Soulmates AU where the bond comes to life the first time your soulmate makes you laugh

(I came up with this soulmates idea awhile ago, and every now and again it sneaks back up on me and makes me so happy)

Okay, so in this version, the bond flares for the person who laughs. The other person gets a tug that says it happened, but not the bond light up. Not until they laugh because of the other person.

So, let’s talk Speirton.

Carwood, obviously, laughs for the first time when he sees Ron run across the field towards Foy. He can’t believe it, but then there’s so much more to do after the fighting that he doesn’t have a chance to say anything until Rechamps.

And then Ron lands that “Hell, it was you, first sergeant” speech on him, and Carwood’s so fucking overwhelmed he can’t speak.

Ron ends up very quietly admitting he knows Carwood is his soulmate; he felt the tug, and he feels it every time he looks at Carwood. But he also apologizes. He’s not much of a laugher, you see. He can’t promise how long it’ll take for his own bond to flare up and fully connect them.

It does take awhile. It takes until Hagenau. After the fake second patrol, Ron really starts trying to get Carwood to fucking REST ALREADY. And finally, he catches Carwood trying to sneak around to do his job, and he’s so exasperated, he just fucking LAUGHS. This great, booming laugh as he calls Carwood a fucking idiot and grabs him by the back of his coat and drags him back to a nice, warm bed.

And Carwood’s beaming the whole time because he did it. He made Ron laugh.
