I’m currently reading, or rather devouring, Sapkowski’s books. This is a sort of experiment, I want to try and see if I actually can (roughly) put on “paper” some passages I like. Here’s Geralt and co. meeting Regis for the first time in Fen Carn.

Why do people say “bow and arrow”, like we need the reminder of what kind of ammo is used? Nobody ever says “flamethrower and high-pressure tank of natural gas and propane”, or “minigun and chain of 7.62 mm rifle caliber bullets”.

What I've come to realise it is: Grown-ass women writing porn for each other.

Conclusion: I love it.

“The aspect of Geralt’s personality that appeals to me the absolute most is his desperate loneliness. It’s not something I’ve ever seen discussed in a fandom space and I think his own writer forgets about it sometimes. But I see it as one of the core themes of the first game and quite big part of the reason why that story worked so well for me.

He’s a monster-slaying savant. He’s smarter, faster and stronger than populations of whole villages put together. He struggles constantly to do the right thing. He never hesitates to define what a “monster” is in his own terms, despite outward appearances and authorities which never cease telling him otherwise.

And yet…all of these are qualities which do nothing but serve to separate him from the rest of humanity. He’s overwhelmingly an object of fear. People who don’t know any better will always make wards against his Evil Eye when he’s around. He’s terrified to lose what few friends he has, so he lets the less savory ones walk all over him. He can’t turn down a sexual invitation that he’s not truly interested in because when will the next time be when there’s someone around who isn’t afraid to touch him? He prickles every single time someone jokes that a witcher can never have children and wants with all his heart for Yennefer to avoid the same childless fate as him, no matter how useless all his efforts are.

I empathize with Lonely Geralt so much as a character - our paths are not in the least dissimilar. I just wish that part of him got as much coverage as the Badass Monster Hunter role.“
