She chewed at her lip a moment as he spoke and tucked her thumbs into her shorts pockets.  “Well it’s been a long time.  We’ve... Got time to explain, right?”  She gave him a smile, hoping that things could be all right at the very least between them.  “I’ve been all right, I guess... I,” she paused, wondering if she should say this to her former rival, “I missed you.”

Well, this is… A surprise. Obviously he had taken it into consideration that they might run into each other on his return, but was he ready for it? Not at all. In the end all he can manage is a quick, “It’s been a while.”
