King of the domino effect

You might already be familiar with Brett Doar’s work: he’s the mastermind behind the Rube Goldberg machines seen in OK Go’s “This Too Shall Pass” music video and GoldieBlox’s “Princess Machine” commercial.

Before becoming a Rube Goldberg designer, Doar was a tour bus guide, commercial fisherman, special education teacher, jalopy racer and an artist.

A circuitous career path and five colleges later, he finally honed his ability to create kinetic gadgetry as a @ucirvine computational art and engineering graduate student.

Doar had always tinkered with toys that moved or set off chain reactions, but the fusion of technological and creative training at grad school “took my art to the next level,” says Doar.

In 2009, he had the life-changing opportunity to work on OK Go’s viral music video, which catapulted his career as a “contraptionist.” Since then, he’s built devices for The Colbert Report show, Nokia, Google, Disney, and many others.

Altogether, the planning and construction of one these elaborate visual feasts takes just one welder, one carpenter, one former Navy SEAL, and usually about three weeks to complete.

“And if everything goes as planned, that’s sort of a disappointment,” says Doar. “You come in with your ideas, and the piece has its own ideas. So you have to collaborate with the materials.”

Google Spaces has launched – but Facebook doesn’t seem to recognize it

This week, Google launched a new social application (Google calls it a “tool”) dubbed Spaces – available for both mobile and desktop – that combines messaging, collaboration tools, and easy access to YouTube and Google search. Whe nwe tested it out, it seemed that Facebook wasn’t really cooperating with our Spaces links.
