I don’t really know how to put this but like… I feel like on some level the backlash against the view of Ashley as a “Space Racist” from people who like her gets to the point people portray her as “completely Unproblematic” and that… also really annoys me.

Like no, she’s definitely not out there advocating for lynching aliens, but trying to claim that she’s not at ALL xenophobic is also wrong. (Then again half the cast is xenophobic on some level including the fan favourite and even Shepard if you play them that way, so yes it gets exaggerated in regards to her.)

And maybe it’s just that the political situation nowadays makes me have zero patience for “no I don’t hate them, but we have to put our country planet first” or her blanket hatred for politicians but she does in fact really rub me the wrong way at times. Now is it unfair for me to let current the political situation in the real world affect my opinion of a fictional character in a political situation that does not align 1-to-1? Yeah kinda. Especially given that I get annoyed at the game for pretending the politics in it DO align with the real world. But I also think it’s kind of inevitable.

And I don’t think this makes her a bad character. Or that liking a character with politics analogous to an oughts Republican is bad. I love Wrex and killing people for money is significantly worse!

I just think that people trying to portray her as a space klanswoman and those trying to portray her as completely in the right are both missing the forest for the trees y’know?

Putting the real life situations & fiction convo aside because that's a big conversation and I can't do it justice in a reply, I agree with your last statement but I also think that most Ash fans aren't missing the forest for the trees at all.

Very few Ash fans see her as "completely unproblematic". The opposite. Most posts recognize her flaws. There's a lot of posts looking at how she grows and changes, and what she truly means in some instances - because she gets misinterpreted too.

It's just never a fair conversation if one side acknowledges flaws and all, and the other doesn't, piles on hate and does that for years. You said in your post that you know "it gets exaggerated in regards to" Ashley but I think it's more than exaggerated here. We're talking more than a decade of hate.

When the fan favorite has as many flaws - says a lot of problematic things - and gets celebrated instead, it tends to frustrate people because there's a reality here, and a lot of people are not looking at it. And so it's harder to become fair/just/nuanced at that point.

So from what I've seen, Ash fans aren't the group missing the forest for the trees, you know? They've been more nuanced already than others constantly making posts bashing her and never acknowledgeing what fan favorites do or say.

I would love it if everyone would look at different characters in a fair way because as you say, it doesn't mean characters are bad or even uninteresting - the opposite. And what makes them all so fascinating to me is that they don't stay as they are. They all evolve and change, and that's what I love about them.

OP, the fact that you acknowledge that this is an issue with literally every character in the series but still direct this frustration on Ashley alone is exactly the problem. Are you going to make a similar post for Garrus, Tali, etc? Does every piece of fan work for them need to have some asterisk to signify “yes I acknowledge this character’s complicity in systematic violence” or is that a standard only Ashley fans must adhere to?

That you even had lynching as an example shows a fundamental misunderstanding of why she feels the way she does. Yes, she is xenophobic and distrusting because of the First Contact War. Her grandfather did the right thing and prioritized his soldiers but was lauded as an act of weakness. You see her wrestle with this throughout the series if you talk to her. This is why she says she will never be good enough for the Alliance. It was never rooted in hatred for other races.

This also fails to consider the fact that the Council consistently throughout the series confirms her fears of dismissing human concerns and leaving them to fend for themselves. That she can become a Spectre, a defender of the Council, shows a tremendous amount of growth. Even her willingness to fight and possibly die for the STG shows growth.

I wonder why this character is not allowed to grow. Tali needed 3 games to get to this point.

This is why arguments like this are frankly dismissive and exhausting. This is a series that deals with genocide yet Ashley seems to be the one character that’s never forgiven. Bioware posted a single screenshot of her for the Legendary Edition and most of the comments were about wishing to violently assault her. I had to stop following her tag because people only ever wanted to express hatred of her. Maybe think on why her fans are constantly on defense mode.
