Festival season
This week’s blog is a little bit satirical as I’m going to talk about Festivals, and seen as I don’t really have much experience in going too them I will talk about the weekend where I went to Latitude Festival in 2012 to see one of my all time favourite acts ‘White Lies’ (as well as the very reputable Paul Weller and the slightly gothic yet still awesome ‘Horrors’)
It started with a three hour drive to Suffolk on a glorious Friday afternoon (well I say glorious, it was sunny but that didn’t bode well when stuck in sweaty traffic on the motorway for hours). Anyway after a three hour drive it took us…yup about another three hours to park, as we kept driving from one car park to the next only to be told “no sorry this isn’t your drop off point” or “your car park is two miles that way”, I was ready to scream! But hey at least we hadn’t got the car stuck in mud…yet. Yes that’s right driving to our final destination which would FINALLY be the correct car park I managed to get my mates brand new white Fiat Punto stuck in the mud, and to make matter worse had to have a kind but none the less female assist me out of the predicament. The man in me was cursing the situation to the hilt.
By the time we were settled and had set up camp on Friday evening I was ready to sleep, however the act that I was there to see were about to grace the stage. So it was off to The Word Arena to see the mighty White Lies, and boy did they deliver. I remember managing to squeeze my way to the front of a tent packed in with no less than fifteen thousand other adoring fans to embrace the atmospheric sounds they are so famous for creating. After the show I was drained of that much energy, a little bit wet and VERY muddy I decided to call it a night, yes that’s right on the first night of the festival I went to bed at about midnight…rock n roll I know.
Day two was much of the same wet, muddy but rather happy atmosphere. I have to say some of the things I saw I would gladly pay lots of money to see again. For instance I saw a man in a full suit of armour chasing a sheep that had been died bright blue down a muddy track. Then there was the music, The Horrors who I have never been a huge fan off but always appreciated really surprised me. they were much better than I had anticipated and I can honestly say to this day they are the most pleasantly surprising band I have ever seen live. By about eleven o’clock on the Saturday evening after drinking alcohol since I rose in the morning I was ready for bed when on the way back to camp we stumbled upon a silent disco sponsored by Lucozade! This was simply too good to miss. For all those who aren’t accustom to a silent disco it is basically hundreds of people dancing around with headphones on to completely different music than each other. And what’s more they were giving out Lucozade completely free! Brilliant the perfect stimulant to keep me awake and able to party on through the night. Now let me give you a very important piece of advice #WonderFans. If you have been drinking alcohol solid for about fourteen hours, don’t then try and keep yourself awake by drinking three litres of Lucozade in fifteen minuets because it WILL turn your bowls to gravy. I offer you this advice because I learnt the messy way. I shamelessly shat myself at one o’clock in the morning at a silent disco, so you can imagine what that sounded like to all those without there headphones on. I was done, ready for bed (after cleaning up of course)
The next morning I was ready to go home so in traditional festival fashion I left my tent up and headed for the car park. So after a weekend of alcohol, sheep chasing knights of the realm and a major case of IBS my festival experience was over. Sure it was muddy, wet, and extremely cramped but I absolutely loved it and would change it at all.

The Beautiful Game
Once every four years something very special happens to us on this rock we call Home. It manages to unify all the different cultures, gangs and groups we have in this country. Its magical force enraptures us all within its grasp for the full four weeks it takes place from June through July. It’s that time where more heroes are forged than that of a Marvel and DC universe convention. If you haven’t guessed already I’m talking about the football World Cup. Even Oli, who is the guy that doesn’t know the offside rule, yes Oli who thinks that if you get a yellow then red it actually amounts to an orange card, gets world cup fever.
This year was no different; we had the fantastic end to the domestic season which finally saw Arsenal win a trophy and Liverpool…well not win one (which I do enjoy reminding Dave on a very regular basis) Then it was straight into World Cup mode, and this year it was Brazil! The home of the famously flamboyant and extremely skilful team that has lit up the National stage for decades in the famous Yellow, blue and white strip. From Pele to Ronaldinho, they are more decorated than any other national team in history with no less that Five world cups to their name. And England were off to play in their back yard!
