Help identifying the movie stars on Pope Ringo's robe
This image is from "Lisztomania" (1975), a bizarre acid-trip rock-opera biopic, about classical composer Franz Liszt. Roger Daltrey of "The Who" stars as Liszt, while Ringo Starr from the Beatles cameos as the Pope. Pope Ringo pays the womanizing musician a surprise visit while Liszt is in bed with a naked woman (Little Nell from "Rocky Horror Picture Show"). This scene is only the tip of the iceberg of the insanity that is "Lisztomania."
In the Director's commentary, Ken Russell says that the photos on Ringo's robe are of "movie stars." Russell says this is a homage, because the movies inspired him to convert to Catholicism. (Yes, a practicing Catholic convert made "Lisztomania.")
Unfortunately, Russell didn't elaborate on how the movies converted him, or who the specific stars in the photos are. Google Reverse-Image Search doesn't work, because the photos are still too blurry even in H.D. I can only make a guess at who a random photo is of, Google the actor, and search for a matching picture.
So far, I've only been able to identify one: Greta Garbo, on the bottom right (Ringo's left).
I believe that's Charlie Chaplin on his shoulder. This would make sense, since there's an entire scene earlier in the movie that homages Chaplin, implying that Russell is a fan. And in the commentary, Russell confirms that he loves Charlie Chaplin. If anyone can find the exact photo of Chaplin used, or correct me if it's actually someone else, please share.
Moving on, I'm 95% sure that's Katherine Hepburn on his back. But I can't find the exact photo on Google.
We see a few more stars, as Liszt kisses the Pope's holy cowboy boots.
I'm stumped on those two guys in the Arabian headgear. I Googled stills from "Lawrence of Arabia" (all of them), "The Thief of Baghdad," "The Mummy," "Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy," and "Two Arabian Knights," and haven't found a match. I feel those two shouldn't be too hard to identify. I can see them clearly enough to make out their faces, I just don't recognize them. As for the picture above them and the one below them, I'm stumped.
The big color picture of the woman doing the jazz hands is...also a mystery. I searched Audrey Hepburn and Liza Minnelli, to no avail.
I don't know who the mustached sailor on the upper-right is. To the left of Jazz-Hands, under (probably) Chaplin, is an actress from the '20s or '30s. Possibly Clara Bow, or a young Mary Astor. The picture directly under her, I can't even make out. The trio on the bottom is also a mystery; I thought the Three Stooges at first, but seeing the picture from a different angle makes me think one or two of the figures may be women.
The man with the blond or light-brown hair, on the left, could be James Dean or Burt Lancaster. Over on the right is a couple from what looks like a '20s or '30s movie.
It's a long shot, but maybe someone can recognize a famous photo even at this distance.
I'm surprised not to see Marilyn Monroe, because Ken Russell seems to be a big fan of hers. Maybe she is in there and I missed it. Naturally, I'm also a tad disappointed that an eccentric like Ken Russell doesn't seem interested in Peter Lorre. But again, maybe he's in there too.
Ladies and gentlemen, I present the courageous heroes who will save America and Gaza...
The "Progressives" Who Won't Do Anything!
We are progressives
Who don't do anything
We stay home and we
Refuse to vote!
And if you ask us
To do anything
Well just tell you...
...We're abstaining
Well I wouldn't vote for Hillary
Cuz she was problematic
And I couldn't vote for Biden
Cuz that geezer's hit the wall
And I won't accept an ally
If we disagree on anything
And I'm not voting for Harris in the fall...!
Cuz we're "progressives"
Who won't do anything
We just like to act
Righteous online
And when minorities
Beg us to do something
We'll just tell them...
...We're "protesting!"
Yeah I love to harp on Gaza
But the fact that Trump would make the war
A hundred times more bloody
Doesn't factor in at all!
I don't care about the outcome
I just like some moral hand washing
I'm fine if Trump takes over in the fall!
Cuz we're progressives
Who won't do anything
We'll vote "third party"
Or not at all
And when Trump says ...
"Let Israel finish the job!"
We'll just tell you...
"But Harris supports Israel!"
Adult Who Does Their Research: "And Palestine! She wants to rebuild Gaza and get the Palestinians a free state! Can you imagine the waves that would send through that part of the world, if a WOMAN president was the one to help the Palestinians? The affect that could have on Afghanistan? Iran?
She can't magically end the war, but she cares about the Palestinians one hell of a lot more than the Islamophobic narcissist does!
And not to sound cold, but the war in Gaza is just a drop in the bucket of terrible things going on in the world that Trump can make a LOT worse! Not to mention everything here at home! Have you been following *any* other news?"
Look, I'm sad that Ro was overturned
The middle class is shrinking
And I do remember kids in cages at the boarder wall
And I want to help the homeless
And I care about transgender rights
Just not enough to vote for them this fall!
Cuz we're Progressives
Who don't do anything
We just preach and fap
And b*tch online
And if you beg us
To please do something
We'll just tell you
We're not choo-oosing!
Using violent insurrection
To overturn the election
And all of the other blatant fascist writing on the wall
Doesn't bother me the slightest
Cuz I slept through Modern History...
