Prompt fill for @promptsforthestrugglingauthor 's Friday Night Fights

"I don't want you to die, Glenna...and if you face those bastards alone that's exactly what's going to happen. You know it. I know it. So let me help you." 

“I thought you hated me?” she teased, tilting my chin up with a glove covered finger.

“Things change…” I muttered.

“You’re cute when you don’t want to admit things aloud, you know. Go on, just say you love me.”  What would be a playful smile on almost anyone else was firmly in place upon her face, but on her it was a bit too sharp...too dangerous despite it being her clear attempt at being gentle. 

"I love you," it was meant as a statement but the words rolled off my tongue more of a question than anything else. We were dangerous, not just as people but when together it could be volatile to the highest degree...even still I hated the pinched look on her face when she realised I wasn't able to admit my love for her with certainty. 

I hated the fact I couldn't tell her what she wanted to hear. I hated it because she wasn't wrong in saying that I loved her...however admitting it wasn't a matter of can or can't, it was a matter of should or shouldn't.  I loved her, but Glenna was not the type of person I should love. She was a killer. She was a killer and I was the monster who loved her despite that…despite it or maybe because of it...I never really figured out which it was. 

"I'm sorry." 

"I know," she replied. The sharp yet loving smile back on her face, as if I hadn't just broken her heart. "So what's the plan?"

I paused. 

Perhaps a bit too prolonged based on the way she continued on, "You said you don't want me to die facing those bastards by myself. So what's the plan?"

So, my incredibly silly new Writing Life Hack is, like, maybe directly tied to my dice obsession.

But.

I, for one, am awful at making myself actually commit to long writing sprints ‘cuz I’m both easily distracted and often interrupted.

So, like, I’m straight up just rolling a d20 every now and then and making that be my given writing sprint time. You could totally do this with, like, percentile dice too, if you wanted a longer time than 20 minutes, but it’s genuinely a decently helpful tool to just write a bit!!

This is incomplete but I’m actually fond of what I managed to write so I’m posting it anyway.  

Whispers of Fire

He shuffled into the room, failing to hide the bruises surrounding his eye underneath floppy bangs. I frowned, waving him closer. There were things I had been prepared for when Baemais, Henley and I got an apartment together. Helping to hide the fact that Baemais was still at least part-demon and was formerly demon royalty? Sure. Becoming unreasonably good at applying first aid to said part-demon? Not really, if I’m being completely honest. 

“How many times a month does this happen?” I asked. 

He merely offered me a thin smile. “I suppose I just have a very punchable face.”

I tried my best to disguise my grimace as a grin, though I can only imagine how spectacularly I must have been failing for Baemais to continue trying to downplay things for my benefit. 

“Really,” he said, “It’s nothing, Jax.”  

“Okay.” I lied far too easily, pressing a bag of frozen peas to his bruised face, “if you say it’s fine then it's fine.” 

I would just call Azlenne later and find out what was really going on if Henley and I couldn’t get him to give in and tell us what was really going on. While I hated going behind his back for information on the less pleasant aspects of his existence there isn’t much else I can do if he won’t tell us himself and I had a gut instinct that was telling me this was more than the usual instinctive antagonism some people tended to feel when Henley was around. 

“If it was bad I’d tell you.” 

Well that was...unexpected. Had Baemais, Henley, and I been through a lot together? Yes. Were we in a polyamorous relationship with one another that hinged on open communication between us? Also yes. Still, there were some aspects of Baemais that we knew better than to expect full disclosure about. So him promising to open up was more than a little surprising. 

“Promise?” I asked, less out of genuine doubt and more so for confirmation of what I already believed was the truth.

“On my life,” he paused, and for a moment I wondered if I would’ve been right to doubt him, “On my life and on Azlenne’s, I promise I’ll tell you...well, you or Henley, whichever is more readily available at the time...either way you’ll know.”

