The suit wrapped around his hand as he continued, sheets of metal came down in front of the windows. "I'm taking the kid, that's a done deal. After that you'll forget about ever having it to begin with. The last few days will be like a bad dream. You'll wake up in your shitty apartment, have another scar to add to your collection and you'll continue with your life."

Tony hears movement from the next room over. Before he can even tell Wednesday to lock down the door, Dexy walls through almost calmly and a small dagger is thrown, stabbing Tony in the leg.

Tony hissed in pain when the dagger pierced his leg, his eyes darted around the room, his Matty hadn't done that. "Wednesday, who else is here?"

"Running data through facial recognition software."

He took in a deep breath and tapped his wristband, allowing the previously discarded armor to wrap around he rest of his body, while he yanked the knife out of his leg. "Fuck it, we're killing this guy. Assuming they've been here the whole time, they know too much."

Dexy growled.

"Stupid armor. Cheater."

Dexy quickly grabbed his gun from his holster instead. Stupid armor is knife proof.

"Cheater?" He laughed as Dex's info popped up onto the corner of his visors screen, Wednesday reading it to him. "What are you five?"

"You broke into my home. Big mistake on your part." He replied, as the aim assist locked into Dexy's head, he fired a blast of his repulsor, blue light streaked across the room. "No one's going to come looking for you here."

Dex growled again as he rolled to dodge the hit and fired his gun, aiming for his legs.

There was a hiss, followed by an electrical pop as the bullet pierced through one of the armor's platelets. A wire popped out of place as sparks flew, and rendered one of his legs immobile.

"Left leg mechanical failure."

"Redirect power to the missile canon." He ordered without missing a beat, an electrical humming filled the room as the missile launchers opened at his wrists.

Dex takes another shot, aiming for Tony's shoulder of the arm he is holding up.

This shot lands right in the main circuitry of the armor, this time around air escapes from the opening just before a flash of light follows it, the smell of smoke fills the room.

"Operating systems, catastrophic failure—"

The lights on the suit dim completely as he falls down, hitting the floor hard.

Dexy is quick to grab Matt's arm and pull him away. He hurries to the front door and groans in annoyance when it is locked down. He sees the tablet next to the door and fiddles with it, trying to peace ttogether how to open the door.

A soft knock was heard on Tony’s office, almost imperceptible.

Pepper, on the other side of the door, was biting her lip as she leaned closer to the door, waiting for any tiny sound or movement. In one hand, she held a bottle of wine, dark green glass catching the hallway lights. She practiced this calm, the kind she’s had to relearn how to carry around him. And she was ready to see if she succeeded.

"The doors open, you can come in." Tony called, he would have opened it himself if he wasn't reviewing the scenarios of cataclysmic damage for a new project. "What if we adjust the margin or error by 20%?"

One glance at the holograms revealed he was working on a cell stabilizer. It showed the same thing as before, one cell being stabilized would result in the others around it ripping open the rest of the body and an entire physiological collapse. He had some issues to work out, and likely wouldn't stop until he did. "What about multiple at the same time?"

The frosted glass sliding door opened with a soft hiss and Pepper’s figure materialized inside his lab. The scent of cleanliness, something chemical yet refined, instantly teased her senses and the sight of Tony bent over his work sent a sudden knot tightening in her stomach. She had not set foot in the lab in a long time, and even longer had it been since she had seen Tony like this.

Pepper offered a faint smile and set the stemmed glasses down on a nearby glass table. She moved toward him with small, careful steps, keeping a respectful distance, suddenly touched by a hint of shyness.

“Hey. I thought about the drink I think we both deserve… Do you have a few minutes?” Her voice was soft, slightly low, and yet something about it felt strange to her. Perhaps it was that sense of familiarity between them, of closeness lingering even though they had not truly been close for a long time.