This year was different though, this year was the year England would surprise us all when Roy Hodgsen would pick a new vibrant young squad opting to leave the likes of Ashley Cole behind for the still wet behind the ears Luke Shaw. This was met by much excitement among fans who were fed up of the same old ageing England side that has flattered to deceive for far too long now. So that was it. The qualifying complete, the squad was picked, the players were happy, and all was ready…the stage was set for a truly memorable world cup at the home of the famed Estádio Maracanã. Four years of anticipation, four years of excitement, four years of horrible trips to the far reaches of Europe for qualification grudge matches, four years…and it was over in eight days. After two damp displays against Italy and Uruguay, England were out. Queue the vultures, the waves of ‘Well why didn’t he take Ashley Cole’ or the ‘You’ll never win anything with kids’ The get Hodgsen out claims had already began before the team had even played there last group game.
For me though this will never change, we will always have that overly arrogant feeling that we have a god divine right to be better than we actually always end up being just because we ‘invented football’. We will still gather in a drowns around the TV to watch the national team fail at the first hurdle, and more than anything we will always be the first to salivate as well as the first to condemn our sportsmen in this country. Having said all this I can’t quite help but fall into the same trend as the rest of the country and I guess it’s down to this that strangely enough I can say I love it! I love all the build up and believe it or not I love all the heart ache as well because deep down I know that no matter how much heart ache England put me through, at the start of the next tournament it will be like making up with an old girlfriend to go through it all again, and that to me is what football is all about, and that's what makes it 'The Beautiful Game' Don't forget to like us on Facebook , Instagram & Twitter Check out our Brand new EP 'ONE' #WonderLove you guys! - Chris
#WonderWeekender 6th-8th
So it’s the weekend yet again #WonderFans, and like the last week truly did fly. It seems like yesterday that I woke up on a drizzly Monday morning at five am to go to work, but nope…that was five days ago. Instead tomorrow morning I don’t have to wake up until around half past ten when I need to kit up and get out on the golf course! However as an avid lover of golf even I can say tomorrow isn’t exactly going to be your conventional round of eighteen; in fact it isn’t really going to be golf at all. Tomorrow I’m going to embark in a new game called ‘FootGolf’ and yes it is exactly what it says in the tin. A little bit of a compilation (if you will) of my two favourite sports, football and golf. It’s a pretty simple game really you swap a golf ball for a football and a club for your foot (oh and not to mention the whole is a little bit bigger as well). In true compilation style hows about a little #WonderCompilation
In other #WonderNews Dave is away on holiday (yet again) as him and the family are on a relaxation weekend (or as relaxing as a weekend can be with three and eight year old children). Oli is yet again churning out the relentless #WonderWork this weekend as just like last weekend he is working on something very exciting for you guys to see in the next couple of weeks and if I were to tell you it’s on our brand new website can you keep it a secret? Alex’s is all loved up with a new lady friend of his so I imagine he will be off doing something that includes picnics, vineyards and strawberries. (He will probably phone me as soon as he see’s this and moan at me for giving away his secret) So as you can see #WonderFans this weekend is a little bit indifferent for all four of us, from my merged sports to Alex’s romantic champagne dinner. World Cup country song contest... (They all lose).
So I was going to write the 2nd part to my blog from the other week about what we do, why we do it, and why you should do it too (if you're in a band), but that can wait... I'm simply too excited about the World Cup starting in just 9 days!! As many of you know 3/4s of our band LOVE football (me, Alex and Chris) - Oli's more of a 'future fan' (When we all live together in the #WonderMansion he will convert!). So it's only right that we should pay tribute to the greatest competition on earth (just ahead of the MGM battle of the bands, which we won a couple of years ago!!) The World Cup! June / July is going to be a magical time - full of drama, excitement, tension, heartache and celebration! Spare a thought for our #WorldCupWidowWonderWags please...
As we plan to watch EVERY game!! So getting to the point of the blog... I thought it would be fun to play the "WorldCupOfSongsGame"... I've collated the 32 songs representing the 32 competing countries - as a bit of tenuous link between music and football!! When the football isn't on I'm going to be listening to this super awesome playlist (!) just to keep me in the mood... And to give me something else to think about when England get knocked out!! You simply have to choose the BEST and the WORST song (OK so some of them are just fans songs - but that's their country's fault for not having an official song!!)