Baemais just kept surprising me. Azlenne is a person who Baemais considered to be his sister. She was another former demon who’d been turned into something a bit less. One of the few people who had been even more trapped by his tyrant of a father than Baemais himself. They had no blood relation since demons don’t get born in the way we humans tend to think of birth being, but they were shaped from the shadows by the same demon, but they were at each other's side from the beginning of their existences, they had nearly died for one another when they were fully demons. Baemais had given up immortality to keep her alive. So the idea was jarring, shifting the perspective of ‘my Baemais is in danger’ instinct always being right and the absolute gravity that comes with Baemais swearing on Azlenne’s life in addition to his own. 

“Okay,” this time I am not lying when I say that. Maybe I was seeing demonic interference where there was none. Baemais does have a rather polarizing effect on people. Most humans hate him on instinct, something to do with demonic auras, even now that they’re not technically full demons anymore. Maybe this really was just more of that taking effect and nothing else. Baemais isn’t one to swear on someone’s life casually even after the last handful of years as a mortal person.

Family Reunions

He glanced up over his coffee cup and the sky shifting from dark to dawn. An oblong thing bobbed in the sky, painted with some yellow symbol he couldn’t make it. He closed his eyes, but it still sat there, as if waiting.

The man turned back inside. It was too early to have to deal with this. He sighs and pours coffee over a large thermos full of ice.

"E.T. has phoned home." He says tiredly as his wife glances out the window.

"Be nice. He's my brother." She admonishes whilst giggling.

"He's a dimension-hopping psychic alien teenager with a hero-complex that your parents took in when he was a baby." Cody says with a roll of his eyes, "He doesn't even exist on paper."

"He's still my little brother and at one point, he was your friend, too." she says decisively. "He was before we knew he was from another solar system and he will be until the end of time."

"Well maybe you could convince him to drive a car when he comes to visit… instead of… you know... whatever the fuck that thing is?"

Liv cringes, "I'm pretty sure that's a warship from his home planet."

"Look," Cody says with a sigh, "all I know is that I'm not nearly caffeinated enough for whatever intergalactic chaos that's going to follow once he decides to stop being a coward and knock on the front door."

As if waiting for him to say that, there's a knock on the front door.

"Speak of the devil," says Liv as she heads to the front door.  

"Think he was viewing our present," Cody asks, "waiting for a good moment to drop in?"

"Decidedly so." Liv replies, guiding the psychic space teen into their kitchen. His large amber eyes once unnaturally vibrant, now glazed over with a milky-whiteness, completely blind to the world around him. “I’m going to head upstairs and make the spare room up. Watch him, please.”

"Well fuck." Now Cody felt awful for poking fun at the kid earlier since he was seemingly trapped in his othersight. He wonders how his brother-in-law had even managed to pilot a warship back to earth in this state. Was this new? Had this been going on for a while? "Matt? Matthew...Matt, buddy, you in there?"

A pause.

"I...it's like a livestream, yanno," Matt explains, sounding a bit disoriented,as he leans on the countertop, "there's a bit of a delay between the streamer doing something and the viewer seeing it happen. I am here though...kinda here and...a couple other places, I keep getting...relocated briefly, there’s too much going on...it’s started getting hard to keep track of which place is me and which place is just...just othersight.”

“That’s...that sounds rough.”

“I’m getting used to it.” Matt says quietly. His tone reminding Cody that Matt  was just a 17 year old, extraterrestrial or not, he shouldn’t have to deal with this crap, “I’ll be fine. I’ve survived this long.”

“It’s okay if you’re not fine.” Cody says, surprising himself as much as he does Matt.

“Sounds fake but okay.”

“I’m serious, Mattie, if its too much just let us know, we’ll help however we can.”

Rejecting the End

″Have you heard?” The merchants and peasants asked one another in the market streets. “They say he may have been kidnapped! But who could’ve kidnapped a prince unseen? Perhaps it was an inside job,” They prattled on, noting how thankful they were that nothing so extravagant happened in their kingdom.

The missing prince listened to it all with a face of stone as he stood among them. Let their rumors spread. So long as he never had to go back.

'Freedom has a very steep price, Your Highness, are you willing to risk it?' The sorcerer's words...Lucien's words echo in his head as he makes his way through the town. 

His answer had been yes back then. Yes he would gladly take any risks to be free of that life. Yes to leaving and never looking back. Damn that place all to Hell and everyone there along with it, no legacy is worth giving up your sanity to maintain. 

