He wished he could believe Jason. He wanted to believe the things Jason was telling him, to not feel as if they were lies. It was hard to accept what Jason said as truths when he didnāt see himself the same way Jason did. And, of course, the million dollar question was which one of them was right?
"Iāve done a lot of questionable things in the past. Hiding in the shadows all the time warps your sense of purpose, your sense of self. There are thingsā¦ things I can never fix, things that I will never stop regretting, things that will never heal no matter how much time passes.ā Heād never thought about it all this clearly before, and it was sharp, painful even. Heād always tried to push the feelings away and not pay attention to what caused them.
Now he was far too tired to play pretend any longer.
He closed his eyes again, allowing himself to rest his head on Jasonās shoulder. He was exhausted, but he couldnāt let himself sleepā not when nightmares that shook him to the very core were awaiting him in his subconscious. āThereās a lot you donāt know about me,ā he continued, his voice brittle. āAnd honestly, it would be best for the both of us if it stayed that way.ā
Nico almost wanted to laugh at Jasonās obvious worry, but doing so would send knives through his skull, and he didnāt want that. So he kept his voice level, low and quiet. āHead feels like itās splitting open.ā He faltered, breathing deep through a burst of white-hot pain shooting into his brain. āHappens when I get dehydrated, or when I hyperventilateā¦ If I get some water or something, it should helpā¦ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā "Yes, I do, just wait a second" He moved back from the weight of Nico's head on his shoulder carefully and stood up quickly ready to set foot to the fountain by the end of the cabin for some water. "Would you like some ambar or ambrosia? It'd take me no time to fetch you some."Ā It's not like it'd take him any effort at all to grab him some, it wouldn't be the first time he snuk into the infirmary without the medics permission.
His eyes roamed around the room as he filled the glass with slightly cold water, his warm hand creating small rings of steam around his fingertips, and he couldn't get Nico's words out of his mind, wondering if he could be right, if it was true that it was better not to try to untangle the cagey mess that was the son of Hades.Ā
The problem was that the more Jason knew about him, the more he wanted to know. He thought about what had happened, about the way his friend carried out his actions from the moment he met him up until now and he thought about all that pretty often because he couldn't soothe his curiosity. Nico seemed so complicated he only wanted to understand him more and more, and it being hard only made it more engaging.
Shaking the thought off, he walked up to his friend and offered him the glass, quicklt taking the spot he had occupied just a minute before. Taking a quick look at him he exhaled the smallest sigh. He wouldn't push it, whatever Nico wanted him to know about him, that's as far as Jason would know, but the fact that he still perked up his interest was undeniable. "There you go, don't drink too quick" he said in a quiet voice "water's a bit cold."

"I shouldnāt have asked, Iām really sorry." It was entirely hypocritical on his part, asking Jason about something so personal when he himself had been so reluctant to share the same thing. But he supposed they werenāt strangers anymore, so that changed things, along with what had just transpired between the two of them. It was relevant, it wasnātā¦ an absurd thing for Nico to ask.
It had been insensitive, though, and he felt bad for it.
One of the worst things about it was that he could provide slim to no comfort to Jason if he was struggling with that part of himself. He wasnāt as clueless about himself as Jason was, but he was still unfathomably afraid of coming to terms with that sliver of his identity.
"It probably doesnāt mean much, coming from me," he started, having no idea where he was going with this. "But itāsā¦ itās okay if you donāt know, or if youāre not sure." He laughed, quiet and self-deprecating. "You have any idea how many times I second-guessed myself? Eleven years old and I hadnāt known feelings like the ones I had were even possible for someone to have.ā
He pulled his legs up to his chest and folded his arms over his knees, resting his chin on the bend in his wrist. āLeast you got a bunch of people to support you and talk to you about it,ā he added casually. āThe worst thing you could do is isolate yourself and try and figure it out on your own. I know from personal experience.ā
Ā There wasnāt much he could do besides that, but he thought heād done alright for a guy as skittish about the subject as himself. āThe reason I askedā what you did in there was, uhā¦ā His heart was starting to beat painfully fast. āYou donātā¦ Youāre notā¦ into me, are you?ā
Nico wanted to continue with itās okay if you are, it doesnāt change anything, but that would be a complete lie because it would change everythingā and maybe not for the better, because Nico wasnāt sure how he felt about Jason.
Jason was larger than life and Nico was so pathetically small in comparison, so even if there was something, Nico didnāt know if he could handle someone like Jason.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā If Jason hadn't been leaning against the door frame he would've probably fallen down on the marble floor. His cheeks had had a faint tint of pink an instant ago but now they were bright red and totally gave away the nervousness that was spreading through his body in restless waves.
He looked down, fidgeted with his fingers, tapped his feet on the tiles and did anything he could to avoid eye contact with the son of Hades as he mumbled and fumbled and muttered stuff that made no sense in a weak attempt to buy time for his response. Time that he wasted because the question had taken him back so much that he didn't even know where to begin with his answer.
"Ah-eh" well, it was a start.
His blue eyes were fixed on the tips of Nico's shoes now, his hand traveling up to brush fingers through his own hair.
"No- I mean I- not like that" he thought. He wasn't sure, though, he didn't even know what his head was doing, how was he gonna be certain of something like that? "Well you know- I mean-" Everything in his mind was messy and he was starting to feel light-headed. "I don't even know, honestly, but what I did back there had no- no second intentions." Or second thoughts, really. "I didn't mean anything by it."Ā