Adult Who Does Their Research: You guys are putrid.
....And we're happy to let Trump back in this faaall!
Are you an "activist" who takes action? Or just a dressed-up vegetable?
TW: Human trafficking, SA, torture, discussion of scam farms
I see a whole bunch of people arguing that they would rather risk giving to a scammer than ignore someone's gofundme. I also see people saying things like "I can't believe some sick people are profiteering off genocide" and like, me neither, but I feel like you guys really don't understand who actually runs these kinds of scams and what they are.
Scams of noticeable scale-- like scam asks being sent from hundreds of accounts to every user on Tumblr!-- are typically related to organised crime in poor countries, not Susan from Milwaukee who wants a new coat and has no scruples. People get trafficked by gangs to scam farms in Asia and Africa where they're worked to the bone and tortured trying to get idiots in wealthy countries to part with their money. Genocide profiteering is pretty much the least evil thing these people do.
Here's a UN article on it. Obvious warnings for content related to human trafficking and SA.
Transnational crime syndicates based in Southeast Asia are fuelling the trafficking of people, either forcing them to commit crimes or for s
When you donate to a scammer, you fund these organisations and give them a reason to exist. It's possible some of the fundraisers are legit. I honestly find it unlikely given I'm not seeing any from any other countries where urgent fundraisers would seem to have great reason to exist but which haven't captured the same level of attention on Tumblr-- the number of Sudanese, Congolese, Ukrainian, Burmese or Uyghur fundraisers in my DMs is a fat 0. In any case, there are safer ways to help.
If you want to help (which is great!) you don't have to take the risk of paying for human trafficking. Donate to legitimate charities which have the resources to safely and effectively ensure the money and help is getting to the right people. Funding human trafficking rings in Myanmar is not a good risk to be taking while trying to help.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has caused immense suffering, with countless individuals displaced, harmed, and killed over the years. Tens

How’d he get elected in the first place? Genuine question because every single Israeli I’ve had a convo with has been heavily against him. I remember a friend told me it was something about not enough candidates but Idk that didn’t make sense. There’s also the fact that I’ve been hearing of protest for a while. So are all (or at least non-heavily-right wing) Israelis against him and his actions or is there still a group of people (citizens) who still support and agree with him?
the prime minister specifically is selected by the president, i think based on who they believe is most likely to form a government—not always the party that holds the most seats in the knesset. that's why in 2021 we ended up seeing a unity government between yesh atid (17 seats w/ party leader yair lapid) and yamina (7 seats w/ party leader naftali bennett) despite likud holding 30 seats total. in order to form a coalition government you need to hold a majority out of the total seats of the knesset (120, so minimum seats needed is 61).
there are a lot of reasons why bibi keeps being selected as prime minister. his party is the most popular, having received 1.1 million votes in the most recent election and holding 32 seats in the knesset. he's steadily gone further and further right when it comes to the parties he'll work with and imo the standards for who the far right will consider working with are much more relaxed than the standards that left-wing parties will hold. on top of that...other israelis like @homochadensistm would be able to explain better than me how he's sort of "bought out" the haredi voting bloc lol
israel also doesn't have ranked choice voting, so if a party you vote for doesn't meet the electoral threshold then your votes are essentially thrown out. in the most recent election, i think around 325,000 votes between two left wing parties, meretz and labor, were thrown out because they failed to reach the electoral threshold. for some perspective, Shas (right-wing haredi political party), the third largest party in the knesset with 11 seats, received ~393,000 votes. i think it was the leaders of meretz who refused to sign an electoral agreement with labor which would have allowed them to share votes, and they faced a lot of criticism for this decision after the election.
that's my understanding of why he keeps being chosen for prime minister anyway. currently, his coalition government only holds 64/120 seats in the knesset. this is by no means a huge majority, which explains why you're seeing such large protests against decisions the government makes, and also why you'll meet so many israelis who are against bibi + the current government.
I really really wanted to get something done for Mermay, and while I had a few ideas in mind this was the one that got finished in time for the end of the month.
This little fish lass is based on my favourite animated movie of all time, Yellow Submarine. Her design is inspired by the titular sub and her name is Eleanor (as homage to another famous Beatles song ;) )
Had I more time I would have worked on her face. I was aiming to get her looking similar to the human character designs in the movie but she comes off as a little creepy XD Aw well, fits the film I suppose!
‘Beneath the waves, betwixt the worlds, in the middle of here and Pepperland swims a gentle giant mermaid. A friend to seafarers and music makers. Graceful as an ocean liner, gentle as the soft waves on a moonlit shore. Quiet as the inky depths, illusive Eleanor.’
I’m not too late for MerMay!!!
It’s almost become a habit at this point to draw my beloved Eleanor for MerMay as she is my only mermaid and I love her so. How can I not when her design is based on the Yellow Submarine? I though it would be fun to replicate a screenshot from the Ghibli film Ponyo with Eleanor communing with the iconic sub and one of its famous passengers ^_^
(note this isn’t supposed to be any kind of strange shipping (pun intended) art. Eleanor is just a curious gal who likes to hear news and insights from other worlds)
