Caves & Clouds interview
Caves & Clouds interview
You remember E.W Harris right?? He played at our 8th event last year, and wowed us with tunes from his album Mimetic Desire. Well, he’s not one for hanging about – he’s involved with a brand new project. Leo finds out more. You recently launched an IndieGogo campaign for The Winter of Our Discontent – the debut album from Caves & Clouds, a collaboration between yourself and Jo Kroger; tell us a…

Seb Doubinsky - Suan Ming - Review
Seb Doubinsky – Suan Ming – Review
What a lovely way to fuck up your head! Suan Ming is ambitious, trippy, funny, serious – but most of all – it’s great fun to read. The short chapters (64 in total. Bonus prize if you guessed that’s the same amount as the I-Ching), will have you feeling like you’re flying through the story. There are little nuggets of information, delivered to you in such a way to keep you guessing throughout,…

Speculative Fiction: where there are more believable portrayals of time travel than convincing depictions of friendship between women.
Speculative Fiction: where there are more believable portrayals of time travel than convincing depictions of friendship between women. What I’m about to talk about is probably the subject of many a thesis. As you read this there are likely hundreds of wide-eyed, caffeinated students across the land scribbling away furiously on this very subject. To all of those students, researchers and critics,…

Massive THANK YOU to everyone who performed/came along to our Event #7 the other night.
We had some fantastic talks/readings/poems/comedy. Everyone who took the stage did a sterling job, we learned a hell of a lot about world building, making comic books, Hibs fans and Will Smith. I hope you all had fun and will be joining us again for the big 2-dayer later in the year. We will be keeping you posted.
Yesterday was a wee day of rest here at Spec HQ, you might not of noticed but our host enjoyed himself a wee bit too much.

An Interview with EW Harris...
An Interview with EW Harris…
Last year we were lucky enough to see EW Harris play an acoustic set at a High Flight Fanzine LIVE event at Nice n’ Sleazy’s, Glasgow. We instantly fell in love with the charismatic and charming performer. His songs offer brilliant, catchy country/folk licks with emotionally charged lyrics influenced by robots, mutants and of course – Deep Space 9. So naturally, we had to get to know him more.…

Book review - "Boldly Going Nowhere" by Steven McKinnon
Book review – “Boldly Going Nowhere” by Steven McKinnon
Scotland isn’t the kind of place where men have often been very open about their feelings. Even for my generation, attitudes towards mental health were never exactly what you would call progressive (the only time it was ever acceptable to admit to crying was after the 2003 UEFA Cup Final). It’s something we’re getting better at, though, and a young writer from the West of Scotland has just…
