A question I get asked a lot while working at a public library is "how do you deal with homeless people?"
And the answer is, we don't.
The unhoused people who come here seeking refuge 99% of the time understand that they will be kicked out if they misbehave.
The people you have to watch out for are Jessica, who only came because the kid she didn't want had to visit for a homework assignment and she just *needs* to yell at her child for asking to borrow two books or stay an extra five minutes, or Michael, who came in to look at porn on our computers for whatever fucking reason, or Karen who just wanted to come by to throw a fit that the particular book she wanted was checked out and harrass our staff about our collection being too limited.
99% of the time, the people we need to ban are middle to upper-middle class white people while the homeless and mentally ill/disabled people mind their own damn business and are honestly some of the best patrons we have.
I bring this up because today we had a man come in. He stopped at the desk, pulled up a chair and said "I'm newly homeless and was living in my car. I'm disabled. It was impounded. It's raining. I don't have a phone and I don't know where to go tonight."
And we did what we could to help. He was incredibly kind and patient despite his obvious anxiety and stress, more than most able bodied, housed patrons are to us under much less dire conditions. I liked knowing that we were the first place he came.
We have so many people like this who come in everyday. Many are quiet and keep to themselves, but sometimes they talk to us.
They tell us about how they're taking a few courses on a scholarship they applied for from our library's computer at the local community college to get their diploma. Or ask about a manga or dvd or book we might have to help them pass the time.
One woman, who comes in daily with her tattered walker always says hello to me and likes to work on the new jigsaw puzzle with me when we set one out.
So like, treat unhoused people like people. Treat disabled people like people. I don't want my library to feel like the only safe space in the world, but I'm glad it can be one of them.
I'm so sick of hearing about how "the homeless are ruining everything" when they are some of the kindest, most respectful people here. Sometimes they mutter, might not have had a place to shower, and might need a little extra space for their backpacks but that's FINE. It Doesn't Matter Actually. None of that is a problem or any of my business to care about (unless they request help/services), and I also don't think it's any of yours.
Having homeless people in America is a total disgrace to say the least. If this country can afford to blow off a trillion $ annually on the military industrial complex that hasn't won a war since WW2, then we can afford universal health care for all and housing for the needy!
One of the kindest men I ever met was a homeless person. His name was “Slow-Walker”. Talking to him made my day a thousand times better. I wasn’t in a good place at the time but anyway, his sense of humor was awesome. And he told me to just enjoy life. It’s been over a decade but I still think about him sometimes. I doubt he’s alive anymore but if he is I hope he’s doing okay.
My therapist, who specializes in adults with ADHD, recently told me that all of her clients need a three day crashout period after a big life change. Finish the semester? Crashout. Change jobs? Crashout. Go on a really cool, really relaxing vacation? Crashout the moment you get home.
It's true of literally all of her clients. She works with a lot of them to put systems in place so that their crashouts are only three days. This includes the high-powered execs who travel regularly for work. It does not matter how successful or high functioning they are - they have ADHD, and a crashout is just part of the process of living with it.
I'm sharing this with all you ADHD friends out there, just in case you (like me) start shaming yourself if your crashout lasts more than one day. It turns out three days is kind of the best case scenario. Be kind to yourselves!
“Devil May Cry” fandom please feel free to ignore this. Especially, if you don’t want minor spoilers for the new season on netflix. Plus, I’m blabbing about personal stuff in an attempt to understand my own thoughts while giving praises and criticisms about the show so…😬😅
Also does anyone know any good places to play the games? I genuinely enjoy the characters and the lore and I want to learn more and experience the original source material in the way the original creator intended. Thanks.
I’m having complex emotions and I need help understanding them because I am a) neurodivergent and b) trying to better myself/understand myself. So! Here we go, I guess?
While I enjoyed the new season of “Devil May Cry” for a multitude of reasons there is one thing that bugged me… I was expecting a bunch of songs from my teen years (like in the previous season). I was sitting there thinking to myself “Cool. Nostalgia. Not bad.” What I WASN’T expecting was to get SUDDENLY MENTALLY FLASHBANGED BY THE ANTHEM FROM EMO YEARS OUT OF FUCKING NOWHERE! I’m talking about “My Immortal” by Evanescence.
