“Shut up,” he hissed back, his face red.

“Make me,” she spat. He turned to look at her, his eyes dark.

The world suddenly froze around them as she realised how close they were and how intently he was staring at her. It was dark in the common room, except for a few candles and the fireplace flickering orange light into the open space. McGonagall’s back was to them. She couldn’t see anything. James’ eyes flicked down for a millisecond--Lily might’ve imagined it.

His voice was tight with frustration when he spoke. “Evans--”

ok so i've been thinking and here's my idea.

James Potter never negotiated any beliefs. He was in love with Lily for seven years. He stuck with the same three friends for seven years. He refused to bend in the presence of a power that he’d never win against. He stood up for the little guy.

Always.

Severus grows up hearing this word from James and his ‘Marauders.’ James always chases after Lily like a lovesick puppy. James always pulls weird pranks. James always picks on him because of his house and beliefs.

Then Lily falls in love with James and Severus knows she will always be with him. She will always disagree with Severus. She will always want something better.

The Marauders and Lily didn’t deal in maybe. If they believed something, that thing was forever. For always.

And so when it comes down to it, Severus has one thing left. That one word left ringing in his ears for so many years from his worst enemy and his first love.

“Even after all these years?”

“Always.”
