Project Winter # 2

Your stomach is empty, it has been empty for a very long time, so much so that you can no longer remember when the hunger began. It hurts, it burns, and everytime you eat the pain just gets worse. The ravaging hunger is all you are now, driven into madness, you eat, and eat, and eat. To never be satisfied. Then a light cuts through the darkness that is your madness, it's warm, it's gentle, your mind is clear for just a few seconds letting you remember your own name at last. But then the hunger returns and you have to eat the light.

Project Winter # 1

So I'm gonna try a new thing, a friend suggested I could do a one-page thing to work on personal projects and try to slowly get back to working on them or at least get somewhere. Not sure if I want to write the actual thing over here, but I can play with stuff like tone, pacing, and character. So, without further ado, let's play a little with what I want Project Winter to feel like. Solitude and loneliness are two sides of the same coin. The only difference is that you enjoy one while you suffer from the other. Or at least that's the conclusion I have reached. Mother would probably say I had been thinking too much and not done enough. But what else can I do in my current situation? I'm slowly being driven into madness by this thing, watching as it slowly takes our food and our neighbors. The village is becoming empty and when it's only me and the monster left. Will I be the hunter or the hunted?

"Hate and betrayal are plentiful in this court, little girl. Knowing that, do you still aspire for the throne?" The old knight asked, firmly grasping onto the latch as if she could simply push him away.

"Sure why not? The last one hundred years had been really boring."

Blood runs down my hands, drip, drop, dripping on my white gown. My hands tremble and I try to look for anything to wipe them in. But there is nothing, for a moment I consider sticking them into the snow but my hands are already showing signs of frostbite. With nothing else I can do about this small problem my frantic mind finally moves to the next and much more real problem. Shelter.

I see a small hut not that far ahead, I could make it there easily, and there even is smoke coming out from a window. As I take one painful step to the next, I wonder, whose blood is this? Who did I kill this time?

The hummingbird is a messenger of god. Who better to swiftly fly among mankind displaying the lord's ability to create life.

Fall was the tailwind, pushing me into a run, making sure to keep me moving.

It was in a faraway land where we met for the first time.

In you came to take away my food and to cover all in grime.

If it weren't for your easy talk and warm smiles.

You would have become my sacrifice that night.

Instead, you became a friend to the children of this land.

A friend to that grouchy old me who hated life.

I haven't seen you for a while now.

You said you would come back, the time has passed and my friend is nowhere to be found.

Perhaps, I just dreamt we had that chat?

She is poetry, the kind you keep reading no matter how much it hurt because it made you feel something, the kind you read under a three while enjoying the breeze, the kind that tears your world apart to rebuild it over and over.

She is poetry, in how she moves, in how she takes and gives on equal parts, in how she speaks her mind.

She is poetry to my heart, in the way she sooths the pain, in the way she is careful with it.

She is poetry and I rough paper, yearning for her touch each night.

Let it out

A growl, deep, guttural, coming from within, was what Vi had been needing. Everything had to be perfect in Piltover, but here in Zaun, she could be as messy and wild as she wanted. Cupcake had been right but Vi wasn't going to tell her. She took a deep breath, letting it out slowly as she clawed her way up the Kiramman tower, tonight was a full moon and she had all the intention to howl her lungs out until Caitlyn herself came to smack her on the head to shut up. Sometimes she wished this assignment would never end.

When time runs out

Tick, tock, tick, tock —

The passage of time is unavoidable, like a freight train it doesn't stop for anyone, some would say not even the driver, and others would say only the driver is exempted from this rule. You know, with the full metaphor of them being death and all that. 

Vi doesn't give a damn, she only knows that the moment Sevika's clock starts running she has five minutes to end the fight. [...]

Flash Fiction 632

"Say yes?" Anne kneeled on the ground in front of her girlfriends, showing them a box with two silver rings with a braided band around it. Blue, orange and red, a color for each of them.She was smiling despite the nervousness that buzzed under her skin, she had chosen this place and time very carefully, the first date she had with Lauren had been here, same with Clara, though that hadn't been on purpose. Just how things ended up that day. As for the time, the smile broadens, the sun — her — coming down on one side, the moon — Clara — on the other, and the sky filling up slowly with stars — Lauren —. A moment when they all three overlapped on the sky, their moment. Lauren laughs then, and Clara has tears pricking form the corner of her eyes about to spill and roll down her face. They both look something in their pockets taking out similar looking boxes with two rings in them. "Together till the end?" Asks Lauren. "A dream come true." Answers Clara.

Flash Fiction 631

Juliette walks down the busy street, bag of bread in her arms and a far away look, her time to move towns again was approaching fast. She sights, squeezing the bag a little too hard and that makes her comeback to the present. *Shit the bread!* She startles, making the people around her look at her with frowns and even some of them step away. She shrugs it off mentally, four thousand years is enough time to learn not to care about what other people may think. Though there was one person she did care about, Kassandra, charming and dashing. "Careful there, Princess, Rose wouldn't like it if she knew you were ruining the bread before getting a bit."  Speaking of the devil, the young woman was sitting outside her meat stall, sharpening a hunting knife with a smirk on her face. She winks at Juliette, prompting her to come over. "How you doing Juls? Didn't see this morning, too cold for your run? The mountain trail was really humid today, bad for some folks knees but awesome for hunting boar." Juliette looks back to make sure she doesn't collide with anyone before walking to the stall. "Was just going to ask how the hunting went — " She gives the hanging fresh meat a glance "— but I can see it went well." Juls moves her hair behind her ear, a bit of a goofy smile in her face as she gets close to Kassandra. "Did you miss me?" "Maybe, didn't have my conversation buddy and the path into the mountain was lonely." She answers, coy smile at first and then a pout. "Oh, poor you." Juls leans against a columns that is beside the stall and offers Kass some bread before taking one for herself and biting into it. "You could have knocked at my door, you know. Wouldn't have said no."  She winks at Kass. *Could never say no to you.* "Really? But what if —" She give a bite to her bread " — I ask you to leave this town with me?" Kass asks, with a timid smile. "Would you say yes?" "Just tell me when and I'll be ready." She was the only one keeping here anyways.