So what have I learnt form all this?? Well - not every country bothers to release a World Cup song (you may have noticed a few historic songs shoehorned in from previous World Cups!), and the songs and videos don't have to be any good, because really we're only interested in how naked the girls in the thumbnail are... With this in mind, I'm setting myself the challenge of writing, recording and filming my very own England World Cup Anthem... To be unveiled before the start of the World Cup!! Looking forward to sharing it with you all!! Thanks for reading, Peace and love Dave Wondersmith
#WonderWeekender 23rd-26th May
Beautiful, it’s The weekend again. Which means it’s already a week since our EP launch party and five days since the EP #ONE got released itself! Oh how time flies when you’re having fun. This weekend doesn’t seem to let up to much in the way of rest though as we have yet another busy weekend ahead (not to mention the fact it’s the battle of Madrid in the Champions League final on tonight) and the fact it’s actually yet again gloriously ANOTHER bank holiday this Monday.
Perhaps more importantly than all of these factors however it is Oli’s Birthday today, which means in the space of a week Alex and Oli have now officially become seen as old (to the youth) just like Dave and I. That’s right they will have both cemented themselves well and truly into their twenties as it’s the big twenty-one tomorrow. And I can’t think of a more appropriate way for them to both celebrate this weekend than the fact we actually have a gig in Leighton Buzzard. (Now if that isn’t commitment to the cores I don’t know what is)
It’s a little bit of a special gig for us as not only did it get a full article in the news paper but it also means we get to team up yet again with our very good friends and promoters at The Peppermintstore, who I can safely say we have had some of favourite gigs with over the past couple of years. And to make the night even more special it is at The Wheat Sheaf pub which will be broadcasting the champions league final live before we play and the whole night is completely FREE! What more could you want from a Saturday night #WonderFans.
So if you are in the Leighton Buzzard area tonight, feel free to come join us at the Wheat sheaf pub as we watch the football, drink lots, celebrate a double WonderBirthday and more importantly play our recently perfected hour long set to you guys!

The EP launch party #ONE
Tensions were high and things could have fallen apart at any moment. Chris was already barking orders and we’d barely set one foot through the door of the venue.
He was barking orders at his iPhone of course, as live updates of the FA cup final streamed from his phone to our ears. At this point in the day the gig was nestling somewhere at the very back of Chris’ brain as he contemplated the 2-nil deficit after just 10 minutes. Meanwhile the rest of us focussed a bit more on lugging all of our equipment down several flights of stairs. Dave, being the moral compass of the band, while dragging a large trolley full of amps and drums quietly reassured Chris that everything was going to be okay.
Incidentally Arsenal did win and so Chris was able to perform in his Özil shirt unimpeded. While I’m by a long way the least knowledgeable member of the band when it comes to football, I’m more than able to write this account of the incredible evening that was The Wondersmiths launch party for our long awaited EP #ONE.
The sound checks ran smoothly, the tickets were set, there was a special offer on Sol, all in all the night was off to a good start. I realised pretty quickly we’d made a huge mistake. Assigning ourselves as door staff not only mean we couldn’t drink too many of the aforementioned special offer Sol, it also meant putting my inadequate math’s skills to the test. We persevered, and after Aleks had taught me how to minus £8 from £20, we were off to a flying start. The night kicked off to the chilled vibe put out by Acoustic guitarist Simon from the band Lupo. Although he went solo for the night, his performance was still exceptional and really set the bar for the acts that followed.
Next up were Lucid. Lucid are old friends, we’ve been gigging round the block with these guys for a while but since we started playing together their sound has undergone a huge makeover. I was blown away by the sheer size of the sound they were making, the band’s name does serious justice to the kind of immersive experience the guys created. I was completely taken by Lucid’s new brand of music.
