@thetristanhunt
You’re right. I really – I really ought to talk to them about this in person, but I’m barely getting up the nerve to call them about it. Would you really go with me? If I wanted to go, you would really come with me?
Of course I would. I think you should get your own venue. I'm not really ready to meet your parents, but I will because I support you.
So, I’ve just decided that I’m going to try and get in touch with my parents. Talk to them about… you know, stuff. I mean, not even just us, but like maybe opening a restaurant out here. I mean, I’ve been working at Lou’s for a while now, but I don’t really think I’m gonna have enough money to buy a venue on that salary… Uh. So, you know, wish me luck.
And… Maybe, talk me into actually calling them.
I'm sure you have friends that could lend you the money, but if you really want to speak with them - You might not want to do this over the phone. I mean this sounds like the kind of thing you'd want to discuss in person. In a public place of course, so they can't cause a scene even if they wanted to. I could go with you, or not.
Well, uhm, I thought… I was thinking about you today, and it just sort of happened.
I’m glad you like it so much.
I've never been a muse before, even part time. It's a good feeling.
I do, if you write me out a copy or something I'll probably hang it on my wall.
duketobiasrossi:
Oh. I’m reading it to you, am I?
Okay, right. Hang on. Let me dig it up and read it off my phone. [Clears his throat loudly.] Uhm, okay. Be warned it’s not perfect but.. It’s.. You know… I don’t know… Here’s uh, here we go.
"There’s something in your eyes that glistens and gleams, something that flickers behind your brilliant irises, like wildfire, burning so bright, and so rampant, all the water in the world, could not extinguish it.
There’s something in the way that you talk, in the way that you laugh, in the way that you carry yourself, that screams your need to see the world, to follow your dreams, to be alive.
There’s something in your smile, that resembles kindness, that resembles fragility, and insecurity.
There’s something in your soul, a part set apart, hidden in the darkest corners, designated to the deepest worries, and the fiercest loves of your life, that bleeds through and shines on the surface, in the most unexpected moments.
And there’s something in your fragile bleeding heart, I can’t identify, that reaches out to something deep inside, my own.”
So… There you go.
That was beautiful. Nobody's ever written a poem for me before.
But do you wanna know what’s actually sort of cool about it? You have me all to yourself, so I can basically be like your personal chef.
Good. I’m really glad to hear that. Oh, sunburns are awful. I had this really terrible sunburn on my legs one summer that made it like near impossible to walk.
So, do you wanna know what I did today?
For now, so I'll cherish it as long as i can.
I can't remember when I had a really bad one, it definitely was when I was just a kid though. I've always worn appropriate sun protection ever since that point.
Did you find the flaw in Gwen's souffle recipe? There must be one,I don't believe it's entirely her fault they never work out. But go ahead, tell me.
Exactly. Well, not for a while, I think. Unless, by some magic I come up with a restaurant concept, menu and staff overnight. But I wouldn’t imagine it’s much farther away than say… two years? I don’t know. Depending.
Well, I can definitely do that. Oh, I can imagine. People just trying really hard to talk over one another to say what they want to say. Yeah, really. How’s your… family? Lily doing well?
Right, two years. Well I guess I can always wait, it's not like I have to wait that long to taste your cooking.
They are great, they're all great. I think Lily and Steph just got back from driving down to some beach for spring break. Lily got a pretty bad sunburn on her back, I guess she fell asleep or passed out or something. At least nobody left a inappropriate image on her back using sunscreen.
It’s the little things you really fall for, isn’t it? Not really the whole thing, or the idea of the thing. More like… the little things you just really enjoy. Like, I actually really like the smell of cooking wine, for some reason. And… I like the sound fennel makes when you chop it, and the way there’s sort of a rhythm involved in cooking, that I can just sort of fall into, that makes me feel like you know I was born to do it.
We just don’t know, Tris. We just don’t know. That would be really cool. I hope you can do something like that.
Exactly, it's the little things that you really appreciate even when you're having a bad day at work. So when should I expect your restaurant to open? I've never been to a really fancy restaurant before.
Well cross your fingers for me and when you see the clock hits 11:11 make a wish. That's what I told my family when I was talking to them. Here's some free life advice as well, never - ever talk to three people in one phone call. It's one big free for all, I'll never do it again. It might be easier with skype, but for now I'm recovering.
