Later on she would recognize the tight feeling in her chest as foreboding, warning that something was off, that something was wrong. There was tension in the room, not the usual easy calm between sisters, but a heightened sense of unease. Cissy brushed this thought away, nothing was wrong, clearly Andy was just upset about leaving her and Narcissa was as well. Nothing could be wrong.
The response her sister gave to the light teasing about packing caught her off guard. Narcissa was the one with all the books, not Andromeda, she usually borrowed whatever she wanted to read, but not without asking. Narcissa furrowed her brow and tilted her head to the side, questioning. “You do not have that many, you better not have taken all of mine! I need them to go back to school next week.”
“Two weeks? But you will not see me until Christmas!” Narcissa stuck out her bottom lip in a small pout, hoping somewhat that perhaps the thought of missing seeing her baby sister off to her final year of school would cause her to return early, or not go at all. Recon did not seem like something a lady, particularly not a Black, should be doing. It sounded dangerous, and while Cissa was sure Andromeda could handle herself, she did not want her sister getting into any fights, it was unbecoming.
The happy energy that had filled Narcissa at the sight of her favorite sister deflated. She wouldn’t stay even one more night. She was clearly too important, too busy and grown up for her little sister. Her heart sank, she supposed she should get used to this. Bella was married, Andy would be soon, and it would only be Cissy alone in the cold house to grow into an old maid. She furthered her pout.
“I am sure she did not intentionally forget to tell us, Bella.” Narcissa soothed, taking her role as the peacemaker between her two more outspoken sisters. Narcissa rarely stood up to Bellatrix, and tried to soften the eldest Black’s sharp edges and temper with her own soft nature.
She did not like to be touched, but did not mind when her sisters did because she trusted them to know they would not hurt her physically. She did not know where her distaste for contact came from, perhaps from the limited amount of affection she received as a child. Still this hug felt different, a finality to the embrace that ached with unsaid words. Cissy laid her head softly on her sister’s shoulder, enjoying the soothing feeling of soft fingers through blonde strands.
The hand was suddenly yanked away and Narcissa darted to the side, heart racing in apprehension at the unexpected roughness from Bellatrix. What was going on? Why was Bella being so forceful? “Please, do not shout Bella!” Narcissa pleaded, she did not like when people shouted. But her eyes could not help but zero in on Andromeda’s left hand, empty of the large diamond Narcissa had secretly envied ever since Lucius Malfoy placed it there.
“I am sure it is nothing Bella!” Narcissa did not shout, but her voice raised in fear. Bella’s wand was now pointed directly in Andromeda’s face. Panic flashed across Cissy’s mind, she did not know what to think, she didn’t know what was happening. They had fought before of course, but they had never used wands. How could Bella do this? Narcissa was frozen in place, half wanting to run away and half wanting to step in between them. “She only took it off as not to lose it in Spain, right Andromeda?” She looked back at her sister, eyes wide and pleading. “It does not mean anything else, you are still going to marry Lucius, aren’t you?”
Deep down, Andromeda knew it had to come to this. Later, she would be thankful for those few seconds she managed to hold Narcissa before her hand was yanked away. The action was jarring. Instinctively, protectively, she moved to take a step between the youngest and the oldest - like she was taking her rightful spot as the middle sister.
Bellatrix’s wand was on her and Andromeda eyed it. Never once had they pulled wands on each other and the weight of such an action was not lost on her. A cold seriousness crept over her. It was sent steel down her spine and made her stand up straighter. She’d hoped for too much when she’d hoped to slip away quietly into the night. She shouldn’t have put it past Bella not to put up an actual fight.
“Have you forgotten that we’re still sisters?” Andromeda said, throwing her sister’s words right back at her and gesturing towards Bella’s wand. Who pulled a wand on their own sister?
“I’m not going to fight you Bella.” She added firmly, but the grip on her own wand tightened slightly. Andromeda was actually telling the truth about this. She wouldn’t fight Bellatrix, but Bella was known to fire without hesitation and Andromeda wanted to be ready to make sure that both she and Cissy would not get hurt.
(And the fact that Andy was even having this conversation with herself was so surreal to her. The thought she would need to protect herself from Bella? Bella, her older sister Bella? The woman whose room she had slept next to for the entirety of her childhood. Bella whose hair she had once braided one halcyon summer… It was uncharted territory.)
Narcissa’s voice broke through the thin layer of ice that Bellatrix’s action had set over her heart. The complete blind faith in the sound of her voice struck the young witch. Andromeda’s conscience took her by the shoulders and shook her. That’s when she realized - she could not leave, not like this. She had to tell them something. She had tell them something that was true. Sisters. They were still her sisters. The words stuck in Andromeda’s throat and she had to claw them from her body and force herself to say them. There was a pause - a few seconds that stretched out into eternity for Andy - before she said:
“No Cissy. I’m not getting married to Lucius.. I… I’m in love with someone else.” Only once in her life had Andromeda heard the sound of a muggle gun shooting. In the vast emptiness of the manor, that’s what her confession sounded like now. The confession tore through the space between them. That was all the truth Andromeda could bare in the moment. She dared not mention Ted’s name. She knew her sister and there was no doubt Bellatrix would seek to kill Ted without hesitation. The only thing keeping her from already having done so was the mere fact that she’d only run into Ted within the safety of Hogwarts’ four walls.
Andy shifted so that she was more solidly between Bellatrix and Narcissa.
“Put away your wand Bellatrix. It doesn’t need to come to this. You’re going to what? Curse me? Put it away Bella. Don’t put Narcissa in danger too.”
“I would never hurt Narcissa!” Bellatrix almost never used her sister’s full name. Bellatrix was hurt that Andromeda would say that—Bellatrix? Hurt Narcissa? “I’m not the one who lied to her and is going off to Merlin knows where!” Bellatrix shrieked, holding her wand in a defensive position, right in front of Andromeda’s wand. Bellatrix was ready to fight, hex, curse, and maybe even kill. Truthfully, Bellatrix did not want to fight Andromeda. Andromeda is her sister.
Bellatrix remembered when their mother was pregnant with Andromeda. She remembered the day Druella gave birth. She remembered Andromeda’s first words, first spell, first time purchasing a wand. She never thought that she would be the one pointing a wand to her sister. She always envisioned her, and her sisters, both fighting for the Cause. Like a family, fighting together with the Dark Lord.
“Do mom and dad know?” She spat, “Do they know that you’re not marrying Lucius?” Bellatrix stepped to the side, still pointing her wand at Andromeda hoping to reach around Andromeda so she could grab Narcissa. Right now, Bellatrix does not trust Andromeda and wants her youngest far away from her. Thus, she walked in circles around Andromeda. Hoping for a space so she could grab Narcissa out from Andromeda. Neither her eyes nor her wand left Andromeda.
“Who is it?”
She asked softly, “Who is it Andromeda? Who convinced you? Who manipulated you? You’re marrying into a fine Noble family. One that will help us and our Cause” Her voice almost into a whisper, “Is it him? Is it that filthy creature from Hogwarts? Well, tell us the truth for once if you are truly our sister!”
Perhaps it was the height of the moment. Perhaps it was the fury of the moment. Perhaps Bellatrix just snapped for in that time and space she was gone. She entered into a new world. A world where the woman standing in front of her was not her sister but another person. She waved her wand and out came a spark. Arrows flushed out of that spark, heading towards Andromeda “Description!”