By this point the crowd were well and truly warmed up and so onto the stage stepped The Bluebook Project. A fun bit of trivia about these guys is that our beloved bassist Aleks was formerly a member of Bluebook, so it was a pleasure to have them down to support our EP launch. They took the audience by storm with their high energy musical force. There is nothing that pleases me more than to see a band with energy. So many bands are passive in their performance, well not these guys! They bring something really special to their live show, something a lot of bands seem to lack. If you see The Bluebook Project live don’t expect the kind of experience that would stay the same if you had your back turned, every member of this band was born to perform so trust me when I say your eyes will be fixed on the stage. Most importantly they clearly love performing, and the audience loved them to!
The time had finally arrived for ourselves to step on to the stage. I haven’t felt real nerves when playing a gig for a long while, but tonight they all came rushing back to me. We took to the stage and were met by uproarious applause. This is why I love #WonderFans. I’ve performed on stage doing many different things (All of them fully clothed) and never have I experienced the same level of warmth and support as that which we get from you guys! My nerves were quelled almost instantly and we went on to open the set with our latest song ‘Never Stop’.
Before I knew it our slot was over, 50 minutes had never gone by so fast. We were all sweating, my hand was bleeding, but most importantly people were clapping.
We gave every ounce of energy we had into our set but even in our exhaustion we were reluctant to leave the stage. I can say without a single doubt in my head that In the end despite all of our trepidation the night had been a success! So many months of preparation went into the gig, and even longer went into making the EP itself, but ultimately none of this could ever have been made a reality without you, the #WonderFans! I want to say a special thanks to all the bands that supported us and helped to make the night so special, and also a massive thanks to our ever dedicated photographer James aka @EnemyoftheLight who is responsible for the snaps you’re seeing on this blog. To everyone that came and supported us, we love you guys, for those #WonderFans that weren’t able to make it, we still love you, and hopefully we’ll see you at the next one! #SouthAfricaSpecial Part 1
After a tiresome but luxurious flight with Emirates, we stepped off the Airbus A380 to be greeted by the abundant natural beauty that is South Africa. As soon as we'd set foot on South African soil it became piercingly apparent we were a long way from home. Shortly after landing we bundled into our coach. Our driver, Christo, slid a CD into the coaches’ stereo, blasting out a song which would later be recognised as the official Applied Theatre SA anthem. The popularity of DJ Lagg in SA became obvious after the first 15 locals we encountered played the song at levels high enough to burst an eardrum.
The following morning we woke to the blazing sunshine, the glistening sea, and the beautiful rolling hills, little of which we were actually aware existed until that morning as they were cloaked by darkness on the night of our arrival. Christo arrived once more to drop us to the first destination of our trip. We pulled up to the community hall of Magabheni and were met by a sea of smiles. We introduced ourselves to the students and played a few games in the community hall’s car park. As the day pressed on, the numbers of students swelled and the heat rose, so we decided it best to move the games inside to the air conditioned space. Not long after we had retreated inside, we were reintroduced to Gcina Mhlophe one of the aforementioned facilitators present in the meeting held the night before.
Gcina was bursting with enthusiasm telling stories with such intensity we hardly knew where to look. She spoke of the pride we should have for our roots and where we come from. She went on to point out how South African tradition suggested that by speaking aloud the names of your ancestors, you could breathe life into their legacy once more. Ultimately Gcina was not only a story teller, but also a performer, and she made sure as a facilitator, the people she worked with would behave as performers too. If anybody participating in the day was not loud enough in their acting, or in addressing others she would repeat the words “Speak to be heard, speak to be understood” until the person in question would up their efforts. She told us all a story of an old man with a son and daughter. The son was the CEO of a large factory making paper, but heavily polluting the atmosphere (the factory in the story reflected an actual paper making factory situated nearby, the pollution of which caused the community numerous problems). The daughter worked as the curator of a museum. Meanwhile the grandfather was left to look after the grandchildren. Gcina passed the story over to us and allowed us to develop a performance that continued the story in either the future, the past or the present, with the freedom to construct any fantasy around these guidelines that we saw fit. So many great stories were produced, my telling would not do them justice.