His answer would still be yes, if he were being honest with himself...the list of reasons why would simply be longer now....Longer and more specific.

(A part of him wonders how he had lived so long without people that actually mattered to him.) 

The route he takes through town is a long one, necessarily so. On the off chance someone is following him, a direct route to Lucien is less than ideal. 

A smile creeps its way onto his face. 

Lucien… 

Who would've thought he would fall for the sorcerer he had spent close to half of his life preparing to battle to the death? Certainly not him...the idea of love in general had always seemed so absurd to him, it was a surprise he had fallen for someone at all…

Besides, it's not like Lucien is cursing people without their consent so there really isn’t anything morally or legally wrong with what the so-called “villainous dark sorcerer” has done to be labelled an enemy of the kingdom...it's hardly Lucien's fault that most princesses and maidens would rather pay him to make them sleep for one-hundred years in an abandoned tower than be pawned off in an arranged marriage. 

The former prince shakes his head, trying to pull himself out of his thoughts before walking inside the residence where he and Lucien were both currently taking refuge. 

"Hello, Alexis. No problems in town, I would hope.” Lucien greets, not bothering to look up from where he was pouring over a rather thick leather bound book. 

“None.” He wonders if he should tell Lucien about the rumors in town or if it was something Lucien would just innately know in that way he always seems to know important things. He decides to err on the side of caution. “People were talking about Prince Alexander of Westhaven today.” 

Lucien’s hand stills, the page of his spellbook remains half turned between his fingers, forgotten in a moment of rare uncertainty. “Is that so?”

“Mhhm.” Alexis gives a vaguely affirmative response, a smile playing on his lips, “Apparently he’s gone missing, a suspected kidnapping...possibly and inside job.” 

“An inside job you say?” Lucien chuckles at the absurdity of how accurate and wrong the rumors managed to be all at once, “What a fascinating theory.” 

“Isn’t it though?” 

Lucien closes his book and stands, walking towards Alexis and taking his hands into his own, “I do hope the prince is well, wherever he may be.” 

“Oh, I’m sure he will be, given enough time.”

hey, i didn’t want to derail someone else’s post but its making me deeply anxious not to say anything so I’m gonna make my own

if you are in a privileged group but also a minor? especially a mentally ill minor, and TRIPLE if there is even the most remote chance saying something could result in danger for you?

those ‘use your privilege’ post telling you to stand up to your family members (which i notice becoming increasingly frequent at this time of year) are not directed at you.

(also, significantly more hostile aside - anybody who comes on this post to clown and say that they are feel free to fuck off in literally every goddamn direction)

I know with kids like Greta Thunberg making the news, and post listing other Gen Z kids making changes, it can be easy to feel like those posts are calling you, kids, out specifically.

and don’t get me wrong, I am so, so proud of those kids. and if you can stand up to your family members, I’m proud of you, too.

But, and i mean this in gentlest way possible - this is not your job.

It isn’t. Some of you are taking it on, and thats very noble of you, but it isn’t and should not be your job. anybody who says things like “these kids are gonna save the world” makes me want to tear my hair out because kids should not be saving the world, kids should be being kids. You should be worried about taking the ACT and figuring out what kind of people/if you want to kiss, not fucking fascism.

the most stressful decision you should have to make at a family gathering is what sweater to wear, not putting your literal child self in the middle of a bigoted, hostile confrontation, and anybody - especially any adult - who tells you otherwise is not only an asshole but it is fucking irresponsible, and does not have your best interest at heart.

Hello. This is completely out of character for this blog, but I’m full of rage and things need to be said. I’ve been at work practically all day since Tuesday, so I haven’t been online much, and I’ve been trying to stay away because each update I see makes me furious.

I would like to say, unequivocally, that black lives matter and I support these protests wholly. I am not available to protest, despite there being one in my town earlier today, and others occurring in larger cities nearby, and have instead taking to donating.

If you can, please donate to North Star Health Collective and Black Visions Donations, per request of the Minnesota Freedom fund.

If you disagree and are heartily bothered by my stance, please feel free to unfollow me. In the past, I have kept a majority of my political opinions to my personal blog, but silence is only part of the problem and I will not be complicit nor complacent.
