Bunjy, do you have any fun/cursed facts about sturgeon? They are my favourite fish

sturgeon are probably responsible for most of history’s “lake monster” sightings around the world! these giant fish do sometimes cruise around just under the surface, and from a distance their primordially scaly spines can look like some kind of fantastical serpent, or something.

these freshwater fish are generally huge, sure, but some individuals have been recorded as north of 20 feet long, which is frankly ridiculous.

add that to the fact that a single sturgeon can live for more than a century and you’ve got a lake-monster hypothesis!

(or sometimes “jesus christ how did a shark get into the Great Lakes?”)

Just because we have a name for it doesn't make it any less of a lake monster. In deep lakes in the south there are catfish that get to like the size of a small car. Just bc I know what it is doesn't mean it isn't an absolute terror

This is a great time to tell you about the Kali River Goonch Catfish!

The largest one ever caught was two metres long, and they could get bigger. They live in the Kali River, on the Nepalese-Indian border. Thanks to the local tradition of funeral pyres in the river, these things have developed a taste for human flesh and have been blamed for the deaths of at least 3 people in the last few decades.

In 2008, biologist Jeremy Wade visited the area while filming his “River Monsters” tv series, and after some investigation and catching a few of these things, concluded that they almost certainly are capable of killing and eating human beings.

There are a lot of catfish capable of killing (and eating) humans. All over the world. From the Goonch to the Paraiba, from the Wels to the Redfin, from the Flathead to (potentially) the Candiru. I'd say they're probably one of the most dangerous families of fish out there, right up with Piranhas (not as voracious as people think but if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time, or their food web is disrupted, they can certainly be devastating), and Rays (which definitely don't hunt humans, but have a bad habit of killing us by accident with their self defense). Certainly more dangerous than sharks as a whole (yes, some species of shark pose a (minimal) threat to humans, but the overwhelming majority are harmless to us).