To round off the day, we were shown around the township by the school kids, turned friends, from the community centre workshops. The township was modest, with houses and equipment built from whatever resources could be found, often corrugated iron was used to roof houses, instead of the tiling we see typically in England. I remember vividly seeing the chasse of a pick-up truck, re-invented as a plough. The ingenuity of the place astonished me, and highlighted just how wasteful we can be in some instances back home. After numerous interruptions from cow’s abruptly blocking our path, we head back to the coach, to relax in the last of the midday sun and reflect on all that we had seen and experienced that day.
On the second day we were left to decide the course of the entire day. We decided after playing a few games of our own to hand over to the kids and see what games they would usually play. We were introduced to the game ‘Jingles’ something we were told was played extensively with the students who had visited the year before. The game was centred on getting to know the players name’s, this was done through rhythm, song, and dance, and helped us really cement the names of the students we were working with, despite the challenges and difficulties present in a dialect so very different from our own. We spent the rest of the day teaching a couple of Gcina Mhlophe’s stories from her incredible book Our Story Magic. Teaching through workshops we had devised prior to travelling to South Africa, and at the end of the day performed them to one and other. The recurrent theme of the day was dancing, we did a lot of it, teaching dances to one and other, and playing a lot of games through rhythm. One of the boy’s there said something that really shifted my thinking. I commented on how badly I danced, as to which he replied “You dance how you move” a sentiment that in retrospect I couldn't agree more with. If somebody is having fun dancing, there ability is irrelevant, this lack of judgement in the room held true in our performing, and made me appreciate how much sweeter things can be when seemingly trivial worries like this are put to one side. We finished by performing the stories to one and other through various songs and dances, and the day was a big hit all round. The day came to a close, we said our final emotional goodbye’s to our now good friends from Magabheni and prepared for one more trip to Sea Fever Lodge, before we would be embarking on a journey further in-land to Harding. I hope you have enjoyed the read #Wonderfans, part two will be up soon! Oliver Franklin
#WonderWeekender 2nd – 4th May
It’s that time of the week again #WonderFans and I have to say it seems like yesterday that I was writing last weeks #WonderWeekender. Although last week wasn’t quite as special as this weekend, why…? Because this weekend is a Bank Holiday weekend. Yup that beautiful time that only happens a couple of times each year when we get an extra day of work. It’s very important that we have this Monday off work not only for the lie-in but because we have a very busy schedule in the up coming month with at least one gig a week for the next month, so we fully intend to take advantage of the extra day by relentlessly polishing up not only our 45 minuet but also our full hour set for the upcoming shows but before that its shaping up to be a rather messy weekend for me. Saturday see’s me and a couple of mates (who also happen to be honourable #WonderFans) set off in my car to ascend on my brother’s house in Warwickshire for a good old fashion jolly where the plan is to eat and drink far in excess of what is humanly possible.
Whilst I do this, Oli will be getting back in the wondermood after his trip to Africa by writing his blog for Monday which is actually a #AfricaSpecial (keep posted for that blog). Alex has a meeting with the promoters from our gig on a boat is London next Thursday night https://www.facebook.com/events/232320290302233/ Dave will be getting spending the day being a full time #WonderDad as he intends to take the kids swimming and picnicking (dependent on the weather) So as you can see #WonderFans Saturday and Sunday is the calm before the storm on Monday, and I for one personally CANT WAIT to get back into the swing of full time #WonderWork! Keep an eye on all our upcoming gigs at our Facebook Twitter #WonderLove you guys - Chris
Thinking about starting a band? A brief overview of mostly everything I know!
So I’ve tried to capture all of the things being in a band – or at least being in The Wondersmiths involves. If you’re thinking about starting a band – you should probably consider all of these things – or at least, recognise it as something that will only ever be a hobby / a back story for X Factor.
WonderAdmin
Dotting the I’s, crossing the T’s and replying to the daily emails you’ll get from your record label, promoters, gig leads, designers and generally doing all those small jobs you said you’d do!