Well, maybe you should just start with talking about what sort of… makes you want to be a director, what sort of makes you fee like, wow, that’s what I want to do with my life. You know, like… things like that. Like, for instance, I wanna be a chef, and maybe run my own restaurant one day, because… I like to cook, I like being surrounded by the smells, and the sounds that go along with it. I like tasting foods that I’ve made, and watching other people eat the foods I’ve made, and seeing their faces light up when they realize that it’s actually good, and you know, I like feeling validated in that way. You know things like that, things like… the things that you love about it.
And then go on to talk about when you saw Next to Normal and how you feel like it was influential in your decision to pursue it for real, and how it made you feel and why it was important to you. You know that sort of thing. I don’t know.
Well, you basically just said it all. I like the atmosphere of being backstage and organizing everything and making sure the cast is all ready and the set is okay and just the crazy whirlwind of it all.
It wasn't just the fact that it was an amazing play, It was also my first real taste at the backstage world.I had been backstage on a few high school productions before, but nothing real like this. I crept backstage during intermission, and I was very lucky I didn't get caught and escorted off the premises. I would have been banned from Broadway forever. This really helps, what would I do without you? I hope I get to spend my summer working at the Globe, it would be amazing.
What’re they asking about?
Maybe I could help you brainstorm or something.
Uh just you know, why am I interested in theatre and what experience from my life got me interested in it. It's just frustrating because I didn't just wake up one day and think - Hey, I think I want to direct stage plays. I think it was more of a gradual thing, that led up to when I just happened to see Next to Normal on Broadway. I guess I could just say I saw that and it changed my life, and leave out the boring stuff but It feels like lying.
I need to finish this application for a work placement, but there's nothing worse than having to write an essay about your life experiences.
Tristan, could we have a bit of a chat?
Well, definitely stop that. Even if there’s a lot of things that are still sort of up in the air, and you’ve got a few problems with the whole royalty thing you’ve got to at least make an attempt to let the relationship grow. You and Toby both deserve a little happiness.
I’m sure he’ll be alright with it whenever you are. Yeah, well, you know. Maybe you’ve got a magnetism or something.
I suppose that means I should have a chat with him about all of this before we start talking about revealing our relationship to the public. Deserve it, probably - but very few people get it. The past relationships thing is another conversation we should have at some point. Have you had it with Gwen yet?
Magnetism? That sounds like an interesting trait to have, I don't know if I really have use for it now though. Would have been nice when I was single, but maybe that's what drew Toby to me.
Tristan, could we have a bit of a chat?
Well, you know, one day you might have to, depending on how serious things wind up being. You just have to remember that it’s okay to touch on the subject if it’s really bothering you. Valid point. Cherish the honeymoon period, try and stay in it as long as possible.
I understand that. And it does take getting used to. I would even hazard to say that I haven’t quite gotten used to it, and it does get annoying sometimes, but you know, you just sort of learn to ignore it most of the time, like white noise. Princess Diaries did just about nail it. There are quite a few royals in England, you know, because of Ivory Rose Academy. It was only likely you’d bump into a few of them in your time here.
That's what I'm trying to do. It's still somewhat casual between us. Only because I've been avoiding him a little bit, which of course stops thing from progressing like they would in a normal relationship.
I guess I'll find out. Eventually, I'll call Toby eventually and see when he's okay with actually going out for dinner. Right, even with the millions of other London residents. At least I still spend time with my Oxford classmates, otherwise I'd be a lot less grounded.
Tristan, could we have a bit of a chat?
Hopefully Toby has the foresight to talk to them about it before he tells the entire media about it. And even if he doesn’t you know, you could probably talk to him about it, and he’ll probably take your needs into account. Well, there’s plenty of time to give that a shot.
Have you told Toby about this? Not necessarily about the expiration date you feel the relationship has on it, but about the way you feel about his parents? That seems like it might be sort of an important conversation.
Yeah, it was quite the mix up. There is actually a shockingly large collection of Italian royals. The family back there is absolutely gigantic. And besides, as soon as you get past the first few months or whatever, they’ll be right back to talking about Duke Carlos Abalroado and his sweet Danish girlfriend. I know, it’s not for every one, and you won’t have all your privacy any more but you sort of develop a sense of humor about it after a while. I’m not a very jaded person, or at least, I like to think I’m not, but I think the whole press thing is rather amusing as it applies to me. I’m not very interesting, the only thing that’s even remotely noteworthy about me right now is my relationship with Gwen and yet every time I’m spotted eating a bloody sandwich the world ends. I don’t know, I don’t know maybe, I just think I can handle it. Somehow.
