Today’s Google doodle is dedicated to Israel Kamakawiwoʻole on what would have been his 63rd birthday. Most people only know him from his rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” and are unaware that the majority of his songs were sung in Hawaiian and were highly political. He resented Hawaii’s status as a tourist colony and the treatment of native Hawaiians as second class citizens, often stating the case for Hawaiian sovereignty and independence directly in his lyrics.