Flash Fiction 630

Waking nightmares are something Santiago is used too, ever since that night — the irony. He was the most practical and logical thinker of the class, he had gone with the group only to show them they were getting curious over nothing. In the end, only he had seen the dark figure walk the corridors of the abandoned building. The apparition was clear as day, same as then orange light of the oil lamp she or it help as it passed the corridors. There's nothing, how boring. One of his classmates said and Santiago’s jaw hanged open then. The ghost was right there! He almost cried, but the insecurity won over, he slowly closed it and turned around, subtly looking at everyone in the group to find general disappointment. No one went in, and he was grateful for that, letting out a deep breath once he was walking home. Was he hallucinating? No one else saw her, only him and what's even worse, the girl, the ghost, walked out of the building while they were complaining about how boring everything looked. She walked to the group, her face white with black holes for eyes. Santiago almost cried out right then and there but both are biting his lip he looked away and started walking back home. “Let’s go, I told you there was nothing to see here.” It followed him back home and has been with him ever since, wherever he goes.

This is letter is to us, a journey all the way back from the moment we met till the present, and it's been a long one. Even more because I'm going to cheat, I met you a few months before you met me, you probably didn't notice me, I would pass right beside Miss Rosaline window everyday while coming back from baseball practice. You were at the piano and I couldn't help stopping and sitting on the stairs while you practiced. Would you think Im too cheesy if I tell you I think that's the moment I fell for you? We were no older than twelve back then, and your piano had still a long way to go, later on I discovered you have been a it for no more than five months. [...]

What do we do when the world turns it's back on us? We become vigilantes, we take to the shadows and watch over it from there.  They don't need to know about us, we don't do this job for the fame. Leave that to the legacies happy to be on the spotlight handling the masses.

Johnatan brushes away the hay off, "I have a heroic task for you kid, one that will put you on the map for sure! — And I go ahead and believe the old man, damn it." The horse neighs turning it's head and nipping the boy's hair. "Sorry, Lancelot, I'm on it. See — " He resumes the brushing, slowly and carefully, making sure to kneed whale the muscle as much as cleaning the beautiful black coat."Man, I want to go on an adventure, kill dragons, save the day, protect the people. — Would you like to be my loyal steed, Lancelot?"

"In your dreams, boy! Bahaha ha ha ha, my loyal steed, this squirt."

John turns with one jump, brush at the ready to throw it if needed only to realize it was Mr Penndragon. *This guy, almost gives me a heart attack. But I'm not giving up, and hero has to be patient and charming with the people.* He lowers the brush, trying to strike a heroic pose. "I have all it takes —"

"Yeah, except for a sword, a horse, any money, or trining." The old man interrupts with another fit of laughter. "The hero era is long gone, boy, don't dream the impossible." He says with a tender pat on the back despite the harsh words. Then he turns walking away and leaving John to his dreams, a smirk on his face despite the sadness in his eyes. Mr Penndragon enters an old shed, where he proceeds to uncover a celar's door and take a look around before disappearing inside. The stairs are dark but he quickly dispels the shadows with a wave of the hand making three light orbs appear in front of him. "We won boy, so you wouldn't need to fight." Walking to the table where his old sword excalibur rest, he places his hand on top of the scabbard. "It was all thanks to you old friend."

Flash Fiction 626

The tunnel's construction began on time, we had the tools and the people, everything looked good. "We will be done by the end of the month, chief." I wish I hadn't said anything then — the tremors began exactly one week after, small at first and little by little growing on intensity. There was no precedence, no previous seismic activity at all .

"How? Why?" We all asked this questions but for some reason only I was voicing them.

"It will take as long as it has too, if the tremors begin you get them out and once they stop you get them inside. It's simple."

Sure,  simple, if you didn't care for lawsuits about negligence and contract breach. I was so nervous, so of course, one night unable to sleep somehow the stupid idea that if I went down into the tunnel I would find an answer to the tremor got into my head. And it didn't matter how hard I tried to ignore it, the anxiety rose, and rose, and rose until I jumped out of bed barely dressing appropriate clothes for an underground expedition. I took the keys of my car, a radio, though there wasn't going to be anyone listening at it but I guess in my neurotic state my head thought it a good idea. And a small backpack with water and granola bars.

The construction site was empty and silent, of course it was — what was I expecting? Someone to stop me, maybe, but no one was there. I walked to the elevator, putting on a hard hat one of the workers had forgotten or simply left there out of laziness.  My hand hovered over the button to get it moving down just for a second or two, before pressing it and making it come to life with a wine that might have woken up the neighbors, if luck was on my side. I never got to know —

"Do you know what happened?"

"No one knows, they said the man just came inside dressed in a bathrobe and sleepers, security cameras showed him walking straight into the elevator and never coming up again. At least the tremors ended, we can finish on time now."