WonderArtwork
Logo’s, releases, posters, banners, cover images – the chances are you can’t afford to pay for artists or designers – but having bad artwork could be the difference between your music getting heard or not (we’re not supposed to judge books by covers, or music by artwork, but everyone does right?). So you’re going to need a friend offering mates rates (completely free – with the promise that if you do ever get £1m, you will buy them a boat!). We’ve been lucky enough to work with some seriously gifted designers in our time -
Ian White who made our beautiful WonderLogo as well as the artwork for “Free” and the “Live EP” (the artwork for the “Live EP” was the best thing about that release!).
Alex Franklin (Oli's bro who designed "Don't Go" and is currently working on our brand new website - coming soon!).
And more recently David Hunt who created the artwork for our band new EP “ONE” coming out 19th May!
WonderBlog
So you’re reading one! We have many more, some far better than this one (my favourite so far is Alex’s “Rock n Roll on a budget – no need to do it any other way” ) the goal of all this blog writing is to give you, our WonderFans a glimpse into our lives, our struggles, our successes, our thoughts, our experiences (hope this one isn’t too preachy!!), and make a few more friends along the way!
WonderChat / WonderTime
So this is just our word for making sure we’re always talking to each other: an open dialogue where we’re free to bounce creative ideas or influences off each other, talk about strategic innovations (check back in next week’s blog!), delegate our WonderAdmin tasks, and laugh a funny things:
Time spent with your band mates, whether that’s online, on the phone or in the flesh, is just as important as emailing promoters, sending off T Shirt designs or selling a CD – if you’re not mates now, what makes you think spending a month in the back of a sweaty tour bus together will be all that fun!?
WonderGigs / WonderTour
If you’re lucky enough to be the offspring of the owner of Camden Underworld, then well done... If like the rest of us your parents don’t and haven’t ever owned an iconic live music venue, then you may have to choose between playing your first few gigs at open mic nights, youth clubs, Monday night shows, or buying 50 tickets (to sell on to your fans) in advance, just to play on a Friday night in London. There’s no one way to get gigs. You may get given the advice that ‘any gig is a good gig’ and although I appreciate the sentiment of working hard, putting yourself about etc – because ‘you never know who’s going to be watching’... But I seriously doubt A&R guys from Universal Records will ever be drinking on their own in a pub in Dunstable on a wet Saturday afternoon, so there are some gigs you really shouldn’t play! My advice is to play at established live music venues where there is a sound guy (who’s not also pulling pints), play at obscure venues (we played at half time for MK Lightning Basketball team a few years back, and it was SO MUCH FUN!), play at places where there’s a built in crowd i.e. where the promoter isn’t relying on your friends and family making up the numbers (The Student Union circuit is great if you can get on it!), play at places that your fans are excited about going to (somewhere with a bit of nostalgia – for us this was Bedford Esquires!), play as many festivals as you can get your hands on (our favourite was a mini Thai fest in a pub car park – we got fed noodles, given beer and made good dorrar!) play with well matched bands – if you’re indie, play with other indie bands - you might even make a few new fans that way (remember, no one who’s gone to see a Peruvian flute band wants to hear your music) and you’ll have someone to call on when you’re organising your EP Launch Party, don’t play in venues where the bar is in another room, don’t play at venues that have an alternative stage where cover bands are playing for free entry, don’t play for Real Music MK, don’t play gigs where the headline act is a DJ set (we learnt the hard way that no one wants to hear a Tribes DJ set!). Most importantly enjoy gigging, it should never be hard work playing a set, and if it is either you suck, or you’re playing in the wrong place – don’t go back to that place! Here’s a list of some of the good and bad places we’ve played:
Good:
The Purple Turtle (packed and nice tall stage) The 100 Club (iconic), Camden Proud (built in crowd - photo above), O2 Islington (prestigious and trendy), MK Watershed (cool, small but sadly closed now), The Hat Factory (old school – we love it so much we’re hosting our “ONE” The Launch Party there on 17th May!, Camden Underworld (EVERY band has played there and the dressing room has a shower - check out our video we made last time we were there...!), Charlie Browns Luton (nice tall stage with barriers – makes you feel famous!), Beds SU (built in crowd, one hell of a green room / lecture hall), Royal Holloway SU (built in crowd), MK Snobar (when the stage is up it feels great, when it’s not –there’s still a ski slope back drop, which is pretty cool), Camden Barfly (iconic venue with a build in crowd) and Scala (massive stage, massive venue, super premium).
