About that religious fish
Ever heard about the Sea Monk and the Sea Bishop ? In most cases, they are refered to as cryptids, which is not entirely untrue, I guess, but their origins are far more entertaining.
The first report of a sea monk was in Norway, where around 1545, some guy mentionned a fish vaguely ressembling, as you might have guessed, a monk. Then, the sightings multiplied and diversified.
It then differs from most folktales, because scientists took this Very seriously. It was mentionned in multiple publications classifying marine fauna, made by naturalists that are still esteemed for their work to this day (such as Rondelet).
Then, they all started copying each other's engravings, which produced, well, this
As the note says in the study this post is based on (Was Steenstrup Right? A New Interpretation of the 16th Century Sea Monk of the Øresund, Charles Paxton) (very interesting!!! Go read the whole thing!),
"Note that Steenstrup's reconstructions of Belon's and Rondelet's pictures are not wholly the same as the originals we have seen."
Indeed.
Just imagine it : The Renaissance ! Questions on our relation to ourselves and how to try understanding god through the knowledge of human nature ! Perspective ! Revisiting of ancient texts ! But also, fish religion. Very very important topic we have got to focus on.
There has been a few suggestions for the actual creatures that were seen :
So, a bit off the mark, maybe.
But thats okay! Its an awesome concept, so i get the fascination, the ocean is still to this day mostly unexplored, so back then, any knowledge was good to take!
Now here is some doodles, because the imagery is just so very fun to me !
Hi! I love your blog!! Here is little study I made to try some watercolour, based on your post on the Peinaleopolynoe Elvisi, it was the perfect subject for a colour test (so shimmery). Thank you for all the worm information and passionate work!
Woahh that looks awesome! I love love love watercolour, but it's been a while since i painted - maybe i shall take some inspiration and paint some worms one day. Thank you for sharing and the kind words :D
Hell yeah, worm painting, lets gooo
trip at the aquarium :)
I had forgotten that fishes do move. Rather inconvenient.
little lino work from uhhh 3 years i believe.
It was during a workshop where the theme was a haiku by Basho :
"An old pond
A frog leaps
sound of water"
(probably not the exact translation) but yeah done more lino since then, since not my forte but its fun
Nothing to say here. I will never do anything better unfortunately
Not a gastropod (sorry) but an ancient crustacean !
very nice propelling system very fun (putting a pin in that i think i drew something about that its probably somewhere)
I actually screenshotted this a while back whoever wrote this hope youre living your best life
This is very serious.
Big corvid moment ! (a few of the main ones)
Drawing them with references really helps understanding the little differences.
Crow face ! so expressive, drawing bird eyes is the best.
(ft. my rabbit, loafed up, seen from behind)
Lil anatomy study! I made it green because I can
(Still based on The Gift of the Crow by John Marzluff illustrated by Tony Angell)
Fish page ! rather old edition, drew this to understand the anatomy better. (pen and watercolor)
It's a Stoplight Loosejaw (or malacosteus) They have an open jaw that can unfold/unhinge so thats sick.
The red bioluminescence is not made to attract preys à la Anglerfish, but rather a guide in their hunt, as other species do not perceive this type of light.
Clark's nutcracker. (pencil) this is a practise thing, as the original image was drawn by Tony Angell. (It is one of his illustrations for the book Gifts of the Crow by John Marzluff. Very interesting! )
Apparently, The Clark's nutcracker has an extremely exhaustive memory of all the places where he hides his food (seeds). Up to tens of thousands of placements over months!
pretty awesome.
