“Hello,” Adrianna said approaching the Prince Consort of Corona, he looked so much like William, it took her breath away.

“I’m Queen Adrianna, it’s nice to meet you, Your Highness.”

“Your highness.” He bowed as he assumed was expected of him. Though he couldn’t stop the grin at the use of your highness for HIM. Technically, he did get the title even though he didn’t have any power in terms of ruling.

“Nice to meet you too. Blondie said you were nice.”

“And she is lovely,” the former queen said kindly, she couldn’t stop staring at him, if she didn’t know any better he was William come again. Except for the eyes, those mirrored her own almost perfectly.

“I’m sorry, you look very familiar.”

“You must be Ariel.” The Dowager Queen curtsied to her daughter-in-law, the new queen of her beloved kingdom.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Dear.”

The hug surprised the former queen, she hadn’t expected that of all reactions.

“Yes, well, I’m happy to be here too. It is good to be back in my old home. Even if it’s just to visit.” The palace hadn’t changed much since she’d been banished.

“I do apologize for not attending the wedding, my dear.”

“Eugene, come here my boy,” Adrianna said motioning for her son to come sit beside her.

“I want to tell you about your father.”

He was certain that this—the subject of his marriage—would be their middle ground, because Eric still couldn’t quite decide what to make of his mother. He was hurt, and found himself wondering why was it that she essentially didn’t want him; why it was she had left him alone to bear the burden of preparing to inherit his father’s crown. He wanted her to know that he was fine, that he had done well for himself without her, thanks to Grim and Carlotta.

And there were so many questions.

“Yes, yes of course. She’s resting now because well—we’re going to be parents.” he explained as he gestured for her to go inside. “But she very much wants to meet you too.”

“So soon? Well, I believe I should congratulate you.” Adrianna said as they headed inside, as soon as the palace doors closed, Adrianna turned to her son.

“I am so proud of you Eric, you have become the young man I wanted you to be. I just wish I could have been here for you. I am sorry that I was kept away from you for so long.”

Hate and resentment were powerful, all-consuming emotions, that Adrianna knew too well.

She feared that her son felt that way towards her, after all, he had been such a little boy when his father had died and Adrianna had been banished from his life, did he understand what had happened?

She supposed she would find out soon enough, as her carriage pulled up in front of the palace that she had once called home.

Stepping out of the carriage into the sunshine, she looked around at all the courtiers watching her. Before she saw Eric coming outside to greet her.

“Eric, I’ve missed you.”

His father had told him that his mother was dead. Eric hadn’t asked too many questions, being only a child, but his father had assured him that she was in heaven and no longer suffering. So the surprise of learning that she was alive over a decade later could not be understated. All those years of thinking he was alone—particularly after his father had been shipwrecked—when his mother still had a beating heart. When he had heard, he didn’t know what to think. He was angry, he admitted it—angry at his father for lying to him, and at her for leaving in the first place, and then never coming to see him afterwards. And at first, he didn’t even want to see her. It had been Ariel who had convinced him, telling him that she would give anything to see her own late mother again.

He emerged from the palace silently, waiting at the top of the stairs as his mother exited her carriage. The knot in his throat burned, coming close to betraying him as she spoke. “Hello, Mother.” he answered softly, willing his voice not to shake as he stepped forward to kiss her cheek. “I think it goes without saying that I missed you.”

She wanted to hug him, but there were too many eyes watching. And Adrianna knew, if she held her son in her arms again she would weep. She could still remember how his nurse ripped Eric from her arms.

“I hear that you’re married, may I meet her?” Adrianna asked seeing that his new wife had not come with him. She wanted to go inside and get away from all these prying eyes.

The question threw Lavina off, she’d lost everything, her home, her throne, her parents. And yet he was asking how her journey had been.

For a moment she didn’t know what to say but decided against the truth.

“It’s been tiring, Captain, I am so glad to be on land again.”

“We’ve had some rough weather recently, Princess. At least you made it here.” 

He cringed at that last sentence. Talking to foreign nobles wasn’t easy for him at the best of times, but he was particularly unsure of how to talk to this one. Queen Arianna had informed him of the Princess’s circumstances - what she knew of them, anyway - and the Captain couldn’t even begin to imagine what it was like for her. So he did the only thing he could think of; he tried to act like everything was okay. Like she was safe now; because, hopefully, she was. 

“Your rooms are all prepared,” he went on. “As for your ladies, we have plenty of space in the servants’ quarters.”

“Thank you,” Lavina managed as she motioned for her ladies to follow. She was tired, she was upset and she desperately wanted to sleep and never wake.

“How far is it to the palace?” Lavina asked, her exhaustion starting to show.
