles from Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington. Once you have visited Gunston Hall, stop by and visit Mt. In addition to being a place of considerable power, the U.S. Capitol building is truly a magnificent work of art, inside and out. It is one that can only be experienced firsthand to be truly appreciated. As such, not only is it a monument to the American people, but also to those who created it. If you are planning a trip to Washington, D.C., a tour of the Capitol is highly recommended! It is an awesome experience. The battle of Iwo Jima was a 36-day test of grit, determination, strength, strategic planning, military power, and, most of all, the human spirit. The American spirit prevailed. The Rosson House is the crown jewel of Heritage Square in Phoenix, Az. Named after its first owners, Dr. Roland and Flora Rosson, it was built in 1895.
