Sunday Jump is a community open mic series held every 1st Sunday at Pilipino Workers Center, 5-7 pm in Historic Filipinotown, Los Angeles. We provide a safe space for marginalized voices to express free speech and uplift their communities.

Celebrate International Women's Day with us in March! With Her Voice, She Rises showcases literary and performing arts by AAPI women and will include Kundiman fellow Janice Sapigao. • Janice Lobo Sapigao is a daughter of Filipina/o immigrants. She was named one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s 2017 Women to Watch by KQED Arts. She is the author of two books of poetry: Like a Solid to a Shadow (Timeless, Infinite Light, 2017) and microchips for millions (Philippine American Writers and Artists, Inc., 2016) and three other chapbooks. She is a VONA/Voices and Kundiman Fellow, and the Associate Editor of TAYO Literary Magazine. She co-founded Sunday Jump open mic in L.A. We will be featuring Sunday Jump team members, Jaynese Poole (@jlp_ladybugg) and Sam (Sav) Magat (@_salvaje_93)! You might know them as our stagehands and photographer, but these multitalented womxn are ready to rock the stage with ya tomorrow night! Jaynese 'Ladybug' Poole from South Central, Los Angeles and Compton, California is a poet, dancer and screenwriter. She has been working with Street Poets Inc., performing spoken word, organizing community events, and holding safe spaces for youth throughout Los Angeles County and beyond. She is also a member of 4CLab, a non-profit, providing opportunities for young creative visionaries to share their stories through artistic expression. Samantha J. Magat is a young womxn straight from Baldwin Park. She is an aspiring poet, singer, and rapper. But most of all, she is hoping to put more of her ambition towards her photography. Her hopes are to capture the things we cannot see with the naked eye, things we cannot touch but we know is there. She hopes to take pictures that not only speak a thousand words, but make people feel a thousand emotions. If there is one thing in life she has learned through photography it is that in order to understand one thing, you must be able to see everything, perspective is key. We will also spotlight Filipino Voter Empowerment Project (@filipinovoterempowerment) this Sunday! Many of our SJ fam (shouts @pursuitofjoyfulness, @jensen_hari, @honeybobadoh) have worked hard with FVEP this past month, phonebanking and canvassing to encourage the local Filipinx community to go out and vote on Tues, November 6th! The Filipino Voter Empowerment Project seeks to: 1) Better identify Filipino-Americans living in CA: Because many Filipino surnames are Spanish in origin, Filipino-Americans often get grouped with Latinos in voter data, causing a perennial undercount and a lack of targeting to Filipinos. FVEP is seeking a better methodology for the identification of Filipinos and Filipino-Americans in California. 2) Survey Filipino-Americans about their civic involvement and voting behavior: There is precious little research specifically regarding the Filipino American community; most surveys simply lump Filipinos into the larger AAPI category. Working with UCLA's Asian American Studies Center, FVEP is developing survey tools to answer fundamental questions about the community: what are the most pressing issues to Filipino Americans, whether immigrant or first-generation? Where do Filipino Americans consume their media and get information?
