Music does not exist in a vacuum. It is a product of our world: our experiences, our cultures, our histories, our politics. And all of it is filtered through that beautiful viewpoint of yours. Every lyric you write is a truth. Every note you sing is your voice. No-one can take that away from you. I’m not a citizen of the United States. I’m a young, straight, white woman based in the UK. This week has been hard for many, but I cannot say that the upset I feel this week will reach the lows others are feeling. The best I can do is help: with donations, with words, and with the projects I have, like The Shyless. Wherever you find yourself today, be it the US or not… you may be in a situation where you feel like your voice is being lost under the current, that the issues you face and the art you make is all a futile effort. I do not want to let you be unheard. I don’t want any of us to create into a void. Our music is our voice, our therapy, our freedom. The Shyless was created to be a safe space for female-identifying and non-binary people who want to write music and connect. I feel that it is my duty to follow through with this intention, now more than ever. We need an outlet. We need inspiration. We need a place for creativity and support. So please send me your music. I will broadcast it out, we can listen to each other. Take some time this weekend to sing or write, if you feel like you can. After all, what is a revolution without a few good protest songs? I will be here, and I will listen to you. We all will.