Well, you probably won’t have to do that too much, every once and a while sure, but I doubt it’ll be all that frequent and even if it is I doubt you’ll have to go all the time. Especially if it bothers you. And who knows? You might wind up liking it, you might end up liking the people you meet, or spending the time with Toby. I personally hated all the PR stuff when I first started out, but there are some people who are just always at things like that and I’ve made a lot of friends because of it.
It's his family, I don't really want to meddle too much with that. It's not really my place. I probably should, but I don't want to take things to that level so soon. The honeymoon phase if you will of the relationship is always the best, even if lately for obvious reasons we probably aren't in that phase anymore.
You're probably right, but even if it does go away or calm down after a while the idea that I'll never be able to have a simple night out followed by a walk with my boyfriend is a little upsetting. Or being able to go out grocery shopping, or with school friends for drinks without being hounded by photographers. I've seen both Princess Diaries movies, I know the deal. That might be my reasoning behind everything, I mean I've never needed a lot and I like a simple life. I don't want things to change. I don't think I'll ever like it but I guess I'll just need to try it and see. I'm still not exactly keen, but i won't be able to avoid it forever. My dorm has been getting a little lonely lately, and since I ran into a Irish duke or something recently I've accepted nothing will be normal ever again.
Tristan, could we have a bit of a chat?
Well, maybe distance isn’t such a good word, but I think you understand what I mean. Good. I’m glad to hear that I really am, because Toby likes you quite a lot.
I can imagine that’s a bit weird for you. Well, I don’t think that if things don’t change between him and his parents that means that the relationship needs to end. Toby’s been able to live with them disapproving of… or overall ignoring who he is for twenty-seven years, it’s not a good thing, but I’m willing to suppose he’d be more or less used to it by now.
To say everything’s been handed to me would be… a bit… well inaccurate. You know, I’ve just realized I haven’t had… that conversation with you yet, might as well tie it in.
I… grew up in an orphanage. My mum died in a car accident, with me in the car, and due to some sort of insane mix up, I wound up in an orphanage in Iceland instead of back home with my dad. So I grew up like a normal person. You know, minus the parents, minus the comfort, minus the comfortable well-fitting clothes, etc. I ran away from there at thirteen, spent a bit of time by myself, hiding away in this little barn I knew about, for a couple days, you know just in case people were looking for me, and then I sort of peeked my head out and went around trying to find some place to stay, and this really nice lady let me stay with her until I was about fifteen. I got a job then, at this little shop in town, and then when I had a steady enough income, I got emancipated and I moved into my own place.
I had to budget everything myself for years. And then, I became a painter, gained some popularity, ended up travelling quite a bit and found my dad in the process. I’m not exactly… I didn’t exactly always have things easy. I got lucky at the end there but for a while… I wasn’t exactly what you’d call a fortunate person.
Regardless, I understand the feeling. When everything went public all sorts of things happened, and all of my friends got examined by the tabloids with a microscope, but it really, honestly, the hype will die down. It’s not going to be forever that people are dwelling on just you and Toby. There is quite a collection of royals in this world, and tabloids can’t focus on just the one.
I just don't want his family to find out about us in a magazine. I know it's fairly common, but in my world everyone has always been very accepting of my sexuality. I just feel the need to try and change his parents mind, and springing it on them with the cover of a magazine wouldn't make that any easier.
I'm not saying it will end right away, but it just seems like there is an end date out there waiting, even if Toby and I never have any problems between us. I should have stayed in the States, everything there is so much simpler.
That's a pretty serious mix up, and I'm sorry to hear about your childhood and proper teenage years. Or lack thereof.. Nobody should have to go through that. Even the magazines that are sold in Italy? The world might have a lot of royals, but Italy doesn't. Even so, the idea of fifteen minutes of intense fame isn't that appealing to me. And I'm probably jumping the gun, but what if Toby and I get really serious? I'm not royalty material, you are even with the life you've had. Maybe it's just in your blood, but I don't see the appeal in all those photo ops and fancy parties and castles and everything like that. I'll end up accepting it because I want to be with him, but it's not something I'll see myself enjoying.