(Nothing against that band btw. They were my favorite as a teenager with undiagnosed depression and they have a very special place in my heart because of that. Hell, music was one of the only ways I could express myself in a very strict religious household. Also Amy Lee has a phenomenal voice. Even though I haven’t touched this music in over a decade it still comforted the angsty teen in me).
However in the moment my feelings of “yay nostalgia” were replaced by “oh, dear lord, here comes the trauma I’ve been repressing for over a decade”. While, in the same moment, I was also squealing from happiness over what was happening in the show. (Also, that particular song is supposed to be about grief so having it play during what was supposed to be a nice, wholesome moment felt… Kinda wrong, I guess? But that’s just me.)
Then again maybe there was a deeper meaning behind it that my exhausted ass wasn’t getting because I’m brand new to Devil May Cry and I don’t have the full context.
Ooh, and on an extremely positive note, I absolutely enjoyed the subversion of tropes. Particularly with Virgil where he was basically like “Okay, I’ve been manipulated but I’m not going to fall for the other villain’s manipulation like they were hoping. I’m just going to kick both their asses.” And Virgil has my absolute respect for that.
I also loved how Lady talked to Mattie— A little child who’d just been through several incredibly traumatic situations— and told her not to let these experiences define her. That really resonated with me. Mostly because I went through trauma growing up and I wish there had been someone like Lady to tell me that it would be okay; That I’d make it through it. I’m almost 32 now and have yet to find a healthy way to deal with my past but I’m trying to do better and deal with it on my terms.
I just wasn’t expecting “Devil May Cry” to remind me of that stuff. Especially during a time where I’m trying to confront my issues while also being scared out of my wits to face them. 🤣 But hey, that’s just one of the many jobs of stories— To disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed. In my case, I guess my version of “comfortable” was to ignore and repress my feelings, thinking I was better off not feeling and was stronger for it. Except, doing so just made them more volatile and harder to control. I could also kind of empathize with Virgil on that bit. Although what he went through was A MILLION TIMES WORSE than anything I experienced. I swear to god, hearing him tell Mattie his perspective on things combined with seeing how he was taught/raised was like getting punched in the face by my younger self.
My other favorite thing was seeing how Dante, Lady and Virgil all went through similar trauma but had different ways of dealing with it. Dante by holding onto what little light/joy he had and ignoring what hurt. Virgil by taking his pain and harnessing it while also burying the rest of his emotions/perceived weaknesses to survive in literal hell. And Lady who basically said “screw it I’m confronting this bullshit so I can finally deal with it”.
On a side-note: This also makes me think about how us Millennials are dealing with our own demons. Whether we’re choosing to be like Dante, Virgil or Lady depending on what we went through. How some of us are either burying our trauma, trying to confront it or are in the position to teach the next generation what we WISH we knew back then. So that they, hopefully, won’t hurt the way we did.

Currently giggling over a thought: That one extra in Atlantis: The Lost Empire (the gas mask goon who Kida kicked in the crotch TWICE) had to have been having the worst work day ever! 🤣 I can just imagine this guy’s inner monologue after getting kicked—
“-indiscernible swears of pain- WHY?! The Commander said this would be easy! ‘Easy’ my ass! Oh lord I’m never going to walk straight again! Ooooowww! This crystal better be worth it…”
And Later during the battle (the dude is probably flying one of the planes): “NOPE! NOPE! NOPE! I was wrong! VERY wrong! Not worth it! Not worth it!”
or when Helga gets thrown off the hot air balloon: “Holy shit! Did the Commander just throw Lieutenant Sinclair to her death?! Wow! That’s harsh… Should I help her? I dunno she scares the crap out of me…” -balloon catches fire- “…Well shit… Good for her! Okay then, time to save the Lieutenant… Not because I’m loyal or anything. I’m just afraid that she’ll come back to haunt me if I let her die…” -humming some kind of heroic tune to himself as he goes to help-
and finally when the volcano erupts:
(probably flying upwards at the speed of gtfo, holding an unconscious Helga) “shit! shit! shit! I knew I should’ve gotten a better job!” -screams in terror as he flies up, praying the plane doesn’t stall-
