Recovery is not being cured. Recovery is being functional. Recovery is managing symptoms. Recovery is experiencing symptoms, but not letting them control your life. So while your disorder may not be curable… everything is recoverable.

Coping With Body Memories
Also known as somatic memories, body memories can be an effect of trauma and present as physical problems that cannot be explained by a medical cause. These memories can be physically painful to experience and are a common issue that survivors deal with. Here’s a list of things that help me get through it:
Breathe
Remember it will pass.
Focus on the feeling and getting it away
Remember that that feeling actually isn’t happening in the moment
Go to a private place and meditate
Breathe
Remember that it is all over and you are safe now.
Focus on your surroundings and other sensations (hold an ice cube, drink hot tea, chew gum, or exercise)
Talk or write about what feelings/memories are brought up by the body memories
Use positive self-talk to get through the feelings
Repeat affirmations
Do grounding exercises: name 5 things you see, 5 things you smell, 5 things you feel, 5 things you hear, and 5 things you taste (Note: donít do the senses that are triggering in that moment)
Do something nice for your body like taking a bath, putting on lotion or a nice smelling perfume, or wear comfy clothes
Write a letter to your body venting your feelings
Stretch
Aroma Therapy
Ask your body what it needs
What helps YOU to cope with body memories?
Stars,
If you can see this, please come back to us.. we need you.

anyone else feel like their trauma isn’t bad enough n they’re probably just overreacting to normal childhood experiences? same
When the protector about to get real salty and the mediator is in the back like
anyway it’s super fucked up people treat trigger warnings as slapstick jokes but spoiler warnings as serious and sacrosanct
I was literally in group therapy today and someone said “and we’re triggered- uh, I mean like set off…by stuff” like what the fuck?? people with literal mental illness for whom the term was meant to be used by feel too embarrassed to use the word bc of what these assholes have done !! it costs exactly $0.00 to not make trigger jokes lmao bye
when an alter comes out, takes a nap, and then leaves. like. okay? glad you had a nice nap i guess.
System mediators: Hate is a strong word that can literally translate to "to wish death upon" so try to use it cautiously.
System protectors: Yeah so anyway here is an alphabetized 10 page list of all the people I hate and would like to see dead by the end of next year.
There are few phrases more infuriating than “Why are you letting so-and-so bother you? Why are you letting your past hurt you? Why are you letting so-and-so control you?”
You’re not “letting” anyone do anything!
They did bother you!
They did hurt you!
They did control you!
You are allowed to be upset and sad and depressed or feel any other emotion about it!
Trauma causes lasting damage. You’re going to be affected and changed by for forever! You didn’t “let” anything happen; your abuser(s) did!
You are totally innocent. Please don’t think you have to take the blame when people say awful things like that to you! You deserve so much more love and respect than that. ♡♡♡
hey important reminder, please don’t ask someone about their trauma. a person might have blocked it out or avoids talking/thinking about it. it can cause panic attacks or trigger flashbacks. please be respectful to them. if that person wants to tell you, they will when they’re ready. also, if that person is a system, don’t tell them wether their trauma is a “enough” or not to be a system. it’s not your business and you have no right to judge.
“People with dissociative identity disorder often find that they have inconsistent access to skills, such as one knows a foreign language the other alters never knew they spoke”
What I thought this meant before I was diagnosed: one alter speaks five languages fluently, another alter is an olympic level archer, another alter knows advanced martial arts.
What it actually meant: one alter really sucks at making out, another can’t remember how to blow raspberries, only one alter remembers how to write in cursive.
just a reminder:
kids and teens are allowed to be angry without having that anger dismissed as a “tantrum” or “hormones”. they’re allowed to be angry with adults, including their parents and teachers, without being dismissed as “disrespectful”.
they’re allowed to be sad without being dismissed as being “moody” or “whiny”. they’re allowed to feel resentment without being dismissed as “ungrateful”. they’re allowed to be uncomfortable without being dismissed as “oversensitive”.
they’re allowed to feel restless without being dismissed as “badly behaved”. they’re allowed to feel lonely without being dismissed as “attention-seeking”. they’re allowed to be tired without being dismissed as “lazy”.
young people’s emotions are valid, despite the fact that our language has an entire vocabulary designed to make them feel otherwise.
me: *wonders something to myself*
alter that i didn’t know was co-con: *answers*
me:
A note on the topic of trauma that I personally found helpful in accepting the idea that I am a trauma victim is that one of the most widely accepted facts in the field of trauma research is that abuse is often not the common factor in whether somebody will develop ptsd.
Many people can go through awful things without developing trauma based disorders as long as they receive compassion and support in processing those events as they happen. The most common factor in developing something like ptsd is emotional neglect. And emotional neglect on it’s own can be enough.
Whatever you went through was enough I promise, you’re not overreacting. Abuse and neglect are traumatic at any level, you don’t need to have gone through the worst possible experience you can think of to develop ptsd. If it hurt you then it hurt you.
…..oh.
PSA: it’s okay to feel like shit, but never let a mother fucker treat you like shit
@thesexualquotes (via thesexualquotes)
no offense but mental illness has robbed me of so much
man. you know what I really wanna do? make a comedy play/tv show script about being in a system. because let’s be honest, it’s not a dangerous thing, dramatic yes, confusing yes, but not dangerous to people outside of your system. BUT IT CAN BE HILARIOUS JUST IMAGINE
“Wait, WHAT DO YOU MEAN (bilingual alter) WON’T WAKE UP WE HAVE A TEST TODAY!!!!!”
“…who put the body on a roof again?”
“uh…”
“GODDAMMIT (teenage alter) WHAT DID WE TELL YOU”
“…no, no (little), go to bed, it’s past your–No you can’t stay up the body is doing adult stuff– JUST GO TO BED!”
“questions we ask the host: what’s for dinner? what’s this word? who’s this? how do we talk to this person? what’s the equasion for this? things we ask (older alter): where’s the host?”
“okay, careful, careful, careful…AND WE’VE OFFICIALLY GOTTEN OUT OF BED, GOOD WORK PEOPLE, I’M PROUD OF YOU!”
“why is everyone asleep it’s literally 7pm?”
“why is everyone awake it’s literally 3am?”
“can everybody shut up I’m trying to front”
“CAN EVERYBODY SHUT UP THIS IS IMPORTANT”
arguments about what to do
including over what we eat