He frowned watching red take over his hologram, cataclysmic failure. A few added components would do the trick. It was going to work, it needed to work. Another 100 kilograms would do it. His attention was swept away the moment Pepper's heels clicked across the floor. He smiled listening to her, joy on his face. It was hard to believe she was back. He found himself pinching his arm again, no it was definitely her.

"Yes I do, always for you." He replied, giving her a smile, he pulled himself away from his work, but let the holograms remain. The fixes would work themselves in, when they were talking. He hadn't mentioned in before and he likely wouldn't until the time came, but there aas a seriousness in his eyes. A topic he had been hesitant to even bring up, all masked behind the smile that seeing Pepper brought him. In spite of the bright lights of the lab, she brought a radiant glow of her own.

"Drinks, huh? What kind do I have the pleasure of enjoying with the best company in the world?"

Pepper allowed herself a small smile and let her gaze fall. For a moment, she looked around at the half-finished projects and mechanical parts arranged on a nearby table, at the holographic display running a testing program, and at JARVIS tucked into a corner of the screen, endlessly simulating something she could not quite decipher.

She turned her attention back to Tony, and when their eyes met, she had to take a brief breath, just enough to steady her pulse. She smiled at him gently and inclined her head slightly.

“Macallan fifteen. A special drink for a special…” Her blue eyes held his, her brows lifting just a fraction, the familiar gesture she made when she looked at him with unmistakable affection.

"That sounds like it is right up my alley." He grins at the news, eyes darting back at the projections as they turned red all over again. A frown tugged at his lips, at least until his focus returned to Pepper.

"Maybe a drink will be just what I need go help me figure this out, or get my mind off of it long enough to make me forget why I need to figure this out..." He nods in the direction of the Macallen. "You going to do the honors or should I?"

Before answering his question, she reached for the bottle of whiskey and poured into both glasses, then offered one to Tony. She studied him for a few seconds and lifted her glass slightly.

“I did the honors,” she said softly. “Now you tell me what we’re drinking to.”

Her eyes were filled with an affection Tony had not seen in a long time. And yet, beneath it, he could sense that a small restraint still lingered between them.

"We're drinking to life because I got mine back. We're drinking to life because you have joined me again. We're drinking to 11 more months, cause that's all I have left." Tony grinned, raising his glass, "Cheers!"

He motioned to the simulation running behind them. "That is unless I can figure out how to save myself, or how to get my hands on the time stone. Both out of reach at the moment, but I've achieved the impossible before, this time shouldn't be any different." He lowered the glass to his lips, taking a drink.

Pepper froze with her mouth left slightly open and her eyes locked on him. The glass hovered halfway to her lips, completely forgotten, while her gaze remained fixed and stunned, an endless blue that seemed to look straight through him. Her lower lip trembled for a second before she managed to speak. When she finally did, the sound that came out was faint, like a strangled whisper. She shook her head.

“W-what…? 11 months…”

A frown creased between her slender brows as she set the glass down with a hard click.

“No,” she scoffed softly, still in shock. “Tony, you can’t just go back to—” she had almost said ‘to her’, but swallowed the word. “—to this life and tell me you only have eleven months left to live. No.”

She took another step toward him, as if checking to see if he was real after all.

“Please tell me this is one of your dark jokes.”

Her eyes searched his desperately for the truth, but inside, her stomach twisted in on itself, tightening into painful knots because she already knew it was real.

"I wish I could." Tony replied, he shook his head. "God, I really wish I could, my life would be so much easier. I'd be halfway to Palm Springs!"

He smiled, his eyes twinkling, "I wish it was a joke, but it's not... That Symbiote gave me five extra years. None of them were good, but it bought me time. Now I'm back to the original game plan of 11 months. If I eat avocado toast and banana smoothies, everyday, I might get an extra couple of hours. One more midnight."

"Basically, I figure this out or it's lights out for me..." Tony continued drinking, emptying his cup. "Do you know how much radiation you get blasted with from using all of the infinity stones? It was a miracle I lived. A miracle that I managed to make it this long. It's catching up to me."
