Our brand new veterinarian at the clinic said in passing one time, “Sometimes I’m inadequate and that’s okay,” and I think about that a lot.
Sometimes we are going to screw up. We are all going to make mistakes. We are going to give 100% and watch as it’s just not enough. This is a philosophy that allows us to be human - a healthy approach to making mistakes.
Sometimes I’m inadequate and that’s okay.
So this post makes me sad now because this doctor used to be awesome and now is terrible to work with. She has no respect for her techs, no passion for the job, and is rude and condescending to clients.
I expected so much more.

Veterinary staff are a beautiful mixture of factual-thinking and intense superstition.
Don’t ever remark on how smoothly the anaesthetic’s going, don’t ever assume the “just a booster” appointment will take 10 minutes, and for the love of God don’t even think about saying the Q-word.
Last week, we euthanized a very long-term patient at my clinic. He had been my hospital patient several times and for a while his mama was in every other day. His conditions were becoming unmanageable. His quality of life was declining, and his mama understood that this was the kindest option.
Our hospital is open to clients at this time, but his mama didn't even want to come in. I went to find them in the parking lot with a growing sense of dread. I could already feel that this one was going to hit me hard.
His mama is sobbing when I get to her, and she immediately says after a sigh of relief, "I'm so glad it's you."
That is, without question, one of the highest compliments I've ever been paid. Entrusting someone with your beloved pet's care is one thing, but end of life care is something else entirely. She knew that I would show kindness and compassion to her sweet boy until the very end.
Be the compassionate care that your patients deserve. Be the face your pet parents want to see in their worst moments.
Me: *draws all the laterally recumbent, cyanotic, and/or agonal breathing cat rooms*
Me: *goes to call a cat room with respiratory issues*
Me: Please don't be blue please don't be blue please don't be blue
Me: “Hi, it’s Dr. Blank. What’s going on with Doofers?”
Owner: “He had surgery Wednesday and when we took the bandage off leg, the bone is showing!”
Me: “I see we neutered Doofers on Wednesday. Nothing was done with his leg other than a catheter. How long ago did you notice this?”
Owner: “Wednesday”
Me: “His bone has been exposed since Wednesday?”
Owner: “Yes”
Me: “I’m sorry, this sounds serious. Can you send a photo?”
Owner:
“His skin is gone”
Me: “Ok. So, his fur has been shaved for the IV catheter. But his skin is intact, is there a wound you can see?”
Owner: “You can see the bone right there. It wasn’t like this before the surgery.”
Me: “You can see the shape of his bone, yes, but his skin is still covering it. If you look at your own wrist see how you can see that bony bump? But it’s not exposed bone, it’s covered by skin.”
Owner: “His skin has been shaved off. His arm is skinny.”
Me: “His fur is shaved off. His skin is under the fur. It’s like when you get a hair cut.”
Owner: “But I can see the bone.”
Me: “Ok well let’s get him in for an appointment because that is serious. You can come right now.”
Owner: “I can’t come until Wednesday.”
Me: “We really need to see him, he could be very sick.”
Owner: “We can’t. I’ll call back.”
Small animal vet who never does large animal ever: Hey can I get your help in the ward?
Me, from the other room: Sure, what's up?
Small animal vet: I need you to place a catheter in this 80# calf. And oh by the way it should be a jugular cath have fun

My mom: So what did you do today?

Hello, friends. I am here, I am around, but I am going through Some Things and just simply haven't felt like posting.
In addition to some health issues, I have been trying to escape a toxic workplace for the last few months. It's very hard to post about all the things I love in veterinary medicine with the work negativity weighting me down, and complaining only seems to make me feel worse.
I'll try to post when I can, but I wouldn't expect anything regular until I fix these problems.
That being said, I love reading your responses and seeing y'all enjoy my very limited content. You have all made some bad days better and I appreciate you all very much!

We used the “door frame trick” for aggressive dog restraint yesterday and it works amazingly well. I had never seen it before but would highly recommend.

I’ve had a bad day, so let’s talk about the things we love in veterinary medicine. What is your favorite thing to do at work? It could be as simple as setting a catheter or as complicated as emergency medicine.
My favorite thing to do is dentistry. I find it immensely satisfying to clean tartar off teeth and how beautiful they look at the end. I can legally perform some extractions and I even enjoy doing that.

i feel like you do not get the high ground to talk shit about every breeder ever and say that they are all, without exception, greedy assholes if your rescue’s intake practices involve not spaying purebred or otherwise desirable dogs for two months on the offchance that they’re pregnant and can give you puppies
this is Referencing Something Specific but i feel Very Strongly that rescue should serve existing animals, not potential ones- and that no schrodinger’s belly full of babies is more important than the health, welfare, and adoptability (which goes down significantly when mom is competing with a bunch of cuter ‘mini me’s) of an existing animal.
oftentimes pregnant dogs (and cats, though this is less of a concern where i am) from poor circumstances experience health and welfare complications directly related to whelping or rearing that would not be relevant if the animal in question was spayed instead of birthing a litter that was conceived and gestated during a period where mom experienced some degree of deprivation, stress, and uncertain medical care.
AND quite frankly a lot of rescues do not know how to rear puppies appropriately and do some whack shit. if you cannot offer a standard of care better than the circumstances you’re taking the animal from don’t take on the additional responsibility??
Last time I had a rescue take care of puppies, they wouldn’t eat and the foster tube fed them. They all died of aspiration pneumonia because the foster stuck the tube down their throat.
For the love of god spay pregnant rescue animals please.
Actually, there are hundreds of ways to humanely kill an animal. And putting aside the fact that murder specifically means killing of a human, I guess I’m a murderer because I humanely kill (euthanize) animals almost every single day instead of prolonging their suffering. According to you, I should just let the cat in terrible kidney failure pass away from water and toxin retention. I should let the dog in heart failure drown to death in his own fluids. Animal control officers should let deer with broken legs flail on the side of the road until they die of starvation or another car.
And I for one would NOT want to prevent a human from dying a painless death. That’s one of many reasons I’m glad that I’m a DVM and not an MD. MD’s basically have to prevent death for as long as possible. Meanwhile, I’m able to give animals a humane, painless death once they start having more bad days than good. A death that they don’t know is coming and they are not afraid. It bothers me to no end that we cannot offer humans that same compassion. There is a reason that when vets commit suicide, they use the same drug that we use to euthanize animals. We know it’s painless and fast.

Just a thought from a vet tech who sees death come in all shapes and sizes every day: there are so many things that animals can endure that are worse than death.
You have never known pure terror until your vet is in surgery and sets the drape on fire.
