It’s rainy here, the messy kind of rainy. Our feet are mud-splattered and the light is sunset-scattered. It’s cold in an uncomfortable, damp way. But if you stand still for a moment, you can hear all the voices of the water. Water sprinkling from the sky, water drowning the pebbles at the bottom of the stairs, water flicking off the ends of our hair.There’s a curious delight in the details here, in the noticing of the smallest things. Not for the details themselves but for the fact that they caught your eye. For the fact that you’re amidst them, experiencing them.Do you feel like someone threw you into endlessness?In a second, we will feel all the things that we are running from, but who says that this second has to end? The ripples of our collective being are stretching away from us, concentric circles of love and friendship that are lifetimes old, with lifetimes to go.Life is usually more realistic than romantic, and we’ll all deal with that in just a moment. For now, though, in this place where the rain falls through the ceiling into a fish pond in the middle of a house, just for now, on this porch that smells of mud and wet dog, we’ve escaped the things that we are running from.