Bad:
Nambucca (bar in another room), Camden Enterprise (tiny venue it upstairs and the bar is in another room), most pubs (they’re just not music venues – they don’t have stages and you’re always going to be 2 steps away from some old drunk), Craufurd Arms (bar in another room), Buszy (was an office with glass and low ceilings – everything you do will sound bad!) The Horn St Albans (thinks it’s better than it is), The Dublin Castle (bar in another room), The Islington (shut a curtain between the stage room and the diners – trying to be too many things at once – I’m sure the diners had a bad experience as did the gig goers), and any Greenfield Village Hall (Chris is banned from ever playing there again... There may be a future blog in there somewhere!
WonderPractice
Probably the first thing you do with your band mates – maybe even before you realise you’re in a band!? But going forward (once you’ve given yourself a name and invited all your friends to like your Facebook Page), you’re going to need time together perfecting your songs, rehearsing your set and having a laugh with your mates (WonderTime). Living a train ride away from each other (Alex and Oli in London and Chris and Dave near Luton), coupled with student sized transport budgets, means we can only get together once a week (Wednesdays at WonderHQ). So when we do get together we have to make sure we’re in the zone, fully focused, committed to the goals (get this song finished, rehearse the 30 minute set, improve this song etc) and sometimes we even have prewritten agendas – premium right? Oooh And sometimes we play the VideoGame at WonderPractice » So that’s it for this week, part two next Monday will include: PhotoGame, VideoGame, WonderPress, WonderSales, WonderSocial, WonderSongs, WonderStrategy, and a few bonus topics! For now, thanks for reading –leave us a comment below or get in touch with us on our Facebook, Twitter or YouTube. Peace, Dave
#WonderWeekender 25th-27th April
So what are we doing this weekend #WonderFans? Well whilst Oli is still off in South Africa (which he had been talking about doing for the last sixty years) he leaves us guys at home busy at work. With four or five gigs coming up in the next few weeks we are busy writing new tracks, looking at a couple of new covers as well as perfecting the set. Now this is very tricky without Oli on drums but we are getting by as well as we can (it helps that Dave's three year old son Reuben LOVES PLAYING DRUMS), granted he isn’t quite to the same ability as Oli…..yet. Not only have we been perfecting the performance side but we have also booked up our show ‘The Wondersmiths Present ‘ONE’ the EP launch Party’ which will be at the #HatFactory in Luton on May 17th (just two days before the ep #ONE comes out on iTunes. So we hope to see as many of you #WonderFans as we can at this super exciting showcase event.

On Sunday I plan to have a little bit of me time. Which I can't help but look forward to as I puff up my pillow, stock up on Mountain Dew and Reese’s buttercups and play all of the football manager (I won’t brag that I have managed to get Wigan into the Europa league in two seasons in charge). Dave will no doubt be watching Liverpool play Chelsea which I imagine will end in us having a heated debate about whether or not they are actually good enough to win the Premier league. Sure I understand the argument that you finish where you deserve to, but my argument is that they haven’t had injuries and they haven’t been in any cup at all really (when you think they got knocked out of the League and FA cup in the early rounds) plus not being in Europe. Anyway I am waffling on about football now, so I shall stop. Don’t forget to look on our Facebook and Twitter for our upcoming shows as well as our Youtube (have you watched our music video for #Insignificant yet??) #WonderLove you guys - Chris
Top 7 #WonderMoments
Ok so I'm sure by now you have all realised we are doing our ‘Top 7’s’and its now down to me to round it all off nicely. So; Dave did - ‘7 intro’s that make you listen’ Alex did - ‘Top 7 super groups’ Oli did - ‘Top 7 Drummers’ This had left me pondering what I should do for the last couple of days and I have to say it was one of the seldom occasions I couldn’t quite think of what to write, and then it hit me. ‘Top 7 #WonderMoments’ so in no particular order (apart from the very last which is my ultimate wonder moment). 1. Supporting Gouplove – This Gig was way back in July 2011 and it took place at The Snobar in Milton Keynes. Back then we were just a three piece as this was before we had actually recruited Alex on Bass! In actual fact as well as the matter of rocking out to a packed out Snobar and sharing the stage with Grouplove (who are BY FAR the best band we have ever supported). This was the Gig Alex came to see which convinced him he wanted to join the band, and three weeks later he was a fully fledged #Wonder.
