There are seven doors on the stage and behind each door secrets are revealed. Six of them also reveal towering works of art by Chihuly. The Head of Exhibition at Chihuly Studios, Britt Cornett, says the glass art helps audiences visualize the story. This haunting story with psychological twists and turns is enhanced by the beautiful music that accompanies it.

Influential Architecture

The arch is a classic architectural element of construction, great in compression with the use of masonry materials the arch has been used in many a cathedral. With the addition of the buttress to counter act the thrust of the arch parishioners began to occupy the arch using the church to conduct business transactions ignoring the sermon because of how these flying buttresses section off the church blocking the view from the apse. Clergy men used to walk up and down the isles ringing bells in order to regain the attention of the parishioners. The lack of sight, and sectioning off of the space that the buttress delineated was directly affecting the occupant’s behavior and actions when inside the cathedral.

Spatial Awareness

It is the goal of the projections to influence the spectator’s movements through the space. The projections don’t react to viewers movements; the projections influence the observer’s actions. The projections choreograph the movement of the participants, through the creation of a narrative directing the viewers in the navigation of the digitally created environment.

Scales of Projection

Projections are scale-less, they can increase and decrease in size depending on the distance the projector is from the respective surface being projected upon. Projections are given a scale once they come in contact with a tangible surface. The scale can range from a monolithic cathedral to that of a ten inch cube. Manipulating the projections allows for the creation of a diverse range in scales. Multiple scales can be achieved in one piece simultaneously when projecting onto multiple faces of a complex surface.

My Conceptual Theory

Phenomenology is the study of the development of human consciousness and self-awareness, and how people begin to develop their relationship and understanding when moving through space. Phenomenology is defined as a discipline that studies and describes appearance; this analysis of appearances is studied through human experience. “The essence of an architectural work is the necessary relationship between concept and form”. The relationship between concept and form is based on the mind’s interpretation of what the brain perceives. Phenomenology evokes the sublime, which evolves as an almost uncanny mixture of what is known and what is familiar to us, and how the human body starts to interact with its environment.

In the early stages of childhood development, a child’s vision doesn’t fully develop until they are they are 24 months of age. Until then children are most draw to strong geometric shapes and high contrast colors. Bold geometric patterns in contrasting black and white tones act as stimulants for a child’s underdeveloped sense of sight. Even as we age and develop we are still drawn to works simplistic in design with a strong sense of geometry with a monochromatic pallet, such as the architectural works of Le Corbusier and paintings and works of Sol LeWitt.

Brunelleschi’s Experiment

Brunelleschi painted an exact copy of the Baptistry in front of the famous cathedral in Florence on the surface of a small mirror on top of its own reflection. To prove it was an exact replica that would fool the eye Brunelleschi drilled a hole in the mirror and then stood directly in front of the Baptistry and looked through the peephole to see the real building. By holding the mirror in front of the panel which blocked the view of the real building, but now reflected in the painted version of the same scene. Then by moving the mirror in and out of the way, Brunelleschi could show that he had produced and exact replica of the 3-dimentional, octagonal building on the two dimensional surface of the mirror. This two dimensional version of the building made it possible to analyze the structure mathematically. Brunelleschi discovered not only a central vanishing point which was defined exactly opposite to the point Brunelleschi was standing in front of the Baptistry. This point also determined the horizon line, the horizon line passed through the central vanishing point and is also the line on which the two point perspective is defined by the oblique vanishing points.

Linear Perspective - Experiments in linear perspectives were trying to create an illusion into reality. During the Renaissance a paintings were meant to be like a window meaning that you shouldn’t see any of the two dimensional elements of the piece. By looking into the painting at a two dimensional world becomes a continuation of our own 3 dimensional world. Linear perspective draws your eye into the vanishing point, and ideally should be displayed at eye level with the horizon line of the piece. No matter where the human intervention is placed in the piece all of the eyes should be level with the horizon line, while their scale and feet alter with the paintings perspective.

Architects in Theater

A theater set should create a mood and atmosphere offering possibilities for the movement of the actors. These flexible sets are designed to transport the audience into the alternate reality of the piece. The illusion created is that of a false environment, similar to theme parks such as Disney World and movie sets in Hollywood sense of hyper-reality is intended to be achieved to convey the attitude of the story being told.

The American Mysteries – Diller Scofidio + Renfro (1984) The Set design is a nine square grid with counterweight panels hinged at all sides. The set is transformed into discrete configurations by the performers in a seamless transition.

Metapolis Ballet – Zaha Hadid (2007) The set design was created to look like weaving topography of different layers of materials. The piece’s integration of media and dance create a new environment in which the choreography of the dancer is amplified to a further extreme.

Bauhaus – Theater of Totality (1924) Bauhaus School is best known for its contribution to industrial design. Artists such as Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Oskar Schlemmer, develop a new kind of theater based on these principles. Their work was an attempt to synthesize the theater's essential components-space, composition, motion, sound, movement, and light-into a fully integrated, abstract form of artistic expression.

The Built Perspective

Optical illusions in architecture and art are most successful in the creation of their illusion when they are grounded in reality. The addition of a three dimensional figure added in the foreground of the illusion adds depth to the piece giving the illusion a footing in reality.

Hana Bank building – Seoul South Korea (2007) artwork by artist Ko Woo-Suk, was meant to resemble and hourglass. 20 stories tall the green and black stripes that visually bend its way around the building create the illusion of a warped exterior. The skin is a full scale monolithic sized wrapper covering the exterior facade of the building.

1010 La Trobe Street – (2007) Externally, the building’s striking façade references many of the themes and visual codes of our technological era. Offset precast concrete panels and solar glazed curtain walling allude to the visual language of circuit boards, bar codes, Morse codes and binary numerals.

The Invisible Barn – stpmj (2015) Invisible Barn is a site-specific design proposal that re-contextualizes the landscape of the site by projecting the landscape on the structural proposition. The visual illusion that blurs the perceptual boundary between the folly and the site, allows the folly to be disappeared and invisible in nature, reconstructing the landscape of the site. The incisions that penetrate through the folly allow visitors to maneuver in, out, and around the structure.

Projection Mapping of Facade

Architectural typologies such as museums and theaters are the most commonly chosen sites for projection mapping. These typologies act as the perfect blank canvases for the digitally enhanced façade intervention because of its lack thereof or minimal interference of windows.

Doug Aitken – SONG 1 (2012) Hirshhorn Museum, Washington D.C. a series of 11 overlapping projectors placed strategically around the circumference of the museum. The museums white concrete exterior makes for a perfect blank canvas. It was the first ever 360 degree convex screen cinema experience ever created. Projectors must be at different angles, to avoid on site sculptures and trees the projectors cannot be equidistant from each other. So even after all the computer calculations, the final images were mapped using a grid, and a programmer manually matched overlapping sections, block-by-block.