2. Sharing the stage with Timo Kaltio – For all you #WonderFans that didn’t know this, Alex’s dad is actually a real rock star! For instance in Finland (his home nation) he can’t actually walk down the streets of Helsinki without being stopped by fans! He even co-wrote for and is friends with Guns n Roses! Now does it get much more rock n roll than that? Our experience with Timo came at the #100Club when he graced the stage to perform #RollTheDice and #DontGo. A real life rockstar playing our tracks…cool or what?
3. Making the video for #Insignificant. We shot the footage back in February of this year. It was extremely early, freezing cold and literally right out in the sticks. I ABSOLUTELY loved it (not just because I had a camera lens on me for 8 hours, yes I do love being the centre of attention). Mainly because it was so productive, tiring yet we had aching sides by the end of the day due to laughing so much. You can see the finished video on our YouTube channel - below is the 'behind the scenes'.
4. The ‘Wonder Christmas Party’. Two years ago we decided we would do a Christmas gig at the Watershed in Newport Pagnel. For all you #WonderFans that have never been to the shed, it is probably the smallest but coolest venue in the three counties. It has an official capacity of fifty but as we were quite friendly with the owner, he increased it to seventy for the night, and boy did this make a difference! It was tight, sweaty (I had to take my top off... Dave had to take his trousers off!) and absolutely rocking. It was even one of the extremely rare occasions I actually got my trumpet out (as a little Christmas treat for the #WonderFans attending).
5. #WonderWeek is easily one of my highlights of being in the band. I’m sure most of you can remember #WonderWeek, where last July, Dave and I moved into Alex’s for the week - as we were recording our debut EP with new record label #TheAnimalFarm. There were times during the week where it felt quite laborious (particularly listening to Oli record his Drums for a solid eight hours) but there were also those moments towards the end of the week when it all started to come together where I felt, yes this is brilliant and I felt that we had put all the effort and time in that we possibly could. The EP was complete and I was ecstatic! (The EP ‘#ONE’ is coming out on May 19th where you will be able to find it on iTunes).
6. I have to say that possibly the most ‘Rock n roll’ I have ever felt was at #ThePurpleTurtle in Camden. We headlined the show and it was incredible!! It was a complete sell out with two hundred and fifty #WonderFans there in support. We played one of the tightest forty-five minuet sets I can remember us playing, and it even involved me doing my very first and rather spontaneous crowed surf! (during the anthemic ending to ‘I Know You Better’. With the crowed carrying my weight and the sounds of there chants in my mind still to this day this has to be one of the top moments I have ever had as a #WonderSmith! We're still waiting on the footage of the infamous stage dive... But for now, here's a picture of Oli (who looks about 12) eating our pre-gig noodles from Camden market!
7. Now we have come to my top moment! Battle of the Bands 2012-2013. Round one in late 2012 was in Luton where we had a phenomenal turn out of #WonderFans that I have to say got us through to the next round at a canter. And that shaped the course for the following three rounds all the way to the regional final at Milton Keynes Snobar. We were there, one stage away from the national final at Marshall Amplifications very own headquarters a true ‘showcase event’ the #WonderFans came in their masses to that regional final in Milton Keynes where they did us proud and helped us through to the national final! I still remember now that moment where we found out we had won, I jumped on the nearest table spilling everyone’s drinks in the process, but did I care? Did I heck, we were there the nationals, that showcase event which meant playing in front of five hundred people. IT WAS EPIC!!! And I still get tingly moments now when I think about that gig. Here's some of the footage from the final... We're on at about 1:30...
I hope you have enjoyed the last of the wonder ‘top 7’ blogs #WonderFans? Leave us a comment if you were there at any of the #WonderMoments! Don't forget to like us on Twitter and Facebook #WonderLove you guys - Chris
